From the Knoxville News Sentinel 1 Oct 2004 ELLIS, PAUL LEANDER - of Knoxville, SWICEGOOD, SHARON PHILLIPS - age 52 of Harriman ELLIS, PAUL LEANDER - of Knoxville, entered into God's heavenly kingdom on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at NHC Fort Sanders. He was an active member of Haven Chapel Church in Claxton until his health began to fail. Paul attended the first African American Elementary School in Clinton and was one of the members of the first class at the historical Green McAdool School in Clinton. Paul served in the United States Army for 12 years. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in the Korean War and WWII. He retired for the postal service in New York City after 36 years of service. Paul was preceded in death by: parents, Esquire and Betty Ellis; wife, Elsworth Ellis; brothers, William Zachariah, Esquire Cleon, James Alford; sister, Avelena; special mention, Evangelist Libby Sales who went to be with the Lord in August 2004; nephew, James Allen Ellis, Paul Leander (PL), Massie Ellis; great niece, Janet Washington; and great nephew, Grady LaWhane Ellis. Paul leaves many family and friends: Evangelist Sarah (Gator) Evans, Charles (Claudia) Ellis, Berline Ellis (sister-in- law) who has supported Paul during his illness; special mention, niece, Barbara (Benson) Ogbomo who traveled from Boston, MA to give their support; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 2, 2004 from 1:30-2:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at Unity Mortuary Chapel. Reverend Porterfield Bradby, officiating. Interment will be held on Monday, October 4, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with full military honors by the Tennessee Volunteer Honor Guards. The family will be at 2829 Linden Avenue in Knoxville. Arrangements by Unity Mortuary. SWICEGOOD, SHARON PHILLIPS - age 52 of Harriman passed away Wednesday September 29, 2004 at her home. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, longtime employee of Roane Medical Center. Graduate of Harriman High School class of 1970. Obtained Associates Degree in Radiology Sciences in 1993 from Roane State Community College. Preceded in death by parents Clifford & Pernia Phillips, son Lewie Swicegood. Survivors: husband, Alan F. Swicegood of Harriman; daughter, Heather Swicegood of Harriman; brother & sister in law, Ron & Margaret Phillips of Chattanooga; nephew, J. J. Phillips of Chattanooga; Godson, Tyler Alan Clark; many young adults who called her "mom" & were always made welcome in her home & her heart. Funeral 1:00 PM Saturday October 2, 2004 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Michael Sweeney officiating. Interment in Roane Memorials Gardens. Pallbearers are T. J. Clark, John Clark, Shane Melton, Robbie Lee, Brian Magill, David Branam, Scott Henderickson, and Brian Hendrickson.
