Smith Jr., 78, of Clinton, Betty Lou Pogue, 77, of Oak Ridge, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Paul Rudolph Kasten, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at his home. Born Dec. 10, 1923, in Jackson, Mo., he was the son of Arthur and Hattie Kruger Kasten. Mr. Kasten graduated from Rolla University in Missouri with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in chemical engineering. He also earned a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Kasten served in the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific during World War II. He came to Oak Ridge in 1950 to begin working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked on reactor programs nationally and internationally, including work in Taiwan, China, Brazil and India. His family said he especially enjoyed his work with the German reactor program. According to his family, Mr. Kasten also enjoyed playing the piano, gardening and playing tennis. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Kasten and Albert Kasten. Mr. Kasten is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eileen Kiehne Kasten; his son, Kim Kasten and wife, RaNaye, of Oak Ridge; two daughters, Susan Goebbert and husband, Bob, of Hunsdale, Ill., and Jennifer Kasten of Knoxville; his sister, Mildred Wallace, of Oak Ridge; three grandchildren, Brad Goebbert and wife, Amy, of Downers Grove, Ill., Heather Freet and husband, Bruce, of Plymouth, Ind., and Brandon Goebbert of Hunsdale; and by two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Freet and Melanie Freet, both of Plymouth. The funeral will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Evers officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Howard Lee Smith, 85, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and formerly of Oliver Springs, died Monday, March 1, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 1, 1918, in Anderson County, he was the son of Albert Lee Smith and Carrie Elizabeth Price Smith. Mr. Smith lived in Oliver Springs before moving to Daytona Beach in 2003. He was a member of Solway Baptist Church. Mr. Smith retired from Union Carbide working at the Oak Ridge K-25 site, the Y-12 Plant, and X-10. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Edna Mae Smith; two brothers, Jay Allen Smith and Carl Boyd Smith; and by two sisters, Beulah Smith Sisson and Mable Smith Wilson. Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Robert L. Ogle, 82, of Clinton, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Terry Reich Moore, 52, of Knoxville, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 18, 1951, in Chattanooga. Mr. Moore graduated from East Brainerd High School and played pitcher for his baseball team. He attended the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He was employed at Trotter Buick in Chattanooga as parts manager for 15 years. In 1988, Mr. Moore moved to Knoxville and married Becky Minturn of Oak Ridge. In 1990, he started a mail order hobby shop business named Boat South that specialized in remote control boats and parts. He designed, built and raced boats, as well as sold parts. He also took his hobby shop to regional boat races to sell parts needed for the boats. Boat South had customers around the world in Australia, France, Canada and others along the United States. His family said he was very successful and well known in the boating industry and community. In 1997, Mr. Moore and his wife adopted their only son, Casey Khang from Vietnam. His family said his greatest joy and passion was spending time with his son. According to his family, Mr. Moore had loads of fun teaching his son math, reading, chess, cards and other interests. His family said every weekend they would take his vista cruiser boat on the lake, go fishing, have bon fires, swim, eat and meet and make new friends. Mr. Moore also enjoyed bass fishing, taking his son to Orlando, Fla., and spending time with his friends and family, his family said. In addition to his wife and 7-year-old son, Mr. Moore is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Jean Moore; two sisters, Debbie Steele and husband, Joe, and Diane Clibrey; and his brother Kenny Moore, all of Chattanooga. >From the Knoxville News Sentinel 2 Mar 2004 COKER, VERLDON EDWARD - age 85, of Oliver Springs, FORGETY, DONALD A. age 69, of Andersonville, MARTIN, MARY KATHERYN - age 73, of Clinton, MONEYMAKER, JAMES CRAIG age 47 of Solway, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ COKER, VERLDON EDWARD - age 85, of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born February, 22, 1919 in Charley's Branch, Tennessee, to the late William Lewis and Belle Cross Coker. In addition to his patents he was also preceded by: a brother, Earl Coker; a sister, Mavia Leach; and by a granddaughter, Catherine Brown, and by a son-in-law, Vann Kelly. He was a lifelong resident of this area and a member of Free Communion Baptist Church in Anderson County, however he attended the First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. He was a 50 year member of Black Diamond Masonic Lodge # 625 F. & A.M. in Petros, Tennessee and a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite and Kerbella Shrine Temple of Knoxville. Mr. Coker operated an Esso Service Station in Oliver Springs in the early 1940's. He was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the Pacific Theater. He operated Coker Bus Line in the early 1940's which transported workers to Oak Ridge for the Manhattan Project. In 1951 he helped establish Walls and Coker Trucking Company, Inc. He was also instrumental in other various mining and coal related projects spanning over 35 years prior to his retirement. He was involved in local real estate development and served as an Oliver Springs City Councilman and in other civic projects. A native of New York, N.Y., Dr. Binder was the son of David and Elizabeth Appleberg Binder. He was educated in the public schools in New York and graduated with a bachelor's degree from City College in New York. He earned his master's degree and doctorate from Yale University. A veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II, he was a nuclear physicist in Oak Ridge for several years and then became seminar scientist for the Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif. He was Jewish. Dr. Binder was a member of the American Physicist Society, IEEE, Manuscript Society, and an avid chess player with many trophies. He was also an avid bridge player and an amateur architect. Dr. Binder is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise Meadows Binder; three aunts, Etta Seigel, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Rose Fuqua and Ruby Meadows, of Gainesboro; a cousin, Laura Movhine, of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Nellie Meadows, of Florida; sisters-in-law, Margaret Sue Jones, of Norcross Ga., Ann Bray, of Sparta; a brother-in-law, John Meadows, of New Mexico; and by several nieces and nephews. Verldon Edward Coker, 85, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Feb. 22, 1919, in Charley's Branch, he was the son of William Lewis and Belle Cross Coker. Mr. Coker was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a member of Free Communion Baptist Church in Anderson County and attended First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. He was a 50-year member of Black Diamond Masonic Lodge No. 625, F&AM in Petros, and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite and Kerbella Shrine Temple in Knoxville. He operated an Esso Service Station in Oliver Springs in the early 1940s. Mr. Coker was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the Pacific Theater. He operated Coker Bus Line in the early 1940s, which transported workers to Oak Ridge for the Manhattan Project. In 1951, Mr. Coker helped establish Walls and Coker Trucking Co. Inc. He was also instrumental in other various mining and coal-related projects spanning over 35 years prior to his retirement. He was involved in local real estate development and served on the Oliver Springs City Council and in other civic projects. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Coker; a sister, Mavia Leach; and by a granddaughter, Catherine Brown. Esther Irene Thomas Shuey died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at her home. Born Dec. 5, 1914, in Paintsville, Ky., she was the daughter of Richard Collins and Mary Harry Thomas. She graduated from Morehead State University as a music and English major. She met and married fellow Morehead graduate, John W. Shuey Sr. from Delphi, Ind., on Jan. 16, 1937. They later moved to Oak Ridge in 1943. Mrs. Shuey was one of Oak Ridge's first Camp Fire Girls leader in 1948 and formed the city's first Blue Bird group in 1950. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in leading the children's choir for many years. She also participated in many community events including the Oak Ridge Jaycees Follies, Oak Ridge Playhouse and performed at the Back Door Pizza Parlor to the joy of all who heard her performances, according to her family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Harriet Shuey; a son-in-law, Same E. Shell; two brothers, Wildan and Harry; three sisters, Lillian, Marianna and Marjorie; and by a special loving friend, Doris Keeton. Mrs. Shuey is survived by her children, Gwen Nuchols, Ann Thortsen, Rachel Shell and John W. Shuey Jr.; her sister, Miriam Hill; and by a long-time friend, James Keeton. Mr. Wright was born July 2, 1934 in Lake City, TN to Clarence Wright and Zona Loveday Wright. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory as an electrical engineer and he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Wright was a member of Oak Ridge Historical Society, Sertoma Club, Quarter Century Wireless Association, Elks Club, Moose Lodge, Oak Ridge Amateur Radio Club, Morgan County Radio Club and Anderson County Jail Committee. He was also a Ham Radio Operator for 52 years. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by: two brothers, William T. Wright and R.B. Wright; and a sister, Fay Wright Prichard. He was born Feb. 9, 1931 to Ernest Clinton and Cloe Burchfield Anderson in Ector, Tx. He grew up in Ector and Bohan, TX and graduated from Bonham High School. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 1951. He served as second lieutenant in the Korean War later being promoted to first lieutenant. He married Marguerite Hammett Dec. 23, 1955. He moved to Middlesboro with his family from Abilene, TX in March, 1968 to operate Mingo Mountain Coal Company. He later operated mines in Pikeville, KY and Lake City. He was a consultant with Hydrotex of Dallas, TX at the time of his death. In the past he was active in Middlesboro Little Theater, a past president of Middlesboro Chamber of Commerce and a member of Rotary. He attended St. Julian Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Marguerite; son, Robert Clinton Anderson II and wife Janine of Baku, Azerbaijan, son, John Dwain Anderson and wife Katherine and children Jonathon and Austin of LaFollette. Born Jan. 3, 1932, in Bemis, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Margaret Osborn McDugal. Mrs. Lieber owned and operated Fran's Yarn Barn for many years. She was an Episcopalian and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 390, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1684 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. According to her family, she enjoyed community activities and worked on several benefit fund-raisers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Freddy Stewart, in 2003. Mrs. Lieber is survived by her husband of 19 years, Lyle Frank Lieber; two daughters, Jacquelyn Skidmore and husband, Bill, of Madisonville and Phyllis Wilson of Erin; three stepdaughters, Linn Silverman of Homestead, Fla., Dana Gambill of Lexington, Ky., and Jill Hulker of Redmond, Wash.; and by her sister, Helen Finnegan of San Marcos, Calif. She is survived by her grandson, Kevin McClure; five stepgrandchildren, Kelly Wilshere, Marni Mutrus, Brian Silverman, Amy Silverman and Max Hulker; two great-grandchildren, Danielle McClure and Taylor McClure; and by her stepgreat-grandchild, Madison Beatte. "DICK" - age 62, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at his home, with his wife, Lynn by his side. after a long, valiant battle with cancer. He began work at the Oak Ridge Y-12 National Security Complex in 1965, following a stint in the US Air Force and undergraduate training in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee. During his 37 years tenure at Y-12, he rose to Senior Staff Engineer and Deputy Manager of the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Dept. Over the years, he gained many friends in the nuclear criticality safety community, both locally and nationally. He was highly regarded and respected by his peers. Mr. Handley would frequently recount stories to younger engineers about the 'old days' in Oak Ridge. As a young engineer himself in the mid-1960's, he regarded Dr. E. "Charlie" Crume as his mentor and would consult with him through out his career. He 'grew up' in the nuclear field with Messieurs Howard Dyer, Calvin Hopper and Richard Taylor, all of whom he regarded as friends and well respected colleagues. In more recent years, he served as the senior engineer and mentor to beginning nuclear critical safety engineers in the Y-12 NCS Department. He was especially proud of the accomplishments of Ms. Susan Turner and took great delight in watching the professional maturity and achievements of Mr. Allan Krass (ORNL). He always provided thoughtful and helpful insight into nuclear criticality safety issues, both to beginning and senior level engineers. In recent years, he and his good friend, Dr. Kenneth Lewis, often held many fruitful discussions about nuclear projects of major impact to Y-12 and to the nation. His chief concern was always the safety of fissile material workers and operations and he invariably staunchly defended this position through out his career. He was a great asset to the Y-12 National Security Complex and to the Nuclear Criticality Safety community as a whole and will be greatly missed. Clement, 81, of Oliver Springs, Minnie Lee Smith Frederick, 99, of Oak Ridge, Gary Handley, 62, of Oak Ridge, Frances Lieber, 72, of Oak Ridge, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Elisabeth Fuchs Bunch, 74, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at her home in Columbus, Ohio. Born Feb. 11, 1930, in Freyung, Germany, she was the daughter of Max Fuchs and Anna Thuringer. She grew up in Munich, helping to take care of her five siblings while enduring the hardships of World War II. After the war, she married a U.S. serviceman, Richard A. Bunch of Devonia. Sgt. Bunch's military assignments took the family to army bases in Germany, Texas and Virginia. Mrs. Bunch first moved to the United States in 1953. She was awarded her U.S. citizenship in 1973. Mrs. Bunch moved to Oliver Springs in 1966. She worked for several years in the cafeterias at Donovan Elementary School, Norwood Elementary School and Norwood Junior High School, where her family said she was affectionately called "The Lunch Lady." Her family said she also was known fondly as the "Eating Teacher" and the "Manner Teacher" for her advice to students. Mrs. Bunch was involved in the Oliver Springs chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as a Worthy Matron. In 1983, she and her husband returned to San Antonio, Texas, where her husband had been stationed while in the Army. Her husband died in 2001 and she moved to Columbus to be closer to her daughter and two grandchildren. Mrs. Bunch is survived by two sons, Richard F. Bunch and wife, Amy, of Lugoff, S.C., and Alvin G. Bunch and wife, Ann Kirkwood, of Meridian, Idaho; and by her daughter, Heidi A. Bunch D.D.S. and husband, Ken Hester, of Gahanna, Ohio. She is also survived by five granddaughters, Katie Bunch of Lugoff, Caitlin Hester and Olivia Hester, both of Gahanna, Jessi Bunch of Los Angeles, Calif., and Charlotte Bunch of Meridian; two brothers, Paul Fuchs and wife, Hermine, of Hauzenberg, Germany, and Otto Fuchs and wife, Edie, of Rochester, N.Y.; and by four special friends, Erna and Leonard Boggess of Ohio and Sonny and Louise Fairchild of Oliver Springs. Private family services are planned for a later date in San Antonio. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to a charity of the donor's choice. Schoedinger Funeral Home in Columbus, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements. Alma Slone Carver, 80, of Clinton, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Oct. 23, 1923, in Holly Bush, Ky., she was the daughter of Camillus and Laura Slone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, P.M. Carver. Mrs. Carver is survived by her daughter, Sandra Stepp and husband, David, of Clinton; two sons, Randy Carver and wife, Deanie, and Richard Carver, all of Knoxville; and by his granddaughter, Tonya Stepp of Clinton. She is also survived by three sisters, Ida Ingram of Jefferson City and Verbena Thomas and Alpha Williams, both of Hindman, Ky.; two brothers, Mason Slone and Okie Slone, both of Jefferson City; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with the Rev. Mickey Leffew officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Lois Elaine Dennis, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Continuum Courtyards of Oak Ridge. Born Dec. 17, 1915, in Michigan, she was the daughter of William and Frida Kent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude B. Dennis, and by a grandson, Michael C. Dennis. Mrs. Dennis is survived by her son, B.L. Dennis; two sisters, Memorie Jean Peterson of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Joan Thomas of Michigan; her brother, Clifford Kent of Montague, Mich.; three grandchildren, Lorie Dew of Knoxville, Lisa Henson of Clinton and Mark Dennis of Panama City, Fla.; and by several great-grandchildren. A graveside service was to be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. Woodhaven Funeral Home in Claxton is in charge of arrangements. Berlyn J. "B.J." Lard, 94, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at his residence. Born March 22, 1909, in Waterloo, Ala., he was the son of John Robert and Mamie Alice Webb Lard. Mr. Lard was a Baptist. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 102 in Savannah. He retired from Union Carbide after 29 years of service as a maintenance mechanic. His family said he enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Colonel Lard, Robert Lard, Hubert Lard and Ray Lard, and by one sister, Roma Dee Lard. Mr. Lard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Malisia C. Lard; three sons, Keith A. Lard and wife, Sharon, of Cape Canaveral, Fla., Kenneth L. Lard and wife, Rosa Lee, of Cleveland, and Gary C. Lard of Oak Ridge; and by seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers Onus Lard, Edwin Lard and Calvin Lard, and two sisters, Georgia L. Ballanger and Netti B. Hidman, all of Arkansas. Rebbecca Arwood, Diana Bridges and Patty Fritts are considered special care givers. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, James Willard and Jessie May Shepherd; a brother, Mickey Shepherd; and by a sister, Forest Lynn Shepherd.
