Hello List: I got this info from a cousin and checked the info out at ancestry and IT IS TRUE! They are starting a OneWorldTree service that will cost 40 dollars a year (if you are a subscriber). If you've uploaded your family tree previously when it was a free service, and that tree meets their criteria, it will become a part of their PAID service and you get nothing. Here's what they said: "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004." and here's the link: http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/checklist.aspx So if you don't want your family information to be a part of this OneWorldTree thing, you'll have to delete your file. He was a scientist, research administrator, educator and professional leader. Dr. Auerbach was widely recognized for his scientific creativity in pioneering the use of radioisotope tracers and ionizing radiation to quantify the functional processes of ecological systems. He was a principal force in the development of ecology as a quantitative and applied science. Dr. Auerbach established the internationally renowned ecology program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and helped found the graduate program in ecology at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Auerbach was born May 21, 1921, in Chicago, Ill. As a boy, he worked in his family's movie theater. His family lived in Chicago until his parents' deaths in the 1950s. In 1942, Auerbach enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in World War II as a second lieutenant until 1944. In 1946, he earned a bachelor's degree in zoology and in 1947 a master's degree in zoology from the University of Illinois. In 1949, he received his doctorate in zoology from Northwestern University. Dr. Auerbach married Dawn P. Davey on June 12, 1954, in Chicago. In late 1954, Dr. Auerbach was recommended and hired to be ORNL's first full-time ecologist. At ORNL, Dr. Auerbach served as chief of the Radiation Ecology Section in the Health Physics Division where he established the laboratory's ecological program and then directed the present Environmental Sciences Division from its inception in 1972 until he retired in 1986. Dr. Auerbach has conducted research in ecosystem analysis and radioactive waste cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. He has served as an educator in biology and ecology at Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, the University of Tennessee and the University of Georgia. Dr. Auerbach has been a member of the Commission of Natural Resources, the Board on Energy Studies and served on or chaired various other committees of the National Academy of Sciences. He served as chairman of the NAS/NRC Environmental Studies Board from 1983 to 1985. Dr. Auerbach was a member of the executive committee of the Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He received the Distinguished Associate Award of the U.S. Department of Energy in 1986. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was a president of the Ecological Society of America and the recipient of its Distinguished Service Citation. He served on the NSF LTER proposal review panel and the NSF blue ribbon multidisciplinary selection panel for Science and Technology Centers and was the ecology editor for the journals, Environmental and Experimental Botany and Environment International. Dr. Auerbach began his career at ORNL as a scientist in the Health Physics Division from 1954 until 1959. He was promoted to chief, Radiation Ecology Section, Health Physics Division in 1959 until 1970 at ORNL. Dr. Auerbach was appointed adjunct professor, graduate program in ecology at UT in 1965 and served until 1986. In 1970 to 1972, he became the director of the newly created Ecological Sciences Division at ORNL. From 1972 to 1986, he served as director of the Environmental Sciences Division at ORNL. In 1986, he retired from ORNL as founding director of the Environmental Sciences Division. Dr. Auerbach was the recipient of many professional awards and recognition, including: president, International Union of Radioecology (1985-1988); Commander's Award for Public Service, U.S. Army (1990); distinguished associate, U.S. Dept. of Energy (1986); Distinguished Service Award, Ecological Society of America (1985); President's Special Committee on Health and Environmental Effects (1977-1978); president of the Ecological Society of America (1971-1972); visiting research professor of ecology, University Georgia, Athens, Ga., (1964-1986); fellow of the American Association of Science (1960-2004); and director, Forest Biome, International Biology Program, National Science Foundation (1968-1976). According to his family, his proudest accomplishment was the hundreds of scientists, across several generations that he trained and who are today scientific leaders in ecology across the country. His family said he also took an active interest in many Oak Ridge civic activities and was a member, and served on the board of directors, of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge. In addition to his career, his family said he enjoyed collecting Lionel trains and rare coins. He loved spending time outdoors, appreciating the grand beauty of nature, as well as traveling, reading, hiking, camping, fishing, running, bird watching, touring Civil War battlefields and historical sites, walking his beloved dog Coco and spending time with his family and friends, according to his family. He was a member of the Communication Workers of America and his family said he enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Jarmolow, who survived a marriage of 56 years, only to be felled on the tennis court by a massive heart attack, is survived by his wife, Shirley, his daughters, Beth and Janet, his son-in-law, Patrick, and his grandchildren, Erica, Connor and Hanna. Mr. Jarmolow was born on a farm in Lebanon, Conn., in 1924. In 1937, at the age of 17, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps and trained as a test and fighter pilot. In 1948, using his GI Bill benefits, Mr. Jarmolow graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Immediately following graduation, he joined the Martin Marietta Corp. Mr. Jarmolow's first position with Martin Marietta was as an aeronautical engineer. In 1958, he was named chief of the research staff for the aerospace company's Baltimore Division and two years later became manager of the division's R&D activities. Following this he was appointed director of the Research Institute for Advanced Studies. He became president of Martin Marietta Energy Systems in December 1983. At this point the Jarmolows moved to Oak Ridge. The Jarmolows, who said they loved the Oak Ridge community, decided to stay there following retirement. He served on the board of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, Methodist Medical Center Foundation and Planned Parenthood of Tennessee. His family said he brought technical and analytic skills to any challenge he faced. Mr. Jarmolow had an avid and enduring interest in science, politics, medicine and music. His family said his love of music was lifelong. According to his family, as a young father, he discovered his two daughters were learning to play the piano more quickly than he; nonetheless, he persevered. Along with his own professional success he would have loved to have had an MD after his name, his family said. According to his family, they mourn the loss of the opportunity to fulfill his dream vacation, a challenging tennis match at a picturesque resort along the rocky coast of Maine ending with a twilight lobster dinner surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren. John Woodrow Edwards, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born July 25, 1921, in Franklin, N.C., he was the son of A.J. and Daisy Baldwin Edwards . Mr. Edwards was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the 8th Air Force, 25th Bomb Group in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. He married Mae Frady on April 30, 1950, and graduated from Western Carolina University in 1954. That same year he came to Oak Ridge to work as a photographer at the K-25 site and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1986. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Mr. Edwards is survived by his son, Bill Edwards and wife, Judy, of Kingston; his daughter, Shirley McCartney and husband, Rob, of Oak Ridge; nine grandchildren, Steve Edwards, Robert Edwards, Wayne Smith, John Smith, Jerry Smith, Melanie Edwards, Jennifer Scarbrough, Jacob McCartney and Caleb McCartney; three great-grandchildren; and by five sisters, Gladys Tallent, Louise Gibson, Allia Mack, DeeDee Starback and Wilma Roper. Edward Maurice "Tom" Kittrell, 94, of Kingston, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Born March 23, 1910, in Oakdale, he was the son of Halcie Wilson and Frederick Monroe Kittrell. According to his family, Mr. Kittrell was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He worked for Tennessee Valley Authority a number of years and retired from Union Carbide in 1975. He was a charter member of Andersonville Masonic Lodge and a member of First Baptist Church Kingston for 49 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Pearl Howard Kittrell; and by two brothers, Louis and Charles. Mr. Kittrell is survived by his son, Ronald Kittrell, of Oak Ridge; his granddaughter, Simone K. Wright and husband, David A. Wright, of Fort Worth, Texas; his great-grandson, Cameron A. Wright, of Fort Worth; his brother, Merle Kittrell, of Seagoville, Texas; his special friend, Cathy Taylor, of Rockwood; and his stepgrandson, Matt Smith, of Oak Ridge. Born in 1920 in Jefferson County, Mr. Smith was the oldest child of Lee and Virginia Anderson Smith. Mr. Smith served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, completing a tour in Japan during the occupation. He retired in l984 after 38 years of service with Union Carbide and Martin Marietta Energy Systems at the K-25 site. According to his family, after his retirement, Mr. Smith enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Mr. Smith was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Brandon Smith; and by four children, Brandon Smith and wife, Jean Richardson, of Palatine, Ill., Lynne Smith of Highland Heights, Ky., Stanley Smith and wife, Beth Summers Smith, of Oak Ridge and Jeffrey Smith of Claxton. Born Sept. 7, 1920, in Morganton, N.C., she was the daughter of Fred and Florence Shuping Smith. Mrs. Edwards worked for many years as a clerk at the U.S. Marine Corp. Post Exchange in Parris Island, S.C. She was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church in Port Royal, S.C., and was involved in many of the activities of the church. She came to Oak Ridge about six years ago from Beaufort, S.C., to be near her daughter. Before her health declined, her family said she enjoyed sewing and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William H. Newsom, in April 1966 and George Thomas Edwards, in September 1974. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughter, Janet Newsom Haire and husband, Marvin Jonathan Haire, of Oak Ridge; her sister, Pearl Jodoin, of Beaufort; and by two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Bondos and husband, Joseph, and Rebecca Anne Nutbrown and husband, Thomas, all of Houston, Texas. She retired from Lovemans-Miller Department Store before moving back to Alabama 25 years ago. She is survived by two brothers, Marcus Johns and wife, Frances, and Roy Waylon Johns, all of Florence; two sisters, Lucille Johns Quillen and husband, Cyrus, of Greenhill, and Joyce Johns Bowman and husband, Dave, formerly of Oak Ridge; her sister-in-law, Opal Johns, of Greenhill; and by several nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Greenhill. James Kyle Loy, 68, of Harriman, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 10, 1935, in Union County, he was the son of Andy Loy and Mattie Wilson Loy, both now deceased. He moved to Roane County early in his childhood. Mr. Loy was a retired equipment operator. He retired from construction in 1997. He was a member of Clax Gap Baptist Church and served the church as a trustee. His family said he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren, and playing practical jokes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Reba Goins, and by two brothers, Eugene Loy and Conley Loy. Mr. Loy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lillian Rose Loy; his daughter, Pat Sheldon, of Harriman; three sons, Ricky Loy and wife, Treva, the Rev. To this union were born one son, Ronald Taylor, and two daughters, Delores Taylor and Janie Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a member of True Light Baptist Church and an outstanding member of the Oak Ridge community. Her family said she was dearly loved by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Taylor Jr., on Feb. 17, 1985; her daughter, Delores; two brothers, John and Lewis; and by four sisters, Rosie, Zanobie, Alzora and Veola. Mrs. Whittenburg moved to Oak Ridge in the mid 1940s, where she has been a longtime resident. She has owned and managed commercial properties which she and her late husband, Lee R. Whittenburg, developed. Born Jan. 15, 1926, in Dadeville, Ala., she was the daughter of Dallas and Lillian Baker. She graduated in 1943 from Camp Hill High School in Alabama. Later Mrs. Whittenburg moved to Oak Ridge to work as a shipping and receiving clerk at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, where she met and later married Lee R. Whittenburg. Together they developed several Oak Ridge ventures, which included Landmark Finance and Ocean Fresh Seafood. Mrs. Whittenburg was also involved in her late husband's successful construction and development company which resulted in her many rental properties. According to her family, Mrs. Whittenburg was a loving mother and grandmother, who devoted her life to her family and friends.
