    2. FVrom The Oak Ridger 13 Jul 2004 Dr. Harry Ray Child, 75, of Oak Ridge, Michael Tom Fowler, 56, of Oak Ridge, Dr. Harry Ray Child, 75, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at his home. Born Oct. 30, 1928, in Bedford, Ind., he was the son of Ray Bruce Child and Louva Helen Child of Austin, Texas. He moved with his family to Austin, Texas in 1936 from California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school graduation and served from 1948 to 1951 as a photographer instructor. After his discharge from the army, Dr. Child attended the University of Texas and graduated with a bachelor's degree. After graduation, he moved to Oak Ridge with his wife, Mary, in 1956 to work for Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While employed there, he attended the University of Tennessee and received his doctorate degree in physics in 1965. He was a member of the American Physical Society and listed in Who's Who in Technology Today. He was an author/co-author of over 100 scientific papers. Dr. Child retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Sept. 30, 1993. After retirement, he continued work at the laboratory consulting. He was a member of the Camera Club, the East Tennessee Computer Society, Oak Ridge PC Users Group and Friends of ORNL. Dr. Child enjoyed photography, reading fishing, classical music and travel, his family said. Dr. Child is survived by his wife, Mary L. Child, whom he married in Austin on Sept. 3, 1954. He is also survived by his son, Garry L. Child and daughter-in-law, Anne McKown Child of Austin. "The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Bowles, Dr. Kenneth Luckmann, Dr. Michael Thompson and Dr. Steven Teague for their concern during Ray's illnesses, along with the staff in the Emergency Room, the Anderson Ambulance and Oak Ridge Rescue Squad, the nurses on 3 West at Methodist Medical Center and Covenant Hospice," his family said. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Cable, Bob Nicklow, Charles Weber and Jaime Fernandez-Baca. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909 or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Michael Tom Fowler, 56, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at his home. He was born Jan. 20, 1948, in Canyon, Texas. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1966 and attended East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. He was an avid fisherman and his family said he knew all the good fishing spots. According to his family, Mr. Fowler enjoyed playing chess and was a talented writer and wrote numerous articles about fishing for the Knoxville Journal and various magazines. For a brief period, he wrote the "Outdoors" column for The Oak Ridger and covered fishing tournaments. He also worked as a security guard. Mr. Fowler is survived by his parents Waunett and Tom Bill Fowler. His family said the body was cremated as he requested and there will be no public funeral.
