From The Oak Ridger 24 Sep 2004 Ramon "Ray" P. Borja, 71, of St. Augustine, Fla., Geneva Evelyn Gouge Carter Chmura, 80, Lois Ann Crowe, 63, of Oliver Springs, Edward D. Hill, 83, of Oak Ridge, Julia Turman Moss, 87, of Lascassas, formerly of Oak Ridge, Lucille Ruffner, 89 of Coalfield, Ramon "Ray" P. Borja, 71, of St. Augustine, Fla., died of cancer Saturday Sept. 4, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 27, 1932, in Agana, Guam. Mr. Borja served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, until he retired at the rank of chief warrant officer. During his career in the Army, he received a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and two Meritorious Service awards among numerous other military citations. He was also a Shriner and a Free Mason. Mr. Borja is survived by his wife, Sylvia Borja; his daughters, Carol Slaughter of Gainesville, Ga., Pam Vasseur and Susan Epps, both of Houston, Texas, Angela Sherry of Oak Ridge and Teresa Borja of Silver Spring, Md.; his brother, Juan Borja of Agana, Guam; and by ten grandchildren and nieces and nephews. The funeral and burial will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors. Geneva Evelyn Gouge Carter Chmura, 80, formerly of Cattleman Drive, Lenoir City, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City. Mrs. Chmura was a member of the Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Knoxville and was the owner and operator of Beauty Salons with American Baptist Association in Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Gouge; her beloved husband of 51 years, Thomas Aubrey Carter; four brothers and a sister, Johnny Gouge, Ed Gouge, Warren Gouge, Tommie Gouge and Sue Martin; and two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Benny Rosenthal, Margaret C. Baker and her husband, Homer Baker, and Thelma St. Denis. Mrs. Chmura is survived by her loving daughter, Audrey Clark and her husband, Bruce, of Lenoir City; her sister, Betty Austin and her husband, Wallace, of Harriman; her brother Everette Gouge of Monrovia, Calif.; her sisters-in-law, Sue Strasser and her husband, Joseph, of Nashville, Ruth Rosenthal of Clarksville, and Madge Hamby of Florence, Ala.; and by several of nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Walter Shea Jr. and all of the health care personnel at Baptist Health Care Center for their dignified and compassionate care. The funeral will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leonard Turner, pastor, and the Rev. Nick Coker, youth minister, officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the church. Evans Mortuary in Rockwood is in charge of arrangements. Lois Ann Crowe, 63, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at her home. Born July 12, 1941, in Logansport, Ind., she was the daughter of Raymond and Margaret Casper Tatman. She moved to Oliver Springs in 1969 and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oliver Springs. She and her husband, Robert Crowe, founded and successfully operated Crotec Electronic Controls for over 20 years. She was recognized as a "Who's Who of the Independent Business Owners of America." Mrs. Crowe loved children and was very interested in their welfare and volunteered her time at Norwood schools, her family said. She was also active in the first group of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers in Anderson County. In addition, she was involved in Girl Scouts of America and the Oak Ridge Junior Bowling Association. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crowe is survived by her children, Dawn Patterson of Oliver Springs, Bryan Tinkle of Knoxville, Robert G. Tinkle and wife, Sandra, of Oliver Springs, and Kara Blevins and husband, Lary, of Oak Ridge; her stepchildren, David Crowe and wife, Sherry, of Oak Ridge, Roberta Griffin and husband, Ed, of Lacey's Springs, Ala., Michael Crowe and wife, Shari, of Madison, Ala., Phillip Crowe and wife, Trudy, of Chattanooga and Timothy Crowe and wife, Renee, of Chicago, Ill. She is also survived by her brother, Gordon Tatman of Elkhart, Ind.; and by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Bobby Barton and the Rev. Perry Duncan officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the funeral home. Edward D. Hill, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born June 22, 1921, in Knox County, he was the son of Daniel Briscoe Hill and Lillie Ebbs Hill. He was a graduate of Halls High School. A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. During the war, he served in South Pacific theater and received a Bronze Star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Upon leaving the service, he attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for a short period of time until he was recalled back into the military because of the Korean War. He served another nine years of military service and was discharged in 1953. He was an active member of Central Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where he served as Trustee, taught Sunday School classes and helped in the Preschool Department, which was very dear to him, because of his love for children, his family said. He was also a mason. According to his family, he loved spending time helping others and was known as "Mr. Fix It." He was loved by all who knew him. Mr. Hill retired in 1984 from Union Carbide Corp., after 29 years of service at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, also known as X-10. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Melvin Hill, Mildred Breeden, Kenneth Hill and Lillian Hall. Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dottie Hansard Hill; his son, Brent Hill and wife, Mary, of Powder Springs, Ga.; his daughter, Deena Dunham of Oak Ridge; his sisters-in-law, Mildred Park and Mildred Hansard, both of Knoxville; and seven grandchildren, Destin E. Hill and wife, April, of August, Ga.; Sean W. Hill of Athens, Ga.; Tyson C. Hill of Powder Springs, Ga.; and Aimee N. Dunham, Trey B. Dunham, Scott D. Dunham and Lacey A. Dunham, all of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Gray and the Rev. Bobby Mullins officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway. The Veterans United Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
