From The Knoxville News Sentinel 22 Jul 2004 BLACK, MARYBELLE - of Caney Creek Road, Harriman, GOUGE, PATSY COLEAN - age 67 of Oliver Springs, VANDERGRIFF, RUBY KATE NINE- BLACK, MARYBELLE - of Caney Creek Road, Harriman, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004. She went peacefully in her sleep after a yearlong battle with kidney and cancer illnesses. She was born April 27, 1928 in Oliver Springs. Marybelle graduated from Clinton High School, worked in the coal industry in Oliver Springs, then lived and worked in Dallas, Texas in the early 70's. She was office manager at Orthopedics Surgeons of Oak Ridge for several years and then moved on to Harriman Housing Authority as office manager and retired around 1993. A strong willed, independent woman who lived her life on her own terms and was most happy tending to the birds and deer that inhabited the land around her home, as well as enjoying her life long friends and neighbors that lived both near and far. Preceded in death by her father, James M. Black; and mother, Mabelle Mahoney Black. Survivors: brother & sister-in-law, Charles & Gail Black of Lilburn, GA; nephew, Jeffery Black of Fort Lauderdale, FLA; niece, Ashleigh Jenkins & husband, Scott of Lilburn, GA; great- nephew, Charlie Treadwell Jenkins of Lilburn, GA; aunt, Lois Mahoney & children, Carolyn Stein, Howard Mahoney, Judith Ann Eaton of Mahoney Road of Oliver Springs, Tennessee; cousins, Doug & Janice Black of Harriman, Marilyn Black of Kingston, Patricia Black LeGrand of Burlington, NC, Paul & Clara Jones of Oak Ridge, Robert & Madge Jones of Oliver Springs. Marybelle donated her body to scientific research at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. Memorial services will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. She was a faithful Christian for God, and a member of Big Mountain Church. She touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Neal Moore of Petros; brothers, Manuel Creekmore, Jimmy Ray Moore, William (W.L.) Moore and wife Wanda, Louiey David Creekmoore; sister, Betty Rose Bunch. She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Gouge; daughter and husband, Gail and Kenny May; son, James (Bud) Gouge, all of Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Brandon and Brittany Kennedy, Natalie and Joshua May, all of Oliver Springs; sisters, Faye and husband Lester Elmore, Emma Swilley, and Eulene Lee; brothers, Sammy Joe Moore and Alonza and wife Violet Moore. Patsy sang in many churches in the area for most of her life, until the time of her illness. She will be dearly missed by a host of friends and family members. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 22, 2004 from 6-8 pm at Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral services will be held on Friday, 11 am at Big Mountain Church with Bro. Joey Cagley officiating. The body will lie in state from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow the funeral service in Petros Cemetery. VANDERGRIFF, RUBY KATE NINE-died peacefully after a productive life and a long illness. Born 4/6/1912 in Andersonville, TN, one of six siblings, married to Clyde Vandergriff (1936). Lifelong member of Inskip Baptist Church. Longtime LPN. As a fulltime, willing caregiver to her family and public, Ruby loved and was loved by many. Preceded in death by parents; five siblings; husband (1958); son, Paul (1967); daughter, Dorothy (2000). "Granny" is survived, loved, and fondly remembered by grandsons, Mark and Eric Varner, whom she taught to drive, play solitaire, and otherwise enjoy boyhood. Also survived by devoted son- in-law, Walker Varner; by loving niece and nephew, Mary Kate and Robert Nine; by special friends Joan and Chuck Bowers; and by many loving relatives and friends. Ruby was loved, and she will be missed. Family and friends will meet at 10:45a.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service and interment. Rev. Chuck Sayne officiating.
