    2. From The Knoxville News Sentinel 1 Jul 2004 BROOKS, MRS. VONDELL INEZ - age 77 of Clinton, COOK, CONRAD - age 68, of Knoxville, native of Crites, W. Virginia, (I am sure many of you will remember this gentleman, I do very well) DYER, HUGH SCOTT (SCOTTY) - of Knoxville, McBIRNEY, MARY ELLEN - age 83, of LaFollette, VILES, ARDLE "ART" L. - 67, born in Clinton TN. BROOKS, MRS. VONDELL INEZ - age 77 of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Viril (Hawn) Beasley; her husband, Leonard R. Brooks; two sisters. She is survived by her children, Michael L. Brooks of Paducah, KY, Linda Garmon of Doraville, GA, Pat Mitchell of Clinton, TN; grandchildren: Michelle Coleman of Paducah, KY, Teresa Stratton of Minote, North Dakota, Brad Garmon and Todd Case, both of Georgia, Lonnie, David, John, Chris, and Jonathan Mitchell, all of Clinton and Mark Mitchell of Kingston; sister, Fern Evans of Knoxville; and brother, Vernon Beasley of Sunbright; thirteen great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday, July 2, 2004 from 11-1 at South Clinton Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 1 pm with Michael Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sunbright. COOK, CONRAD - age 68, of Knoxville, native of Crites, W. Virginia, well known songwriter and Gospel singer, went to join his Heavenly Father, the "General", on Tuesday, June 29, 2004. He attended W. Virginia Tech, where he graduated with a Degree in Music. He was a Band Director for 25 years, being a great inspiration to young people. Conrad traveled extensively throughout the United States, with his family, spreading the Gospel in song. Conrad will be missed by a vast number of friends and singing groups with whom he has performed over the years. Favorite songs he wrote were: Glory Road, The Old Ship of Zion, Moses Take Yours Shoes Off, Hallelujah to the Lamb, Saints Will Rise, My Anchor Still Holds, When My Feet Touch The Streets of Gold, Somebody Prayed For Me and Standing On Holy Ground, which have made him a well known personality in the Gospel Music Field. Some of his specialties were performed on the "Gaither Homecoming" videos. What a great loss we have experienced. Preceded in death by: daughter, Shawn Denise Cook; parents, Lawrence and Minta Cook; brother, Bernard Cook; twin brother and sister, Charles and Charlotte Cook. Survived by: loving wife of 42 years, Patricia Noe Cook; daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Cliff Adkins; three grandchildren, Jada, Brittany and Cliff; sister, Mary Frances Preston of Bristol; brothers, Rufus and wife Myrtle Cook of Panama City, FL, Burley and wife Vernie Cook of Port St. Lucie, FL and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services 11:00 am Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rev. Kern Spangler and Rev. Jack Chapman officiating. Internment to follow at Victory Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers: Steve Hall, Roger Foster, Bobby Camp, Glen Pressley, Dallas Green and Mike Shelby. The family will receive friends Thursday, 6-9 pm at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. DYER, HUGH SCOTT (SCOTTY) - of Knoxville, passed away, June 29, 2004 at Baptist Hospital. Born to John and the late Robbie O. Dyer in LaFollette, TN, May 1, 1961. He moved to Knoxville in 1964; attended Fairgarden Elementary School; Park Junior High School and Austin- East High School. He became a member of Lennon-Seney United Methodist Church at an early age. For several years he worked as a cook at different restaurants and detailed cars for his friends. Preceded in death by: his mother, Robbie O. Dyer. Survivors: children, Jonathan Dyer and Whitney Dyer; loving father, John B. Dyer; sisters, Doretha A. Lee, Asheville, NC, Valerie (Harold) Smith, Karen Wynn, Knoxville, TN; brother, John B. (Rhoda) Dyer, III, Havelock, NC; aunts, Edith Dyer, Corinth, MS, Ravine Williams, Tulsa, OK; uncle, Harold (Mae) Swann, Rockwood, TN; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Knoxville and Rockwood. Family will receive friends, 12:30-1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 3, 2004 at Lennon-Seney United Methodist Church, 2084 Dandridge Ave.; funeral service, 1:00 p.m., Rev. Dr. Adam McKee III, officiating. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. Family will assemble at 124 Andes St. Arrangements by Jarnigan & Son Mortuary. McBIRNEY, MARY ELLEN - age 83, of LaFollette, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a member of Gintillie Methodist Church in New Orleans, LA. She was a 1st Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII and retired as a Registered Nurse. Preceded in death by parents, Jim Ette & Elizabeth Smith Miller; brother, James Miller & sisters, Beulah Miller & Flossie Hackworth. Survivors: brothers & sisters-in-law: Albert & Sue Miller, LaFollette, Robert & Margaret Miller, Texas, Christine Miller, Glen Burnie, MD; several nieces, nephews & cousins. At her request, her body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Cross Funeral Home. VILES, ARDLE "ART" L. - 67, of Pinehurst Lane in Newton died unexpectedly, Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. Born August 4, 1936 in Clinton, TN he was the son of the late Mose and Nora Cook Viles. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newton. He was a 1959 graduate of the University of Tennessee, a 1996 recipient of the "Distinguished Alumnus" Award and a member of the College of Business Administration Advisory Council to the Dean and member of the Board of Development of the University of Tennessee. Mr. Viles was the former President of Superior Cable Corporation of Hickory. He was an Advisory Board Member for the Salvation Army Corps, an Advisory Council Board Member for the Boys and Girls Club, and previous officer of both Salvation Army Groups. He was a long-time executive board member of the Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts of America, chairing many scouting campaigns and events. He was a board member of the Newton-Conover Rotary Club and a Local Advisory Board Member of BB&T. Mr. Viles was supporter of higher education including the University of Tennessee, Lenoir Rhyne, Lees McRae, CVCC and N.C. State University. He was a world traveler and loved to study the arts and cultures of the various countries he visited. He was a U.S. Veteran, having served in the Air National Guard. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law: Janelle Viles and Paul Michael Bolick of Hickory, NC; A son: Eric Andrew Viles of Newton; 3 grandchildren: Daniel Lee Bolick, Maranda Jean Bolick, Erika Thomas; A great grandchild: Gavin Thomas; A brother and sister-in-law: Jerry and Naomi Viles of Memphis, TN ; A special friend: Beth Smith of Newton. A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2004 at First United Methodist Church in Newton with Rev. Daniel Martin and Major Timothy Carter of the Salvation Army officiating. A private graveside service will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Active and honorary pallbearers will be members of the Newton-Conover Rotary Club and Tracy Saunders and Red Thornton. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 1 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Willis- Reynolds Funeral Home.
