Dear Cora: None of my cemetery books show a Jane Carroll buried anywhere. Actually, that is not entirely true. She is not buried in the mountains. I am looking at Volume 4 of my set and that is the one that has all the cemeteries over Peabody Mtn. There are three more in the set that show all the ones up the valley, in town, down around Jacksboro, Caryville, Stony Fork, etc., so she could possibly be buried somewhere else. Several of our relatives from "over the Mtn." are buried at Woodlawn, here in LaFollette. So that is not beyond the realm of possibility. I see several James Carrolls in different cemeteries, but not one Jane. Could she have been buried under any other last name than Carroll? Or in another cemetery in a different part of Campbell County? Hi Evelyn: The James Branam you are talking about was James M. Branam. He was the son of Jonathan and Sarah Lowe Branam. Sarah Lowe was the daughter of Fielding Lowe. Jonathan is buried at the old Lowe Cemetery on Stinking Creek and Sarah is buried over at the old Ayers Cemetery on Hickory Creek. You have his wife and all the dates as I do, except I have them married in July and you have Sept., but I do have a note saying Sept., with a question mark beside it, so you may be right. I don't remember where I got the Sept. date. James M. and wife Mary Ann Wilburn Branam's son, Jonathan "Babe" Branam was our gr.gr.grandfather. Their son, John Franklin "Johnny" Branam married Nancy Emma Ridenour. They had a daughter, Amanda Belle Branam, who married our grandfather, Sampson Dewey Smiddy. I'll "try" to figure out the Nancy Ayers. I am sure I have her in my Ayers line somewhere. You are right, that line will "drive you crazy." They named everybody the same name, and it is horribly confusing without going by dates and census records. Yep!! You are right. I remember going to visit Uncle Delas and Aunt Clay as a child and they had an old tub they kept of water on the porch with a metal dipper for when they got thirsty and were working in their garden. I remember 'just being so thirsty' that I had to have a drink of it. It was a novelty. I remember Aunt Clay being very loving and sweet. When I was young I had very very long hair...I could sit on it. Uncle Dave was visiting my Aunt Lorene Robbins at her house in Clinton (the only time I know of him to do so because he didn't go very many places that I know of). He only had one eye (I think due to a mining accident, but I'm not totally sure of that) and he couldn't see very good out of that one eye. They explained to him who I was and he told me to come over to him. I walked over to him and sat down and he took his hands and put them on my head and then felt my face, like a blind person. I just sort of sat there, kind of uncomfortable because I knew he was an uncle, but didn't really know him. He turned to my granny (Esther Mae Sharp Harness Johnson) and told her, "She looks just like you as a child, sister." The funny thing is, if I had a picture to show you guys of her as a child (there was one of her sitting on a moon that was taken at a fair when she was 10 or so), I did look exactly like her! Uncle Dave had 2 sons, Rob and Fred, that I think came from his first wife, that my grandmother helped raise for a while. His funeral was the first I had every been too (it was at Cox's Funeral Home in Lake City) and I remember being sad that he had died. Funny how just a name will spark a memory! Jennifer, according to my files: Delas Sharp married Lucy Clay Duncan... Lee W. Sharp married Tennie Day David Sharp married Luzetta Tindell and Stella (unknown last name) In a message dated 3/21/2008 2:16:26 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, JennH13@aol.com writes: My Great-grandmother, Martha Jane Stansberry/Stansbury (both spellings have been used) was the daughter of William Stansbury (a veteran of the union army and member of Longfield Baptist Church) and his wife Elizabeth Reed (referred to as Betty Elizabeth by my Granny, Esther Sharp Harness Johnson). Elizabeth was the daughter of Rev. John "Sonny" Reed who had started and pastored a number of churches in the Campbell and Anderson County areas. Martha Jane was born 5-6-1864 in Campbell County. She met and courted Isaac Peter Sharp and he asked for her hand in marriage. William, Martha's father, told him no (I was never given a reason as to why). So Isaac and Martha snuck out one night in 1881 (not sure of the exact date) and went to Anderson County to be married. Isaac would later tell his kids that Martha was the 'only piece of meat I ever stole'. They loved each other a great deal and together had 7 children: Lee <married to Tennie LNU>, Sammy (died at birth), Alice <wife of John Massengale>, Bertha (pronounced Berth-ee) <wife of John Day>, Delas <husband to Clay LNU>, Dave <had 2 wives, not sure of names>, and Esther <wife of James Earl Harness Sr. and Hugh 'Hudy' Johnson>. They all farmed the land together. During the early part of 1919, Martha suffered from a lot of pain with her teeth. She finally decided to submit to going to a dentist and had all of her teeth pulled. This caused her a lot of pain and probably also caused a lot of infection. Shortly after having her teeth pulled she took to her bed. On Feb. 3rd, she requested that her youngest daughter, Esther, bring her a dish of peaches with cream, claiming that she was the hungriest she'd ever been. This was her last meal as she passed way sometime during the night on Feb. 4, 1919. Her husband, Isaac, was filled with grief, as were the children, especially her youngest, Esther who said she 'felt empty after the death of my mama.' However, if you look at the census records for 1920 Campbell County, you will find Martha listed as living with her husband, Isaac, and daughter, Esther <called Easter>. Apparently, Isaac could not deal with the fact that his wife was dead and he must have reported her as living to the census record. Isaac died 6 years later in 1926 and was known to be senile. Perhaps his senility had started by the time his wife died. Note: Once, my Granny took me to Norris Dam and we walked along the dam, out to the very middle. She pointed to the tallest tree to the left of the lake and told me that was her favorite tree and the tree she had played with her dolls under. Apparently a good portion of the lake near the dam is the site of her farm. I'm sure that tree would be hard to pick out now though. Hello Deb and Donna Deb and I are connected through the same line, her grandmother Daisy and my grandmother Pearl Reed are sisters. My Grandma Pearl told me that they had a brother Howard "Hooper" Reed, and he could see things, (ghostly things all the time) he used to scare them to death. But I have been to the Macedonia Graveyard many times and for some reason it is spooky to me. My Grandmother Pearl said that the men were outside the church gathered talking and whatnot there was a dog that appeared and one of the mean tried to get it to go away, and said something like I am going to kick you for a somerset if you don't go on, well the dog did not go and Howard Hooper said you won't kick that dog for a somerset, so the man kicked and his foot went right through the dog. It was a ghost, there is a picture on Mary Jane Lindsey Reed's stone and me and my Grandma Pearl, she is dead now but she looked so lonely and pitiful in that picture. It was very haunting to look at. Another happening in the same area, some of my Chapman family went fishing beyond the grave yard, and when they came up something grabbed one of the female's leg and it wasn't a weed either, which scared her. Another one coming from the graveyard back into town, a Chapman family member and her son had gone back to the same fishing hold, and on the way back through the Pinecrest area, it was dusk, they both spotted a little girl I think she said about 11 yrs old in her gown , they thought it kind of odd at dusk and that mist comes around ghost ,because I have seen them myself, laugh if you want to, the mother said to the son that was driving did you see that and he said yes, and they looked back and it was no more...gone. I agree with Maria Edwards, we have worked on the Chapman Line with several others for about 6 years. We have documentation, really aren't folklore, we have pensions, we have the letters that she mentioned that do talk about those in the neighborhood and how that they were doing. The happenings back at home. I believe that it could be useful. Charlsie Gatlin FL

Hi Cora: Most of our relative are buried at the Hall. We were up there just yesterday (Easter Sunday), to bury our Aunt Almedia Bolton Smiddy. It was snowing a little and so cold. It seems like there is not any other place that is colder in the winter, or hotter in the summer, than the Hall Cemetery!! Probably just because we are usually mowing and weed-eating in the summer! My question is about your Morning Wilburn Carroll. Our 4X gr.grandfather, Jonathan "Babe" Branam, who is also buried at the Hall, was said to have been married to a lady by that same name, after his first wife died. Was your Morning ever married to anyone other than Morton Carroll, Jr.? Thank you for the comments on the condition of the Hall Cemetery. Bobby and I used to try to mow it on our own, but it is too much for one couple. Several of the families mow their own areas, so it is easier on us and other who also mow up there to try and get the whole thing done. The reason I put up the stake at that one place was that I, myself, fell into that hole and almost broke a leg. I don’t even want to think what my foot was resting on, since my entire leg was down there!! Also, I got covered with ants that came pouring out, when I fell in. I knew someone else would do the same thing, so I put up that stake to try and warn them. An elderly person could easily break a leg or hip doing that. Thankfully, I am not to that point yet, so I just had a few bruises, but I got out of that hole FAST! LOL I would be very interested to know more about your Morning Carroll. I have no idea exactly how many times Papaw Babe Branam was married, and it could have been to another lady by the same name, but I would like to find the truth of that marriage, and which Morning Wilburn Carroll was. By the way, I have seen it spelled "Mourning" also. Hey guys I know exactly where feilding lowe is burried. I have a few photos of his grave and don't mind emailing them. It no longer has his name on the grave but at some point I am sure it did, because it is in one of the old cememtery books of Campbell County. Also, if you read the book "Land of the Lake" by Dr. Ridenour it has many details about fielding, and describes his grave so I am positive it is his. I don't mind sharing photos, and/or showing anyone where his grave is. just email me. Hi Jan, in checking through my record book on our Carrolls I find only one marriage concerning the Reynolds. It is Julia Reynolds married to Lewis Carroll. In the 1900 Census of Campbell County,Tenn I find a Benjamin Reynolds. If you have a copy look on page 197 thru200 in that area you will find a lot of Carrolls and family surnames. The marriage of Julia and Lewis I have more information somewhere and will have to hunt it and e-mail you back. Hope this little dab is a help. Hi Gene: Thank you for that information. I thought it strange that Pine Mountain post office went to Pinemountain. Thanks for letting us know why.
