From the Knoxville News Sentinel 11 Oct 2004 \HARKNESS, DAVID J. - MARQUIS, CHRISTINE BLANK age 72 of Caryville, WOODS, PAUL - age 72, of Clinton TN, HARKNESS, DAVID J. - died Saturday, October 09, 2004. He was born in Jellico, Tennessee, April 19, 1913, the son of David Alexander and Jessie Jones Harkness. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Tennessee and graduate work at the University of California (Berkley) and Columbia University in New York City. He taught English in High School in Park Dale, Oregon and in Jellico High School, where he was later Principal for five years. He taught English at Lincoln Memorial University for two years and for one year was Director of the Demonstration School at East Tennessee State. David returned to U.T. as Director of Library Services in the Division of Continuing Education, a position he held for 34 years. During that time he published 55 booklets on Historical and Literary Subjects, among them "Tennessee Heritage" and "Tennessee in Literature". He was a frequent speaker at men's and women's clubs, high school and college assembly programs, high school and college class reunions, and at meetings of teachers and librarians all over the state. He retired in 1981 and continued writing and speaking. In 1982 he was inducted into the first Literary Hall of Fame at L.M.U. and in 1992 was taken into the Educators Hall of Fame there. In 1987 he received the History In The Media Award from the East Tennessee Historical Society, where he served on the Board. He was Program Chairman for several years and retains the title of Honorary Director. In 1989 he was given the first Jellico High School Alumni Award. In 1993 he received the Lincoln Diploma of Honor from Lincoln Memorial University. With R. Gerald McMurtry, he was author of "Lincoln's Favorite Poets" published by the University of Tennessee Press, and for five years he wrote a weekly column for the Knoxville News- Sentinel. He served on the Board of the Blount Mansion Association for many years, and he also served on the planning committees for Homecoming 86', Knoxville Bicentennial, Knox County 200 Years, and Tennessee Bicentennial. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and taught Bible Study to the high school seniors. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpa Fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa. He was a charter member of the West Knoxville Kiwanis Club. He was preceded in death by: his sister, Jane H. Hutchins. He is survived by: his brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Mary Belle Harkness; his niece, Anne H. Herndon; nephews, Alex J. Harkness, Jr., David Ronald Hutchins, Thomas R. Hutchins, and Carl T. Hutchins, Jr.; and great nieces and great nephews. Family and friends will meet at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a graveside service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13 with Dr. G. Carswell Hughes officiating. WOODS, PAUL - age 72, of Clinton TN, passed away on Saturday October 9, 2004 at the St. Mary's Hospice in Halls TN. Paul was born on May 30, 1932 in Clinton TN, to the late William S Woods and Nanny Collins Woods. Sister Ruth Goddard and brother Fred Woods also precede him in death. Paul was of the Baptist Faith and an Army Veteran. Paul was also very sociable with a number of friends and was know for his sense of humor as well as being very kind, sensitive, generous, charitable and faithful. Survivors: sons, Paul Woods of Washington State, Patrick Woods of Ohio; daughters, Renee Woods of Ohio, Tina Woods of Ohio; nieces, Nancy Goddard O, Neal of Georgia, Carolyn Goddard of Georgia; special friends, Loni Daniels of Oak Ridge TN, Sue Conner of Clinton TN; 6 grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives. The family will have a graveside service on Monday October 11, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton TN.
