From The Knoxville News Sentinel 11 Jul 2004 ASHBURN, MATTIE EDITH - 85, of Oak Ridge HENSLEY, VIOLETTE - age 73, of Norris, PARKER, CHARLES EDWARD - age 61, of Maryville, SNEAD, HELEN LAMBERT- age 83, of Clinton, WALTERS, LEWIS NEIL - 65, of Heiskell ASHBURN, MATTIE EDITH - 85, of Oak Ridge died on July 9, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center. Born in Rickman, TN on November 7, 1918 to parents Carson C. and Lona Neeley Phillips. Mrs. Ashburn came to Oak Ridge in 1954 from Detroit, MI. A member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star #390. Among her hobbies she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Preceded in death by brothers, Talmadge Phillips and Joe Thomas Phillips; sister, Lillian Walker. Survivors include, husband, Hollis L. Ashburn, Oak Ridge; son, Philip Ashburn and wife, Mary, Oak Ridge; daughters, Cathy O'Connor and husband, Thomas. S., West Knoxville Sandra Stair and husband, John, Clinton; sisters, Zenobia Romines, Monterey, TN Frances Stockton and Tina Bacon of Oak Ridge Faye Elam, Cookeville, Jane Cooper, Rickman, TN; 5 grandchildren: Scott Ashburn and wife, Carmela Darek Ashburn and wife, Tracy all of Oak Ridge, Nick Walton, Knoxville Holly Webb and husband, Jeremy, Clinton John Stair, Jr., Clinton; 1 great-grandson, Robert Orlando Ashburn; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary on Monday evening, 8 PM with Rev. Vernon Sansom officiating. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, 10 AM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made in the form of donations to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 127 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge,TN 37830. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 - 8 PM at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge. HENSLEY, VIOLETTE - age 73, of Norris, passed away Friday, July 9. 2004 at her residence. She was a member of Norris First Baptist Church. She was President of the Good Neighbors in Norris for years. She was a bookkeeper at Anderson County after School Care for years. She was devoted to caring & helping others in time of need. She loved greatly & was loved by all. Preceded in death by parents, William & Lyda Johnston Ison. Survivors: daughter, Harriet Gamble of Norris; son, William "Bill" Hensley & wife Penney of Hyannis, MA; brother, Ronald Ison & wife Ginger of Johnson City; sister, Anne Riggs of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; grandchildren, Angie Duncan & husband Kelly of Clinton, Matthew Gamble of Knoxville, Sarah & husband Hal Lyday of Dallas, TX, David Hensley of Heiskell, Alicia & husband Gary Hatmaker of Lake City; great grandchildren, Ben & Gabi of Clinton, Spencer, Thomas & Ethan of Dallas, TX, Alexis & Tyler of Lake City; numerous nieces & nephews; special friends, Brenda & Denny Klender of Andersonville Nathan & Jamie Wade of Andersonville. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. PARKER, CHARLES EDWARD - age 61, of Maryville, died Friday, July 9, 2004 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was an employee at the Y-12 Facility at Oak Ridge for 33 years and was preceded in death by his Father, Charles T. Parker and his special friends, Neil Nolan and Odell Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Una Lee Giles Parker; mother, Jesse Kiker Parker, both of Maryville; son, Gabriel Parker of Knoxville, son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Katrina Holloway of Melborne, FL.; daughters, Diane Ferguson; Kay Miller and son-in-law David, and Patsy Schmidt, all of Maryville; beloved Yorke, Boo Boo; uncle, Grady Kiker; Aunt, Lillie Hart, both of Columbia, S.C., aunt, Mildred Watkins of Maryville; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; special cousin; JoeAnn Wilkinson; special friends: Steve Hayes, Major Hubbard, Tim Kimsey, and Norman and Margie Smith, and numerous cousins. Services will be held on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with the Reverends Tim Kimsey and Charles Bailey officiating. Interment will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Smith Mortuary, 983-1000, www.smithmortuary.com SNEAD, HELEN LAMBERT- age 83, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was a native of Greenback, Tennessee in Blount County. Helen met her husband Richard "Jack" while working for the ORNL Manhattan Project. They were married for 53 years prior to Richard's death in 1999. She was the Anderson County Juvenile Court Clerk from 1968-1983. Throughout, she was a devoted wife & mother who was actively involved in numerous athletic leagues involving her husband & sons. She was a past president of The Timely Topics Club & a member of United Memorial Methodist Church where she enjoyed serving on her the church altar guild. Preceded in death by husband, Richard "Jack" Snead; parents, Samuel George & Laura Thompson Lambert; brothers, Homer, Alexander, Edgar Eugene, Guy, Mack & Sam Lambert; sisters, Maude Emaline & Hazel Irene Lambert. Survivors: sons, Richard Lambert Snead & wife Melissa of Fairfax, VA, Joseph Jackson Snead of Houston, TX; sisters, Lena Lambert, Barbara Lambert; grandchildren, Richard Sterling Claiborne Snead, Laura Elizabeth Snead. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday in the chapel with Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating. Graveside services will follow at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. WALTERS, LEWIS NEIL - 65, of Heiskell died July 8, 2004 at his home. Mr. Walters was born August 7, 1938 in Morristown, Tennessee to Harold and Ellen Lewis Walters. He was retired from Tennessee Valley Authority Engineering Lab in Norris, Tn. He served in the United States Air Force and he enjoyed gardening and yard work. He is survived by three sons; Matthew Christopher Walters and his wife Angela of Knoxville, Neil Walters, Jr. and his wife Susan of Clarksville, Tn, and Steven Walters and his wife Tracy of Elkton, Ky.; one daughter, Tammy Keck of Clarksville, Tn; two brothers, Harold Ernest Walters III of Chattanooga, Tn, Gary Walters and his wife Sybil of Arlington, Tx; one sister, Wylene Owens of Oak Ridge; and ten grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 11, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating. Entombment will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park following the funeral service. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00-3:00 PM.
