List I did not post anyone's name when I replied to the List. I don't want anyone to start an argument over what to post...Did you read my whole post? I will repost it at the bottom of this letter...I gave another e-mail list to anyone who wants to chat about anything. It is on Rootsweb and is not entirely a genealogy list. I also said to put the word STORIES in the SUBJECT area that way anyone who did not want to open their email can DELETE it without reading it. I STILL see nothing wrong with telling stories about our ancetors from Campbell Co. I also have found many relatives on this list. Cousin Neal being one. We all appreciate the help we get from one another and really good information is put on this list. People here are always willing to help. I could tell a story about my Grandpa HENRY WARD. He was born in Campbell Co. As a little girl I would watch him drink his coffee. I lived with my aunt, uncle and Grandpa Ward after my mother died in 1949. He was always old as I remember him. He was 86 when he died in 1961 and I was 20. He chewed some kind of twisted tobacco...but back to his coffee. He would put a mound of sugar on his saucer, he always had a saucer, then he would pour some coffee on the sugar and then drag a biscuit through it. Sometimes he even gave me some. He would pick up his cup and saucer and they would clang clang clang together cause his feeble hands shook. Then he would pour some coffee in his saucer and slurp...I sure wish I could hear those noises again. He was a little bent over but at one time I guess he was almost 6 ft tall. I have a picture of him beside my father JAMES HENRY WARD and he was 6 ft. He also talked funny or said words different. He said pint for point--jint for joint and pison for poison. I always wondered where the words came from????Does anyone know??? When anyone came to visit him he was always on the porch in the summer and had his Bible in his hands. He would quote many a verse and no one complained. I have been given the Bible and it has many passages underlined....I began asking him questions about his parents and wished I had asked more....When he died he lived in Anderson County in Carroll Hollow. Dear Grandpa I miss you.... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is my post from 3-17 I have had one complaint about OLD STORIES. I see nothing wrong with posting them as long as they are from Campbell Co. After all it is part of history and genealogy. But everyone please don't send forwards or jokes. I know many would like to read the stories and many may not. So here is my suggestion....on the SUBJECT line make sure you write Old Stories- Campbell Co. That way to those that do not wish to read it can DELETE without having to open the email. Hopefully everyone can be happy....If that don't work you can join my chatter list where we do tell stories sometimes... Just send a letter to email:Down-Home-Chatter-request@rootsweb.com then when you want to post email:Down-Home-Chatter@rootsweb.com Milly WARD Piros My Mind Is Like Lightning....One Brilliant Flash and Poooffffffffffffffffff, It's Gone **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. I must add my "silent" voice to this discussion, and wholeheartedly agree with Maria. I live in Campbell County and all of my husband's roots are here, mine are in Hancock and Claiborne Counties and also in VA and KY. We find clues to many unknown facts about our families in stories of other families, just as Maria said. In most pension packets from the Civil War, are found depositions from neighbors, relatives and friends telling many things about most of the families in the neighborhood, and it has been my experience to find a gr.gr.grandfather's packet that was over 300 pages, and just from the depositions and stories of the above stated persons, I learned more about his early life than was ever known in our family. This happens not only in pension papers, but also the letters, remembered and passed down conversations, etc. In my opinion, I think Milly's suggestion that the subject line be "Family Story," and maybe adding a surname or two, would not cause any problem at all for me. I, and probably many others, have unsolved mysteries that could possibly be resolved by these shared stories. You never know from where or whom the next clue will come. I cannot speak for anyone else on our list, but the delete key is under your finger, and if one does not want to read the "Family Story," when they see it in the subject line, just hit delete. Libby Bunch Smiddy I hear their whispers...ethereal, soft and still. Daughter, if you do not remember us, who will?
Forklore is what it says folklore. There can be no assurance that the stories contain factual information. These stories have a place in our own genealogy records and books, but I do not believe they should be passed on the genealogy list. We all strive to make sure that we pass on only documented information. Stories, folklore cannot be documented. Also once a door is opened, folklore, stories, become many other things like jokes, Aunt Jane's odd personality, the chicken that killed the snake and many, many other items. Haint a nary one of youes that can 'pute that. Doyle King kingdek@gmail.com
For those of us living far away these stories etc give us a sense of the places and times we don't know. Far away in Southern California researching Gray, Clepper and Heatherly, Campbell County families. The story about the coffee was plainly marked STORIES. If anyone chooses not to read the contents of a Story posted here....there is a simple solution. Press DELETE and it is gone. There are some who might enjoy them and of course some who might not. Rather than anyone getting their knickers in a twist, if everyone adheres to the instructions of posting the subject line as STORY then no one has to read it if they chose not to. AND EVERYONE IS HAPPY...Happy hunting to all. No need for conflict when the solution is right in front of our noses. **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. It is often through the sharing of a story that we find other relations or that we hold the key to another families mysteries. An example, my roots like mainly here in Campbell County, TN and from Scott & Russell Counties in VA. My Chapman and Fraley lines married into many other family lines. During the Civil War a Chapman soldier wrote home to his Dad, siblings, cousins, other family and friends. There's a huge collection of these letters in the archives out there in TN. But the letters do not pertain solely to the Chapman line. They talk about the local elections going on back home in Campbell County, the well wishes from neighbors (who are mentioned by name). Who was sick, who was having a good crop, and so much more. To not be able to share these stories with other researchers seeking to learn more about life in Campbell County or seeking a particular family line would be to lose a vital part of why the list exists. For folks just starting out, joining a county list vs. a specific family list is their hopes of learning more from others who my share the family line in a secondary manner. Leads come from many avenues... I've been a member on this list for many years and considering the relatively low volume we have right now, I can't see these stories being a huge inconvenience. There is no reason that the stories cannot be posted on more than one list - where ever they happen to be applicable. The county site is most certainly in that category of acceptable postings. *This is my silent voice speaking out.... Thank you! Maria

I have information on two John Adkins. 1. The one who was married to Mary Sanders. Daughters that I have listed for this couple are Saleitha b. 9-10-1826. She married Elisha Huckaby 11-26-1847 and she died 2-4-1910, and is buried in the Turley Cemetery, Caryville, Tennessee. Another daughter that I have for this couple is Sterling Adkins b. 1833 and died in 1905. He married Motlaney Lowe before 1862. 2. John Tyler Adkins b. 1841 married Barbara Mary Jane Dunkin on 1-1-1860 in Campbell County, Tn. He died 8-10-1905. Barbara Mary Jane was the daughter of Newberry Dunkin and Winifred Brickey. I wish I could be of more assistance on this one. The majority of my Adkins information is in relationship to how they tie into my Wilson and Dunkin/Duncan, Harmon, and Hatmaker lines. Milly, Best I can remember, there were 2 John Adkins. One was John (some say middle name Stanton but I haven't seen proof of that) Adkins married to a bevy of beauties (Mary Choate, Mary Shoate, Saunders, Mary Sowders, Mary Sanders, Polly Huckaby, and a few others that I've seen, which I think can be narrowed down to maybe two or three women). The other was John Adkins that I believe was married to an America. As for John Stanton Adkins, I have never seen a child by the name of Jemima listed for him. I haven't delved into the other John too much, but I believe Debbie Wilson Fehr might can help you with that. So...if you are out there Debbie...shed some light on this subject!!! You guys take care. It sure is a soggy day. I'm glad I'm snug as a bug in front of my computer playing ALL DAY even though there is lots of laundry and dishes and dusting and... and... and..... Does anyone have the Supreme Court rulling on the case of Jacob Harness and Isaac White? In 1876 or 1877 the Supreme Court (I assume this is the TN court not the U.S.) ruled that Jacob should be hanged for Ike's murder. Just being nosey and would like to read what they said back then.
