From The Oak Ridger 19 Jul 2004 Mary Lou Yates Beebe, 83, of Spartanburg, S.C., Charles Lewis Crowder Sr., 85, of Clinton, Novella Morgan Hammer Elza, Floyd Ward Kyte, 84 of Oak Ridge, Marshall Dunlap Lockhart, 94, of Oak Ridge, Mary Lou Yates Beebe, 83, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. She was the daughter of George and Sarah Tate Yates of Athens. She is the widow of Dr. Harwood Beebe, whom she married in 1951. Mrs. Beebe began her career in nursing as a nurse anesthetist and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg. According to her family, after her marriage, she devoted her life to her family, church and community. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister, E.K. Yates and George Anna Yates. Mrs. Beebe is survived by a son, Harwood Beebe III and wife, Barbara, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; a daughter, Anna Beebe Thomas and husband, Don, of Clinton, a sister-in-law, Mary Beebe Woodside of Memphis; three grandchildren, David Beebe and Emily Elizabeth Thomas, both of Knoxville, and Jennifer Starr Beebe of Charleston, S.C.; and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the Church of the Advent in Spartanburg with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Batkin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton was in charge of arrangements. Charles Lewis Crowder Sr., 85, of Clinton, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Crowder was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lettie Collins Crowder, a son, Herman Eugene Crowder, and a grandson, Tommy Crowder. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Clara Crowder; a son, Charles Lewis "Dude" Crowder Jr. and wife, Anita, of Shelbyville; a daughter, Patricia Diggs of Clinton; a brother, Fred Crowder and wife, Peggy, of Kingston; two sisters, Margaret Collins of Knoxville and Josephine Dunn of Harriman; and by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. No services will be held as Mr. Crowder requested. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Shriner's Children's Fund, Kerbela Shrine Temple, P.O. Box 1310, Knoxville, TN 37901. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. Novella Morgan Hammer Elza, died Friday, July 16, 2004, in Knoxville. She was born June 29, 1914, at Nance's Grove near New Market in Jefferson County into a family of early settlers to East Tennessee. Her parents were George Oscar and Agnes Morgan Hammer. She graduated from Old Knoxville High School and worked as buyer for the original Watson's on Market Square. She had been a pianist at Oakwood and Bell Avenue Baptist churches. Mrs. Elza moved with her husband and children to Oak Ridge in 1943. She traveled to China in 1946 with her three small children to join her husband who was working there with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency. She also lived in Vienna, Austria, in the 1960s when her husband was on assignment with the International Atomic Energy Agency. She had been active in Oak Ridge with the League of Women Voters, Oak Ridge Civic Music Association and the YWCA of Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Martin Elza, and six brothers and sisters. Mrs. Elza is survived by two daughters, Judith Crosland and her husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C., and Paula "Gheenie" Harris and her husband, Mike, of Oak Ridge; and her son, Michael Elza and his wife, Rita, of Flowery Branch, Ga. She is also survived by six grandchildren, William E. "Rocky" McClamroch, Michael T. McClamroch, Susannah Jackson Harris, Michael John Elza, Amanda Harris St. Amand and Christina Morgan Elza; and her eight great-grandchildren, Megan, Will and John McClamroch; Michaela, Olivia and Matthew Elza; Michael T.H. cClamroch; and Madeline Morgan St. Amand. In addition, Mrs. Elza is survived by two cousins, Agnes Nance Ledington and Mae Biddle; and by nieces and nephews, E.C. Greenlee, Hugh "Buddy" Hammer Jr., Gary Hammer, Eddie Hammer, Pat Bales, Wilma Ann Ross, Lupe Ross, Jane Elza, Eric Elza and Bill Elza. A graveside service for the family will be held Tuesday, July 20, 2004. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 19, Weatherford's Mortuary. Floyd Ward Kyte, 84 of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at NHC HealthCare Oak Ridge. Born March 19, 1920, in Carter County, he was the son of Alvin N. and Nettie Smith Kyte. Mr. Kyte was a retired electrician and instrument technician with Union Carbide Nuclear Division and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a deacon and member of Central Baptist Church, where he was constantly volunteering to lend a hand to many of the church's needs. He helped organize the first two Boy Scout troops in Oak Ridge. He was a Boy Scout leader and elected Scout master of a mock Boy Scout troop at the World's Fair in New York City in 1939. Among his other work and interests included help with starting the Boys Club of Oak Ridge, where he coached football. He had a passion for coaching track at Oak Ridge High School and the University of Tennessee. He received the Paul Cox Award for college and high school coaching early in his career. He was an avid fan of Oak Ridge High School and the University of Tennessee football and rarely missed an opportunity to support those teams. Some of his other hobbies included hiking, camping, ballroom dancing, square dancing, fixing up old cars, and taking up tickets for UT games He was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers, Gladys Westmoreland, Kathleen Kyte, Ed Kyte, Harmon Kyte, Verlin Kyte, F.D. Kyte, Martin Kyte, Clay Kyte and George Kyte, and by a grandson, Donald Kelly Myers. Mr. Kyte is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lillian Nichols Kyte; daughters, Jean Bardorf and husband, Bob, and Kathy Giles and husband, Tom, all of Oak Ridge; and a son, Joe Kyte of Murphy, N.C. He is also survived by grandchildren, Kelly Myers and wife, Amy, Danny Myers and wife, Donna Sharp, Laura Giles, T.J. Giles, all of Oak Ridge, and Grayson Kyte of Stuart, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Mahala Myers, Sam Myers, Sarah Jane Myers and Allison Myers, all of Oak Ridge; and by his brother, James Kyte and wife, Shirley, of Elizabethton. The funeral will be at 8p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Monday at the funeral home. Marshall Dunlap Lockhart, 94, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Briarcliff Health Care Center after a colorful life of active usefulness. Her daughter, Marshall Lockhart Vitullo, of Ellicott City, Md., survives. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burgwin Lockhart Jr., and her son, George Burgwin Lockhart III. According to her family, Mrs. Lockhart was a woman of unusual talents and great kindness whose warmth and wit touched many lives. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 and quickly became a fixture in the theater and art scene here. She also appeared in three motion pictures. Her numerous other interests included painting, needlework, crafts, gardening, writing, and reading. She enjoyed, above all, the company of family and friends. She helped found the Oak Ridge Community Playhouse, where she acted and directed, and the Foothills Craft Guild. She also belonged to the Southern Highland Craft Guild, and to the Tennessee Mountain Writers Inc. In the last decade of her life, she wrote and performed skits with Oak Ridge native and actor Ted Lehmann, and with Paul Ebert, former director of the Oak Ridge Playhouse. Born January 8, 1910, in Roxboro, N.C., Mrs. Lockhart was the daughter of Edgar and Mary Dunlap. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, she practiced social work in New York City for a year before returning to similar work in rural North Carolina. She married George Lockhart in 1934. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Lockhart is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Lockhart of Oak Ridge; her grandchildren, Michael Vitullo and his wife, Cindy, of Carpentaria, Calif., Mitchell Vitullo and his wife, Mary, of Columbia, Md., and Emily Maffin and her husband, Robert, of Baltimore, Md., and her local grandchildren, Amy Byrd and her husband, Paul, Molly Bookout, and Sarah Parsons and her husband, Todd. Mrs. Lockhart is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Wiley Vitullo of Carpentaria, Melanie and Danielle Vitullo of Columbia, Eric and Nichole Martin of Baltimore, and Rachel and Reagan Byrd, Aaron and Olivia Bookout, and Emily Parsons, all of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends and celebrate Mrs. Lockhart's life at the home of Emily and Charlie Jernigan, 118 Claymore Lane. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Memorial Fund of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N.
