    2. From The Oak Ridger 5 Jul 2004 Carlton Scott Salyer, 59, of Claxton, Elsie S. Prouty, 90, of Florence, Ala., William "Bill" R. Hooks, 81, of Claxton Randy Scott Johnson, 34, a resident of Clinton, Kelly Harness, 58 of Cleveland, Carlton Scott Salyer, 59, of Claxton, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at his home. He was the Anderson County health director for 33 years. And, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.Born June 18, 1945, in Bristol, Va., Salyer was preceded in death by his father, Carl Salyer. Survivors include his wife, Susan Salyer of Claxton; mother, Margaret Salyer of Clinton; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff Salyer and Jane of Clinton; nephew, Jeffrey Salyer Jr. and wife April of Cleveland; niece, Jana Salyer of Clinton; and nephew, James Salyer of Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral services following in the chapel with Dr. Fred Garmon officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date at Grandview Memorial Garden. The family has requested memorials be made to the Humane Society. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. Elsie S. Prouty, 90, of Florence, Ala., died Monday, June 28, 2004, at her home. She and her husband, Morton D. Prouty, who died in 1991, made Florence their home in 1949. Mrs. Prouty was active in the affairs of First Presbyterian Church serving as trustee, Women of the Church and as a Circle leader. She was also active in civic affairs as a member of Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts and the Salvation Army Auxiliary, serving as its president from 1971 to 1972. She was a member of Silver Belles and the Florence Study Club. Her family said she enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, reading and needlework. Mrs. Prouty is survived by two daughters, Catherine P. Horn and husband, Ronald, of Oak Ridge and Carol P. Ostberg and husband, Robert, of Cropwell, Ala.; two grandchildren, Robin Ostberg Sapp and Christopher Robert Ostberg, both of Cropwell; a sister-in-law, Jule Shipman, of Erie, Pa.; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Thursday, July 1, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Florence with the Rev. Dr. Larry Baskin and the Rev. Irving Rudolph officiating. Burial followed at Greenview Memorial Park. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Presbyterian Children's Home, P.O. Box 577, Talladega, AL 35160. Elkins Funeral Home in Florence is in charge of arrangements. William "Bill" R. Hooks, 81, of Claxton went home to be with his Lord on the morning of July 3, 2004, from the CCU at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Hospital. He was born in Anderson County on June 5, 1923. A faithful member and deacon of Edgemoor Baptist Church, Mr. Hooks delighted in teaching the "Willing Workers" Sunday School class whom he dearly loved. And, he was a past master of Alpha Lodge 376 FM. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II from 1943 to 1945 in Normandy Beach, France and Germany. He was retired from the Martin Marietta K-25 plant. Preceded in death by parents John and Martha Hooks. He leaves to cherish his loving memories, his beloved wife, whom he adored for 57 years, Alma Jean Webber Hooks. Survivors also include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Edsell of Smyrna; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Kay Hooks of Knoxville; grandchildren Tim Hooks and wife Cheryl, Brad Hooks and wife Mary, and Todd Hooks, all of Knoxville, and Chris and Barry Edsell, and Missy and husband Brandon Dailey, all of Smyrna; great-grandchildren, Elliott and Isaac Hooks of Knoxville, Kelsey Daily of Smyrna, and Drake Bristow of Oklahoma; and a half-brother, Raymond Hooks of Marlow. The family wishes to thank all the beloved members of the famous "Thirty-Niners" and all fellow members of Edgemoor Baptist; his fellow friends and walkers at the Clinton Community Center; his doctors, Dr. Gentry, Dr. Pardue and Dr. Bolan and the nurses in the CCU unit at Ft. Sanders Parkwest. Mr. Hooks' family said it will take great comfort in something said by one of his grandsons after he died: "Of all the people I have ever known in my life, I have never met another person so prepared to meet his maker as Papaw was. I want to be just like him." The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5, at Edgemoor Baptist Church with a celebration of life service following with the Revs. Charles Fritts and Mike Petty officiating. The graveside will be 10 a.m., Tuesday at Woodhaven Memorial Garden with a Masonicservice at graveside. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Arrangements are incomplete at Sharp Funeral Home.
