From The Oak Ridger 9 Dec 2004 Louis Webster Cody Sr., 62, of Clinton, Earl Estes Goode Jr., 81, Charlie Walter Hunter Sr., better known as "C.W." or "Charles", of Oak Ridge, Ruthetta Walls Justice, age 67, a resident of Harriman, Bertha Mercer, 93, of Oak Ridge, Ralph W. Purnell, 69, of Las Vegas, Nev., Louis Webster Cody Sr., 62, of Clinton, died on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was employed at Wackenhut at the Oak Ridge K-25 site for 27 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served two tours in Vietnam in the Military Police Unit. He belonged to the Atomic City Sportsmen's Club, East Tennessee Pinochle Club, and Fraternal Order of Police, Tennessee State Lodge. He was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Cody was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Webster and Emma Lou Cody, and his sister, Essie Marshal Neal Cody-Washington. He is survived by his wife, Frountice Donna Cody of Clinton; his children, Norman Louis Cody of Austin, Texas, Tonya Michelle Cody of Dickinson, Texas, Dawn Trista Cody and Dejuan Tracy Cody, both of Knoxville, and Louis Webster Cody Jr. of Only; and his grandchildren, Jacquez, Bree, Chance, Cameron, Darrion, Bryan, Sha-Dora, Stacy, Norman, Jr., Avion, Darius, Ronnie and Tonyell. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Clementine Cody of Clarksville, Joe Daniel Cody of Louisville, Ky., Homer and Barbara Cody of Memphis, and Wanda and Sherman Matthews of Knoxville; his in-laws, Leslie Smith and Anthony and Sharon Ramsey, all of Clinton, and Robert and Torrance Petties of Roanoke, Va.; his beloved nieces and nephews, Emma and Coatney Michell, Nikkii Cody, Walter Cody, Jeffrey Cody, Danny, Elan and Sam Matthews, Rachel and Justin Cody, Danielle, Deus and DeAndre Smith, and Tony, Chris, Amber and Sheree Ramsey; his devoted friends, Al and Mary Guidry and William Caldwell; his former spouse, Ernestine Cody; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Clinton. Pastor William Caldwell will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Campbell County Honor Guard. Earl Estes Goode Jr., 81, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at his home with his family by his side. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer for four years because he loved life and his family. Mr. Goode was born on May 19, 1923, in Brinkley, Ark. He loved his country and was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Rim as a Sonar Specialist on a PC1129 naval escort ship. His ship was sunk by a Japanese suicide boat on Jan. 31, 1945, the same day on which, according to World War II historians, American prisoners were freed from the Japanese prison camps. Mr. Goode graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Industrial Management, and began his 41-year career working at the Department of Energy facilities in Oak Ridge for Union Carbide and Martin Marietta. He was initially employed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and transferred after three years to the Y-12 Plant. Th groups which he supervised at Y-12 included Cash, Travel, Timekeeping, Facilities Management, and Shipping and Receiving. Mr. Goode was a skilled photographer, gardener and animal lover. He also took great pleasure in coaching church league girls' basketball teams, and in supporting his wife, Pat, and her high school varsity volleyball and track teams at Karns High School. He was also very active in the foundation of the Oak Ridge Camp Fire Girls camps and programs. Mr. Goode's parents, Earl Goode Sr. and Nancy Goode, are both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Jarvis Goode of Oak Ridge; his daughters, Judy Jones and husband, Steve, of Gatlinburg, and Jill Goode Freeman and husband, Mark, of Lexington, Ky.; his grandson, Don Frederick and wife, Hilari; his granddaughter, Lauren Freeman; and his great-grandson, Forrest Frederick. Mr. Goode's body was cremated in accordance with his wishes. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Pastor Kerra Becker English will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday. Charlie Walter Hunter Sr., better known as "C.W." or "Charles", of Oak Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2004 at the age of 77. Charlie was born on Dec. 25, 1926, in Opelika, Ala. He was the second of four children. He was preceded in death by both his parents, Abbie Gaie Vinson and Gus Hunter; and one sister, Annie M. Gipson. Charlie Hunter came to Oak Ridge in the early 1940s and helped build the city, to which he was given a key. Charlie was the owner and operator of C & H Car Wash for more than 24 years. The Lord saved Charlie at an early age, and he was a faithful servant unto the Lord at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served as trustee, Pastor's Aide president and member of the male chorus. Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Joyce A. Hunter of Oak Ridge; one son, Charles W. Hunter, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Oak Ridge; his daughters, Jocelyn Ray of Knoxville, and Charita Bounds and husband, Marlon, of Mannheim, Germany; one brother, John Henry Vinson of Jamaica, N.Y.; one sister, Lillie Ann Ogletree of Chicago; one aunt, Mary Lizzy Nelson of Apopka, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Gabriella Arnwine, Charles Hunter III, Christopher Hunter, Jamaica Oliver, Tayler Bounds, Tasha Bounds, and Marlon Bounds, Jr. He is also survived by two god children, Aaron White and Darryl Bonner, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 195 Wilberforce Avenue in Oak Ridge, with Elder Charles W. Hunter Jr. and Elder T. L. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com. Ruthetta Walls Justice, age 67, a resident of Harriman, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Justice was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Cumberland, Ky., the daughter of Harlan R. Walls and Mildred Cox Walls. She moved to Tennessee in early childhood. She was an active member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where she drove a church bus, cooked and worked in the Bible print ministry, taught Sunday school, and supported the Mt. Pisgah Christian Academy. Mrs. Justice was a person who mixed well with strangers. She was a devout Christian who loved to talk about the Lord, and she witnessed to all with whom she came in contact. She was a Roane County school bus driver for 18 years. She was very conscious about the seriousness of transporting children to and from school, and she always prayed for their safety. In addition, she was chair of the Roane County bicentennial cookbook committee, a member of the Roane County heritage book committee, and an active member of the Oliver Springs Historical Society. Her hobbies included oil painting, porcelain dolls, and cooking, especially for those who were ill. She was known as the pie lady around the Roane County Courthouse. Her greatest hobby was fishing. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Justice was preceded in death by her twin sister, Rosella Walls, and another sister, Virginia Walls Tucker. Mrs. Justice is survived by her husband of 50 years, Tommy H. Justice; her daughters, Jenny Edwards and Dee Holmes and husband, Nathan, all of Harriman; her grandchildren, Amanda Holmes, Logan Holmes and Ashley Edwards, all of Harriman, and Stephanie Quist of Knoxville; and her great-granddaughter, Colette Quist of Knoxville. She is also survived by her brother, David Walls and wife, Patricia, of Knoxville; her sister, Phyllis Lunn and husband, John, of Knoxville; her brothers-in-law, Donald Justice and wife, Wilma, and Marvin Justice and wife, Doris; her sisters-in-law, Elnora Justice and husband, Lester, Reba Lou Farmer and husband, Charlie, and Patricia Gann; and a host of nieces and nephews, special friends and extended family members. Born in Spring Lick, Ky., to parents Charles Robert and Martha Ann McCaroll Stone, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and reading. In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Gomez Mercer; five brothers; one sister; her daughter, Emily Jean Gurchek; her grandsons, John Martich and Thomas Gurchek; and her beloved dog, Cookie. Mrs. Mercer is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Robbie M. and Bernard Kotarski, Mary Louise and John Martich; and son-in-law Frank Gurchek. The family plans a private burial service at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Ind., on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004. Cremation Options Inc. in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements. Ralph W. Purnell, 69, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at his home.
