Thomas M. Smith was an ordained minister who donated the land upon which the First Baptist Church of Jellico was built. At the time, Jellico was still called Smithburg, I believe. According to historical accounts, most of the founding members of this church came from the Good Hope Church at Oswego, which I believe was about 5 miles south of Smithburg at the time. The written history of the First Baptist Church of Jellico has more information about Thomas and the founding members. Others may be able to verify this, but I believe he ran a general store in Smithburg/Jellico.
To go one step on this coke was used in making steel. In about 1870 to 1890 my husbands great grandfather Peter Jerome Adams, a brick mason, had a path he followed from one town to the other reworking the coke ovens.. At that time they were built of brick and would burn out and need to be rebuilt. He went from Pa to VA, TN, KY and other states in the south where a steel mill might be working. Steel was made in the area where used as it was not easy to move the heavy metal. I understand there were several such ovens in Tennessee and Kentucky. Peter Jerome ended his days in Middlesboro, KY which at its start was thought to be on the road to becoming the Pittsburgh of the south. Iron Ore was needed to make this steel and the deposits were not as great here as first thought. I do know that P. Jerome lived in Campbell CO. His son Vincent Jerome Adams married into the Brown / Dossett family of that area by way of Kitty Brown daughter of George Washington Brown and Nancy Jane Dossett Brown. Hope this has been some help and that it is all right as it was from memory. Helen: We have corresponded concerning this family before and I might be able to add some more thought to this family. First, if Thomas did not move to the lower Elk Fork until after his first wife died she may be buried in or near the Jellico Creek area. Jellico Creek, in which I am no authority, is quite a large area being partly in Scott County TN and Whitley County KY. Seems I have heard references to that area. The Thomas Smith Home is still standing in Jellico TN. It is right next to the Jeremiah Smith home ( the Jeremiah Smith home bring known by most as the Llewellen home, the Llewellen Funeral Home is also in this building.). Thomas, Jeremiah's brother built his home next door. If I am not mistaken Thomas' granddaughter still lives in the home. My opinion these homes dates to the late 1800's. I believe that is the date reference I saw concerning the Jeremiah Smith Home probably in Miller McDonalds book. I have always assumed that the Marriage of Jeremiah Smith To Eliza Lay is what brought the Smith brothers to the area which became Jellico. Eliza was the daughter of Jesse Lay son of Elijah Lay son of Jesse Lay and Hannah Lay Baird Lay. Jesse obtained a Land Grant from Ky in what is now Proctor Hollow near Jellico, TN. I have another thought concerning the Pine Knott post office. In early maps of the area and from my understanding of the geography of the area Pine Knott TN, ( although there was a Pine Knott KY also), can be found just across the Pine Mt on the Stinking Creek side. Some Civil War dispatches from this area refer to "Camp Pine Knott". Also in the 1875 minutes of the West Union Association of United Baptists there were 2 Ministers reported as having the Post Office address of "Pine Knott Tenn. " these ministers were from the Little Elk Church which is just a few miles from Elk Valley TN. The ministers were Michael Davis and Wm. Douglas. I believe this Rev. Michael Davis to be the same that later married my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Baird Lay Davis. If so Rev Michael Davis lived just outside the area of what became Jellico ( Falls Branch near Good Hope Church). So the nearest post office was that Pine Knott office. This may have been the post office moved to Jellico. Could not resist putting my two cents worth in. Gerald Lay MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! I did find more about him from the "Unofficial" JELLICO, Tennessee Home Page. The History of Jellico by James Hayden Siler, 1938 unpublished manuscript and the The Goodspeed Publishing Co., History of Tennessee, 1887, Pages 1194-1199. I am still researching this SMITH family and finding more and more each day and hoping others can add to this large family. I am a SMITH researcher and my SMITH's were in and around the Campbell Co, TN area and so were a few other clans of SMITH's. So to keep them separated, I am using the SMYTH spelling for these SMITH's from this line. For some reason, I am having trouble finding this family in the 1870 Census. They are just not in any census in TN or KY. I think they just were missed that year. I do have some questions that I put into my notes. I hope someone out there can answer them. This info has in no way been proven, all the way, by any means, but it is a start. I have included all my notes. Please add to or correct, if possible. Descendants of Thomas M. Smyth Generation No. 1 1. REV. THOMAS M.4 SMYTH (JAMES C.3, JOSIAH2, JOHN1) was born November 22, 1827 in Whitley Co, KY, and died January 04, 1888 in Jellico, Campbell Co, TN. He married (1) CHARLOTTE CORDELL February 16, 1848 in Whitley Co, KY, daughter of STEPHEN CANDELL/CORDELL. She was born December 21, 1829 in GA, and died August 06, 1862 in Whitley Co, KY. He married (2) DELPHIA HACKLER January 14, 1863 in Campbell Co, TN, daughter of AARON HACKLER and LUCY COX. She was born July 03, 1834 in Campbell Co, TN, and died March 04, 1921 in Campbell Co, TN. Notes for REV. THOMAS M. SMYTH: I have been told that he was a Baptist Minister, a farmer, merchant, and Justice of the Peace. Does any one know what church he was affiliated with, what type of merchant and when he served as Justice. I also was told that he served 3 months in the Burnsides Brigade. Dose anyone have any other info on his Military life. What Reg. would this be with. I believe his middle name might have been Meadows or Meadors, after his Mother's name. I have also seen him as Thomas D. Smith but I believe this is a mistake (See OBIT). ========================================================== While looking for info on Thomas M. Smith, I came across this info and thought that it might help in some way. It was taken from Campbell County Tennessee USA by Miller McDonald Vol II. Josiah Smith and his brother, Thomas D. Smith, (I believe this is Thomas M. Smith), moved to the flat areas on Elk Fork Creek from Whitley Co, KY. The Smith brothers along with Richard Perkins made up the original families that permanently settled the Jellico area. Josiah Smith succeeded in having a post office relocated from Pine Knott, KY, to his new home and he name the post office "Smithburg" Josiah's brother, Thomas, became the postmaster on 29 Oct. 1878. The name of the town was later changed to Jellico. ========================================================== 1830 Census of ***James Smith, does not show up on any census of KY or TN. He is not listed with his parents either. He married Nancy Meadows, April 20, 1826, in Whitley Co, KY. He should be in that census. He does show up in the 1840 census of Whitley Co, KY. He was born November 17, 1861, Whitley Co, KY. His mother died nine months later, August 6, 1862, Whitley Co, KY. He died eight months after her death, April 27, 1863, Whitley co, KY, at age 17 months. I wonder if she was with child when she died or if there was an outbreak of something to cause the deaths. Of course, this was during the Civil War time period. Five months after Charlotte's death, Thomas married Delphia Hackler, January 14, 1863, Campbell Co, TN. She was born in Norma to Narcissus and Elizabeth Hatfield. The family later moved to Beechfork where she met her husband, Bailey McGhee. She surrendered her life to Christ at a young age, and was a member of Norma Methodist Church. Bessie's ability to show the type of unconditional love she found in scripture to all around her was unsurpassed. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and in turn was loved by all who knew her. She had a quiet and gentle nature, with sparkling eyes and a wonderful smile. She was an excellent cook, and in her younger years even enjoyed playing softball with her grandchildren during the summer. She endured the hardships of life with an undying faith in God, and instilled a strong sense of values to her children. She was 71. This was the 11th year Mrs. Caldwell served as a full-time volunteer at this state-level position, and she was well-known among Democrats across the state and at the national level. As vice chairwoman, she represented Tennessee on the Democratic National Committee and the National Association of State Chairs and Vice Chairs. She was a member of the National Executive Committee representing the southern region and was on numerous national committees, many having to do with the Democratic National Convention. She was married to Dr. Gene Caldwell, retired Oak Ridge pediatrician and retired state representative representing the 33rd district of Anderson County, who survives. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. One of the volunteer jobs she was most proud of, according to her family, was getting at least 10 percent of the delegates elected from Tennessee to the Democratic National Conventions to be under 30 years of age for the 2000 and 2004 conventions. She then raised enough money across the state to pay their way to the conventions. Mrs. Caldwell became active in the Democratic Party in the 1970s by volunteering in local and state races. She became president of the Anderson County Democratic Women's Club and baked hundreds of pumpkin pies for the first several of John Rice Irwin's Homecoming events at the Museum of Appalachia. She became a delegate to the 1980 Democratic National Convention and repeated this for a total of five national conventions. She was to be a delegate to the 2004 convention. "Bobbie felt she was one of the luckiest people in the world," Dr. Caldwell said of his wife. "Born during the Depression, she witnessed four wars and many other events. She helped me as I served on active duty through two of those wars, Korea and Vietnam. She reared a family and always felt lucky that she could have an influence on making our government a little better and that she could influence lives with her volunteer jobs." He added that she considered herself a professional volunteer and often listed that on forms asking for her occupation. In 1988, Gov. Ned McWherter appointed her to represent Tennessee on the National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders, another volunteer job. She organized the Tennessee Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders and established a volunteer organization with a leader in each of the state's counties. They worked for tougher DUI laws and for seat belt laws especially for children. Mrs. Caldwell wrote a manual and produced a program on the proper use of children's safety restraints and presented the training to police officers and sheriffs' associations across the state. Tennessee had one of the best records in the nation in saving children's lives in car accidents, Dr. Caldwell noted. Some courts across the state offered the course she developed in lieu of fines for child-restraint- law offenders. Mrs. Caldwell served on the founding board of CASA of the Tennessee Heartland, known as Court Appointed Special Advocates of Anderson County when she helped establish the nonprofit agency. CASA trains volunteers to serve as advocates for children who are neglected or abused when their cases come before juvenile court. Dr. Caldwell said that few people knew the extent of her volunteer activities over her lifetime. Many of her volunteer roles were associated with activities of their five children. The daughter of Inez and Arnold McCoy, both now deceased, Mrs. Caldwell was born in Madison County on Aug., 25, 1932, at the height of the Depression. She played basketball at Northside High School, on one of West Tennessee's premier basketball teams, from 1948 to 1950. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in home economics, and met her future husband after volunteering to help his fraternity plan social events. She worked as a home demonstration agent, later known as extension service agents, and she was the first in the state allowed to be married. During her husband's time in medical school, Mrs. Caldwell served as president of the Student Wives Club. Later, when Dr. Caldwell was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Millington, Tenn., she was president of the Officers Wives Club for the Naval Command, becoming the official hostess and representative of the admiral at community functions. The family lived in the Rosemark community while at Millington. Their first child, Debbie, attended school there, and Mrs. Caldwell volunteered to restore the school's outdated library, conducting fund- raising events involving the PTA. She noticed a lack of activities for young girls, and organized the first Girl Scout troop in north Shelby County and became its leader. When the Caldwells moved to Oak Ridge in December 1966, Dr. Caldwell joined the Children's Clinic of Oak Ridge and Mrs. Caldwell became president of the Medical Auxiliary, participating in many volunteer activities. The youngest of their five children was born in Oak Ridge, and Mrs. Caldwell spent the next 17 years in volunteer activities with her children in school and community events. She served as a Camp Fire leader for the troop her daughter Amanda joined. The Caldwells served as host families for two international student exchange programs, and all their children participated either at home or abroad. Last year, Mrs. Caldwell put together a 50-plus-year collection of recipes collected from her mother and friends all over the country in a cookbook for her family and friends. Drawing on her home economics training, she included a low-sodium section for her husband and a galactose-free section for her three grandchildren with galactosemia. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Caldwell is survived by a son, Randolph Caldwell, and his wife, Diana Caldwell, of Munich, Germany; three daughters, Deborah Bader and her husband, Curt Bader, of Richmond, Va., and Amanda Spaid and her husband, Scott Spaid, and Jennifer Weaver and her husband, Chris Weaver, all of Knoxville; and six grandchildren, Ian Caldwell of Munich, Germany, Jeremy Birdwhistell of Denver, Colo., Nathan Birdwhistell of Tulsa, Okla, and Sean Spaid, Adam Spaid and Sarah Spaid, all of Knoxville; and a sister, Clara Haltom of Jackson. A daughter, Sarah Caldwell, died in 1983. There will be no formal service, but the family will receive friends at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton Sunday June 6, 2004 from 4-7 p.m. Clinton is handling arrangements. In keeping with all her volunteer efforts to help young people, the family requests that any memorials be in the form of gifts to the Tennessee Young Democrats, in care of the Tennessee Democratic Party, 223 Eighth Ave. N., Suite 200, Nashville, TN 37203.
