He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton. Mr. Bowling was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Temple and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Albert Bowling Sr. and Carolyn Sowers Bowling; and by his sister, Jane Bowling Miller and husband, Harry F. Mr. Bowling is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Dossett Bowling; two daughters, Carolyn B. Wilson of Rockwood and Billie Sue Hammer and husband, Jeff, of Clinton; four grandchildren, Susan and husband, Aaron Ficken, of Rockwood, Charley Wilson of Asheville, N.C., and Will Hammer and Clay Hammer, both of Andersonville; his cousin, Jane Louise Beck Venable and husband, Bruce, of Cincinnati, Ohio; his niece, Mary Jane Miller, of Oak Ridge; and by his nephew, Harry F. "Herky" Miller Jr. and wife, Suzanne, of San Antonio, Texas. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Sam Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the funeral home. Samuel L. Carden, 81, of Knoxville, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. Carden was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army-Air Corps and was a pilot instructor for B-17 and B-29 bombers. He received the Victory Medal and the ATO Ribbon, both for World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel L. and Bertha Weaver Carden, and by his sister, Madeline Miller. Mr. Carden is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Smardon and husband, Art, of West Chester, Ohio, and Cindy Baker and husband, Jim, of Amelia Island, Fla.; three grandchildren, Lee Ann McKnight of Knoxville, James Hiser IV of Amelia Island, Fla., and Abby Smardon of Columbus, Ohio; his great-granddaughter, Madison Hiser, of Amelia Island; his grandnephew, Steve McNish, of Knoxville; and by several cousins. A graveside service was to be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with full military rites with the Rev. Jimmy Stroud officiating. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. Ben Tipton Crutchfield, 85, of Claxton, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. Mr. Crutchfield was a member of Valley View United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He retired from Tennessee Valley Authority as an engineering technician after 26 years. He was a amateur radio operator and his family said he enjoyed gardening, bowling, traveling America and watching the Vols. He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Martha Collinsworth Crutchfield; a sister, Bea and husband, Ed, of Tazewell; and by three brothers, James Crutchfield and wife, Pansy Williams Crutchfield, and Joe Neal Crutchfield, all of Tazewell, and Basil Crutchfield and wife, Dorothy Kincaid Crutchfield, of Monroe, Mich. Mr. Crutchfield is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geneve Cline Crutchfield of Powell; two daughters, Carolyn Peters and husband, Charles, of Monroe, and Sandra Runions and husband, Roy, of Clinton; his son, Terry Crutchfield and wife, Diane Brooks Crutchfield, of Knoxville; three grandchildren, Eric Peters and wife, Chris, of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Andrea Peters and Courtney Peters, both of Monroe; and by two great-grandchildren, Jessica Peters and Eli Peters. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Rowland and husband, Carl, of Fredricksburg, Ind.; his brother, William Y. Crutchfield and wife, Floy Love Crutchfield, of Houston, Texas; his sister-in-law, Hazel Buchanan Crutchfield, of Tazewell; and by several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Brenda "Gail" Day, 51, of Lake City, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Born Jan. 31, 1953, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of Sara Reed of Clinton and Charles Rolston of Jacksboro. Mrs. Day attended First Baptist Church in Lake City. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, W.D. Reed. In addition to her mother and father, Mrs. Day is survived by her husband, Gary Day; two daughters, Jennifer Hill and fiancé, Chris Curtin, of Clinton, and Amy Day of Lake City; her stepsister, Judy Clark and husband, Dave, of Bluff City; two stepbrothers, Charles Rolston of Jacksboro and Mark Rolston of Wichita, Kan.; and by her granddaughter, Katie Hill, of Clinton. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Brian Courtney officiating. Victoria "Vicki" Marlene Ewing, 49, of Arkansas Pass, Texas, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004. Born Oct. 13, 1954, in Oak Ridge, she was the daughter of Frances Juanita Marlow Ewing of Oak Ridge and William McKay Ewing, now deceased. Her brother, John Ewing, also died earlier. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Ewing is survived by her son, Eric Johnson, and her granddaughter, Brittany Johnson, both of Pontiac, Mich. She is also survived by her brother, Dewey Ewing and wife, Candace, of Stratford, Conn.; his sister, Susan Ewing, of Oak Ridge; his sister-in-law, Adelina Ewing, of Raleigh, N.C.; and by his special friends, Ray Lee, Frankie Simmons and Gary Brown of Arkansas Pass. Maggie Helen Hopper, 88, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at her home, surrounded by her family. Her family said she was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was married to the Rev. Rupert Hopper, now deceased, for 64 years. According to her family she was a devoted wife and homemaker, who raised seven loving children. Her family said she enjoyed gardening, reading and quilting, and she was a talented seamstress. Her family said her true and loving devotion was for her husband and family. Mrs. Hopper was a longtime and oldest member of Leatherwood Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, William Harvey and Mary Emma Mason Robinson; two sisters, Easter Robinson and Hester Carr and husband, Gillis; her brother, the Rev. Fern D. Robinson and wife, Melva; a granddaughter, Alicia Danielle Perrin; and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Ellen Hopper. Mrs. Hopper is survived by two sons, Beagle Hopper and wife, Wanda, of Tazewell and the Rev. James Hopper and wife, Karen; five daughters, Mary Ellen Collins and husband, Randolph, Tinnie Sue Rosson and husband, Danty Lee, and Emma Dean Parks, all of New Tazewell, Joyce Ann Chattin and husband, Fred, of Oak Ridge, and Martha Perrin and husband, David, of Spring City; and by 15 grandchildren, Christine Stapelton, Richard Collins, Kenneth Collins, Jeffrie Collins, Marc Chattin, Susan Chattin, Jacob Hopper, Ronnie Lee Rosson, Amy Lynn Ferrell, Misty Ann Ray, Sarah Perrin, Jason Barrett Parks, Heather Marie Parks, Amanda Barrett and Carrie Hopper. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Myrtle Collins and husband, Dewey, of New Tazewell; and by several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral was Sunday, March 7, 2004, in the chapel of Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell with the Rev. Bruce Robinson and the Rev. Greg Sharp officiating. Burial was to be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 8, at Hopper Cemetery in Tazewell. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
