From The Oak Ridger 29 Apr 2004 Sudie Mae Edwards, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Born Sept. 7, 1920, in Morganton, N.C., she was the daughter of Fred and Florence Shuping Smith. Mrs. Edwards worked for many years as a clerk at the U.S. Marine Corp. Post Exchange in Parris Island, S.C. She was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church in Port Royal, S.C., and was involved in many of the activities of the church. She came to Oak Ridge about six years ago from Beaufort, S.C., to be near her daughter. Before her health declined, her family said she enjoyed sewing and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William H. Newsom, in April 1966 and George Thomas Edwards, in September 1974. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughter, Janet Newsom Haire and husband, Marvin Jonathan Haire, of Oak Ridge; her sister, Pearl Jodoin, of Beaufort; and by two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Bondos and husband, Joseph, and Rebecca Anne Nutbrown and husband, Thomas, all of Houston, Texas. The funeral will be at noon Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Amanda Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to Keystone Elder Day Center of First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
