From The Oak Ridger 12 Jul 2004 Mattie Edith Ashburn, 85, of Oak Ridge, Violette Hensley, 73, of Norris, Helen Lambert Snead, 83, of Clinton, Turner Dix Underwood, 73, of Maryville, formerly of Oak Ridge, Lewis Neil Walters, 65, of Heiskell, Shackelford, 65, of Clinton, Mattie Edith Ashburn, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Nov. 7, 1918, in Rickman, she was the daughter of Carson C. and Lona Neeley Phillips. Mrs. Ashburn came to Oak Ridge in 1954 from Detroit, Mich. She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star No. 390. Among her hobbies, her family said she enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Talmadge Phillips and Joe Thomas Phillips, and by a sister, Lillian Walker. Mrs. Ashburn is survived by her husband, Hollis L. Ashburn; her son, Philip Ashburn and wife, Mary, Oak Ridge; and by two daughters, Cathy O'Connor and husband, Thomas. S., of West Knoxville and Sandra Stair and husband, John, of Clinton. She is also survived by five sisters, Zenobia Romines of Monterey, Frances Stockton and Tina Bacon, both of Oak Ridge, Faye Elam of Cookeville and Jane Cooper of Rickman; five grandchildren, Scott Ashburn and wife, Carmela, and Darek Ashburn and wife, Tracy, all of Oak Ridge, Nick Walton of Knoxville, and Holly Webb and husband, Jeremy, and John Stair Jr., all of Clinton; one great-grandson, Robert Orlando Ashburn; and by numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Vernon Sansom officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 127 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Violette Hensley, 73, of Norris, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Hensley was a member of Norris First Baptist Church. She was president of the Good Neighbors of Norris for many years. She was also a bookkeeper at Anderson County After School Care for many years. According to her family, Mrs. Hensley was devoted to caring and helping others in time of need. Her family said she loved greatly and was loved by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lyda Johnston Ison. Mrs. Hensley is survived by her husband, H.W. "Buddy" Hensley; her daughter, Harriet Gamble, of Norris; her son, William "Bill" Hensley and wife, Penney, of Hyannis, Mass.; her brother, Ronald Ison and wife, Ginger, of Johnson City; and by her sister, Anne Riggs of Big Stone Gap, Va. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Angie Duncan and husband, Kelly, of Clinton, Matthew Gamble of Knoxville, Sarah Lyday and husband, Hal, of Dallas, Texas, David Hensley of Heiskell, and Alicia Hatmaker and husband, Gary, of Lake City; seven great-grandchildren, Ben and Gabi, both of Clinton, Spencer, Thomas and Ethan, all of Dallas, and Alexis and Tyler, both of Lake City; numerous nieces and nephews; and by special friends, Brenda and Denny Klender and Nathan and Jamie Wade, all of Andersonville. The funeral was Sunday, July 11, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. David Seiber and the Rev. T.D. Hooker officiating. A private graveside service was to be Monday, July 12, 2004, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to Good Neighbors of Norris, P.O. Box 452, Norris, TN 37828. Helen Lambert Snead, 83, of Clinton, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Snead was a native of Greenback in Blount County. She met her husband, Richard "Jack," while working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. They were married for 53 years prior to his death in 1999. She was the Anderson County Juvenile Court Clerk from 1968 to 1983. Throughout, Mrs. Snead was a devoted wife and mother, who was actively involved in numerous athletic leagues involving her husband and sons, her family said. She was a past president of the Timely Topics club and a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where her family said she enjoyed serving on the church altar guild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel George and Laura Thompson Lambert; six brothers, Homer Lambert, Alexander Lambert, Edgar Eugene Lambert, Guy Lambert, Mack Lambert and Sam Lambert; and by two sisters, Maude Emaline and Hazel Irene Lambert. Mrs. Snead is survived by two sons, Richard Lambert Snead and wife, Melissa, of Fairfax, Va., and Joseph Jackson Snead of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Lena Lambert and Barbara Lambert; and by two grandchildren, Richard Sterling Claiborne Snead and Laura Elizabeth Snead. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating. A graveside service will follow at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to Tennessee School for the Deaf, 2725 Island Home Blvd., Knoxville, TN 37920. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the funeral home. Turner Dix Underwood, 73, of Maryville, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Asbury Place of Maryville. He was the son of Jesse Lavadie and Hazel McHenry Underwood, both now deceased. Mr. Underwood served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1962. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Powell Valley. He had been a resident of Maryville for the last 18 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Paul Underwood. Mr. Underwood is survived by his daughter, Teresa Dawn Underwood-Calandra, and his son-in-law, Kevin Calandra, of Phoenix, Ariz.; his brother, Richard Scott Underwood Sr., of Oak Ridge; his grandson, Kyle Allen Calandra, of Phoenix; and by several nieces and nephews. The body will be cremated and a memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2004, at Asbury Retirement Center in Maryville. Lewis Neil Walters, 65, of Heiskell, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at his home. Born Aug. 7, 1938, in Morristown, he was the son of Harold and Ellen Lewis Walters. He was retired from Tennessee Valley Authority Engineering Lab in Norris. He served in the U.S. Air Force and his family said he enjoyed gardening and yard work. Mr. Walters is survived by three sons, Matthew Christopher Walters and wife, Angela, of Knoxville, Neil Walters Jr. and wife, Susan, of Clarksville and Steven Walters and wife, Tracy, of Elkton, Ky.; his daughter, Tammy Keck, of Clarksville; two brothers, Harold Ernest Walters III of Chattanooga and Gary Walters and wife, Sybil, of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Wylene Owens, of Oak Ridge; and by 10 grandchildren. The funeral was Sunday, July 11, 2004, in the chapel at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating. Burial followed at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Joyce Shackelford, 65, of Clinton, diedunday, July 11, 2004, due to injuries sustained from an auto accident.
