    1. KY & TN Regiments - Civil War 1862 Somerset, KY
    2. Mary Lou Hudson
    3. Defiance Democrat, Defiance, OH - Feb. 15, 1862 Somerset, Ky., January 23, 1862. I presume you are anxious to hear whether I am yet among the living. I am not only alive, but well as usual. Last Thursday evening, I was summoned to head quarters to report the condition of my branch of the Brigade. The report was satisfactory, and I got permission to accompany the Regiments that were to take up their line of march the next morning for Zolly's camp. In the morning, the following Regiments were ordered out: Col. Wolford's Cavalry, Capt. Standart's Battery and also Capt. Hewitt's, the 12th Kentucky, and 1st and 2d Tennessee. They took up their line of march at 9 o'clock; at sundown we were only five miles distant -- on Fishing Creek, and remained there until we got orders from Gen. Thomas (who was encamped about three miles on the other side of the Creek) to march forward. The men had to ford the Creek, which was about three feet deep and a very strong current. The next day Gen. Thomas ordered the following Regiments, from the Camp at Somerset, to ta! ke up the same march. When they got to the Creek, they were ordered back again. Sunday morning, they were ordered to take the same march again. I was ordered back to camp Saturday evening to order a provision train forward. At daylight Sunday, we could hear the booming of cannon. I was ready to start at nine o'clock. The sound of heavy cannonading put extra speed in Barney, and the eight miles were soon passed, although the roads were very rough, and I reached the battle field about thirty minutes after the Battle was over. Barney galloped to the spot where the body of Gen. Zollicoffer lay. His clothes were nearly all stripped off from him, and he was covered with a blanket. I dismounted and took a good look at all that was left of the man that was so much dreaded in Kentucky. He fell by the hand of Col. Fry, of the 4th Kentucky Regiment. The ball entered his left breast, from which wound the blood was slowly running. I asked a Tennessee officer, who was standing n! ear, to lend me his bowie knife; I took it, and parting the hair back of his left ear, cut off a lock, a part of which I here enclose to you. Every one around had a small piece of some of his garments. One gave me this piece of lining of his coat. Barney took a good snuff of him and we left, to see if we could not be of some use to the poor wounded sufferers. After riding a short distance I found that the wounded on our side were well taken care of. I hitched Barney and turned my attention to the poor Secesh; and they needed help -- some wanted water, some begged me to take one of my pistols and put an end to their misery. I got some help, and we put thirteen of them into an old log blacksmith shop, and laid them around as best we could, bandaged up some, bolstered up some arms and legs with leaves the men gathered. I soon got the title of Doctor; some wanted their legs and arms cut off, but I did not have my instruments with me, but told them they would be there in a ! short time. At last the Surgeon came; he was a stranger to me; the wounded still calling me Doctor, insisted on my dressing their wounds. The Surgeon was willing that I should, but I made every excuse, told them I had some of our own men to attend to. They excused me, after assisting to dress two. I took a good survey of the battle-field, and about sundown started after the retreating and pursuing armies, in company with a Tennesean. We had not gone far before we could hear the sound of Cannon again. We increased our speed until his horse nearly gave out, and I had to slacken Barney's rapid gate. Night came on, and very dark -- the cannon had ceased their glorious sound. At my friend's suggestion, we went a short distance from the road to a house, where we put up for the night. We got dinner and supper together, a mile and a half from Zolly's Winter quarters. At break of day, we were in our saddle, and passed the 4th Ohio Regiment that had marched all night. At d! aylight the music of the cannon commenced. I thought there would be a chance for some fun, but it was not for us -- the rebels had reached their fortifications before dark. The cannon the night before was endeavoring to sink their steamboat but could not reach her. The guns in the morning were throwing shells into the camp, to which they got no response. Our Gen. was soon informed that they had crossed the river during the night, and burned the boat. So our army entered their entrenchment's, where were found about 1,200 horses and mules, 500 wagons, a number of work oxen, beef cattle in abundance, 12 cannon and 6 more taken out the river, thousands of bushels of corn, flour, meat, coffee, sugar, &c. Even the private baggage of the officers was left. It was surely a rich harvest for the weary soldiers. But after a short consultation among the officers, the order was that the four mentioned Ohio Regiments, 12th Kentucky, 1st and 2d Tennessee, the Cavalry, the two Batte! ries, and Capt. Kinney's Battery, should return to Somerset. I started at 12 M. and arrived at 4 P.M., the worst road I ever saw -- the Regiment did not arrive until the next day, and nearly all worn out. As for myself, I never felt better, but with regard to my back trip, the road from the camp the battle field was strewn with broken-down wagons, broken guns, blankets, and almost every thing appertaining to an army train. When within about two miles of the battle field, you could see the poor unfortunates stretched on the sides of the road. When I arrived on the field, they had just commence burying the enemy's dead, ours were buried the day before. The field presented a different sight -- nothing was left but the bodies of the Secessionists. The day before the field was strewn with the wounded and dying soldiers, guns, blankets, knapsacks, canteens, &c. Today a part of the prisoners were brought to head quarters, among them is Zollcoffer's Lieut. Colonel. The corps! e of Gen. Zollcoffer and that also of his Colonel are now here; I understand they are to be sent to their fiends. There have been sent to this Brigade, 300 of Zollicoffer's Cavalry horses and saddles, 100 other horses and mules forteams, which will lengthen my rides for the time that they remain here. I will now have to purchase forage for about 1,800 horses and mules. The health of our Regiment is very poor -- there is not at this time over 300 men fit for duty -- many are in the hospital. Col. Bradley is endeavoring to get the Regiment sent back somewhere to recruit. Enough at present. You will hear from me again soon. Affectionately yours, H.C. Bouton.

    3. William Baird and Barbara Hatmaker where married Dec.14,1864 in Campbell Co.TN On William Baird and Barbara Hatmaker I have some question about Barbara Hatmaker,on her parents. You show her parents David Hatmaker and Martha Harmon,I have Daniel Hatmaker and Martha Harmon married Aug 18,1853 in Campbell Co.TN I have notes below about Barbara Hatmaker and who her parents are.I have her mother Delila Carver and if you look at the notes her father is either James Hatmaker or Jacob Hatmaker. Let me know what you think. In the book: "A Promise of Good Things, Longfield Baptist Church," 1831-1981 by Edith Wilson Hutton This was a list of the early members of Indian Creek Church, 1833-1850. The list was drawn from Indian Creek Church minutes dating from April 1833 to January 1850. P. 844 James Hatmaker is listed as being: Rec. Exp. 1843 P. 844 Delila Hatmaker is listed as: (wife of James Hatmaker) Rec Sept 1843 Campbell Co TN Marriages 1838-1881 transcribed by Byron & Barbara Sistler, Novemeber 1884 depicts Delila Carver to James Hatmaker. When I went to the cross index it's stated that Delila Carver m Jacob Hatmaker March 15, 1840. I believe this to me a typing error on Sistler"s part. Listed in the cross index of the Hatmaker's depicts; Delila to Jacob Hatmaker, March 15, 1840. Listed as the following marriage it depicts Jacob Hatmaker to to Polly Hatmaker, Nov 9, 1949. In the book listed above; Delilah Carver was listed as the wife of James Hatmaker. Whether it's James Buffy, I'm uncertain, but he is the only James to fit the timeline. Further research is needed on this family. If this, in fact is James Buffy, he would have divorced Delilah prior to March 14, 1846 as that's the date he married Sophia Cooper. I couldn't locate Delilah in the 1850 Anderson Co or Campbell Co Census Records but she was in the 1860 Anderson Co TN Census Records listed as: Delilah Hatmaker 53 NC Barbara 19 TN William 17 Thank You Susie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Chasteen" <kannchasteen@sbcglobal.net> To: <TNCAMPBE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 18, 2004 9:25 PM Subject: Re: [TNCAMPBE-L] William Baird and Barbary > Dennis, > > William F. 1. Re: [TNCAMPBE-L] John SMITH/SMYTH, who had five sons, Josiah, James, John, Br...
    2. My I jump in on the Smith families? I am trying to find the parents of my gggrandfather Jonathan Smith. The information I have on him is as follows--- 1. Jonathan was born in Virginia about 1793 according to the census 2. He was born in 1797 according to the death notice in paper 3. He was on Tax List, 1826 through 1838, Whitley County, Kentucky 4. He married a widow, Martha (Mattie) Hughes about 1828-1829, no record found, probably in Whitley Co., KY since both were living there. 5. Census record -1830, Whitley Co., KY; married with Mattie and her children 6, Census record - 1840, Livingston Co., Missouri, he died in this county 22/23 Dec. 1, 1884 Jonathan Smith's and Martha's children were-- 1. Mary Sophronia, born 15 March 1831, KY 2, Rebecca, born about 1833, KY 3. Martha, born about 1835, KY 4. William, born about 1837, KY 5. Sarah Ann, born 1 Jan 1838, KY 6. Jemima, died young, was on 1840 census but not on 1850 census Martha Hughes' (Jonathan's wife) maiden name was supposed to be Chitwood. I haven't found documents proving this. Her first husband was an Isaac Hughes, according to family members. No proof. They were living in Campbell Co., KY when their first child was born. Isaac died just before or just after the twins were born, according to info from family. Their children were-- 1. Elizabeth, born 26 Nov. 1812, Campbell Co. KY, married Jeremiah Harmon on 28 Apr. 1833 in Campbell Co., KY 2. Andrew Jackson, born about 1815 in TN, married Jane Meadows 3. James 4. John born about 1819 5. Francis Marion, born 10 June 1827, KY 6. Milton, born 10 June 1827, KY They all moved to Missouri with Jonathan and Martha. My line is through both the Hughes and Smith families. I would like to connect Jonathan Smith to the Smith families in Washington Co., TN or Knox Co., KY. I have found information that John Smith, born about 1765, owned land in Knox Co., now Whitley Co., KY in 1813. His wife was Jemima Grimes, married 7 Feb. 1788, Washington Co., TN. My Jonathan named a daughter Jemima. Also, Brooks Smith, born about 1766, married Rebecca Daniels on 3 Dec. 1788, Washington Co., TN. Jonathan named a daughter Rebecca. Both marriage dates would fit for my Jonathan, born in 1793 or 1797. I would appreciate any information you might have. Thank you in advance. Mary

    1. Samuel Cowan/Mary Walker Bible
    2. Leslie Collier
    3. Don't believe that I've ever gotten around to posting this to the Campbell Co. list, so here it is. Note that Samuel Cowan was married to a Mary Walker ... she already the widow of a Mr. Rogers, 2 of whose children (Hiram and Lawson Rogers) were raised with the children she had by Samuel Cowan. See also that someone's granny died in the household of Samuel Cowan in 1819. This was an Amy Kellum, b. 1739. Given the styling of the other female names, this was possibly a widowed Mrs. Amy Kellum. From a typed transcript of the Samuel Cowan Bible taken from the files of Elizabeth Kincaid Teasley of Denton, TX (in 1997, although the letter which gave this Bible info was written in 1957, and the transcript of this Bible was made in 1966). Records from the Family Bible of Samuel Cowan Now (1957) in possession of Thomas Allison Riegel, 2004 Sunnyside, Lansing Michigan, who is a great-great-great grandson of Samuel Cowan. The flyleaf or Title Page of this Bible is missing but the Title Page, preceding the New Testament opposite Page 834, shows that the Bible was Printed and Published by M. Carey, No. 121,Mt Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, in 1815. On one of the back boards is written: " Samuel Cowan his Book price $5 Bought at knoxville January 25 181_ (illegible) " On the margin of page 681 is written "Samuel Cowans Book Price $5.00" At the top edge of the Bible there is an oval cut-out spot 1 1/2 inches across and 1 inch deep. Family tradition says that someone reading the Bible by candlelight went to sleep and the candle burned through the edge of the Bible. The page containing Marriages on one side and births on the other side has been torn and patched together again with scotch tape. Generally speaking, the writing is quite legible but in certain spots the ink is beginning to fade. This is the only Bible I have ever seen ,there the dates of the children's marriages are stated but the names of their husbands and/or wives are not mentioned. "Marriages: Samuel Cowan was married November the The 5 in the year 1804 Hiram Rogers was married March the 19th 1818 Lasson Rogers marriedied June 16, 1829 Cornelius R. Need more info on which William Rogers this is, although Mary Walker, wife of Samuel Cowan mentioned in this deed, was first married to a Mr. Rogers (no first name). The writing on the deed referring to witness Jas. Walker could also be read "Jos." Walker. In short, this sounds like a family land transaction ... so WHO IS JACOB SMITH? This shouldn't be an accident of similar names.] In perusing the net this morning, I find the following file with Washington Co., VA, Walkers. If you look through several pages of this GEDCOM, you will find interesting possibilities for the Walkers who later lived in Campbell Co.: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=majmule&id=I3698 This file makes a assumptions, but don't all of our files do so, for Walker is a common name. But the tie-in to the Cowan family ... plus the Washington Co., VA, location ... makes it worth chasing for further info and clues. 2. Yes, I've checked it. John Smyth, son of Tobias L. Smyth, was wounded on an expedition against the Indians. He came home wounded and ill and requested his brother, Jonas, to bury him in a certain spot, which later became Smyth's Chapel Cemetery. A Methodist Church stands near by, known as Smyth's Chapel, on a lot given by the Smyth family. I don't think he married so this family cannot come from him. John Smyth, son of Eurious Smyth, died 1 month after he was born so that leaves him out. Andrew Smyth, has a John Smyth born about 1760 and two other sons, we think, Wyatt and Andrew Smyth. They may not be from this line but trying to satisfy myself that there is no way of them being in this family. Helen

    3. Helen & Leslie, Have you checked Chaulkey's? Erikus and Andreas' brother Tobias who m Mary McDonald ~1748 at Old Swede's, wound up in Washington Co, VA. The majority of his children were b in the 1750's in Augusta Co. They had a brother John who died young ~1752 in NCC. Tobias had a son John b ~1759. He is the only one of the children I know nothing about. It was Tobias' daughter Catherine that married into my McNews in Washington Co. Debra > Leslie > > Hey, it's Helen Smith Hoke. 3. I have seen in genealogical materials ( not official documents ) that her last name was Hatmaker. If so my guess is that she was from the Stinking Creek area of Campbell County TN.
