Chandler, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a heart attack. Mr. Chandler was a native of Salisbury, N.C. His education included a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University, and Advanced Engineering Certificate in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, and a certificate in nuclear engineering from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. During World War II, Mr. Chandler served in Europe with Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, 5th Infantry Division, Company C, 10th Infantry Regiment. On Dec. 16, 1944, Mr. Chandler's division was ordered to Eckternach, Luxembourg, where he joined in the American counter-attack against the German army during the Battle of the Bulge. He was on the front lines in combat from Dec. 18 to Jan. 28, 1945, when he was taken prisoner at Putscheid on the Our River. In early March, Mr. Chandler managed to escape while being transported between labor camps in Germany and led several other prisoners of war back to advancing American forces and freedom. Mr. Chandler had more than four decades of experience with nuclear chemical processes and waste management, working primarily at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He served the Atomic Energy Industry in pilot plant development and demonstration of radiochemical separation processes, uranium fuel preparation, construction projects for IPET and the Remote Operations Maintenance Demonstration pilot plant at the Enhanced Gas Cooled Reactor site of the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor, now called the Fuel Recycle Division. As manager of the ORNL Metal Recovery Plant, he processed large amounts of spent nuclear reactor fuel to recover and purify large amounts of uranium, plutonium and americium. Earlier in his career, he also served as mill superintendent of Union Carbide's Uravan and Rifle, Colorado, uranium and vanadium mills. Loaned to the Atomic Energy Commission in 1973, he was assigned to assist in the preparation of the first version of an environmental impact document for the nuclear reactor fuel cycle. According to his family, Mr. Chandler was proud of his long service with Serenity Club in Oak Ridge, leading group meetings there for nearly two decades. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Alice Williams, of Lynchburg, Va. Mr. Chandler is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; two sons, Dr. John M. Chandler and wife, Susi, of Bristol, and Ralph C. Chandler and wife, Mirtha, of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Robert L. Chandler and wife, Valerie, of Terrell, N.C.; a sister, Polly Tillman and husband, Harvey, of Newport, N.C.; and by three grandsons, Jeremy Chandler and Chris Chandler, both of Bristol, and Atticus Graybill of Atlanta. Deanna Michele "Dee" Ely, 28, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at her home. She was a member of Covenant Life International in Lake City. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Feichter. She is survived by her husband, Ace Ely; two sons, Cody Allen Lee, 12, and Tyler James Feichter, 6; two stepchildren, Anna Ely and Joseph Ely, both 8; four brothers, Zachary Brown, 16, Tristan Brown, 15, Nathan Brown, 14, and Jarod Correll, 24, of Florida; a special aunt, Jaki Correll; her best friend, Katrina; and by several other special aunts, uncles, grandparents, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, in the chapel of Weaver Funeral Home in Knoxville with the Rev. Tony McAfee officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Ann Parker Hale, 84, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospice in Knoxville. She was a Church of Christ. She was a preceded in death by her husband, James Leon Hale; her parents, John M. and Annie Doyal Parker; and by four siblings, Mary Louise Parker, Elsie Parker Hale, John Parker and Helen Parker Pearce. Mrs. Hale is survived by her daughter, Ann Judkins and husband, Joe, of Oak Ridge; and by two grandchildren, Brant Judkins of Yokasuka, Japan, and Amanda Fowler and husband, Joel, of Chattanooga. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2004, at the U.S. National Cemetery in Chattanooga with the Rev. John Cupp officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to St. Mary's Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37938 or to the Oak Ridge Humane Society, 110 Winston Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Carol Evelyn Zang, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Ballantine. Mrs. Zang is survived by three daughters, Carol Beardsley of Columbus, Ga., Lois Bumpus and husband, James, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Evelyn Zang of Oak Ridge; three granddaughters, Evelyn Jo Good and husband, Charles, of Chanute, Kan., Robin Hollon and husband, Henry, of West Virginia, and Stacey Vernon and husband, James, of Poplar Bluff; one grandson, Robert Bumpus and wife, Tammie, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and by six great-grandchildren, Audrey Vernon, Carr Vernon, Chloe Vernon and Zhoe Bumpus, all of Poplar Bluff, Taryn Good of Chanute and Ryan Hollon of West Virginia. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. Hazel Berry, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.
