    1. Thomas B. Smith, Son of Thomas M. Smith
    2. THOMAS B. SMITH was born November 17, 1861 in Whitley Co, KY, and died April 27, 1863 in Campbell Co TN. Notes for THOMAS B. SMITH: Thomas B. Smith was the youngest child born to Thomas M. and Charlotte Cordell Smith. He was born November 17, 1861, Whitley Co, KY. His mother died nine months later, August 6, 1862, Whitley Co, KY. He died eight months after her death, April 27, 1863, Whitley co, KY, at age 17 months. I wonder if she was with child when she died or if there was an outbreak of something to cause the deaths. Of course, this was during the Civil War time period. Five months after Charlotte's death, Thomas married Delphia Hackler, January 14, 1863, Campbell Co, TN. So Delphia was raising the infant, Thomas. They had already moved to the Jellico area of Campbell Co, TN. He is buried in the Zion Hill Cemetery, Pine Knot, Whitley Co, KY, along side his Mother. ================================================================= Zion Hill Cemetery, (Near Pine Knot), Whitley Co., KY. Located in Whitley County, only one-tenth of a mile from the McCreary County line. In this cemetery rests the forefathers of many early McCrearians. Directions: From intersection of US 27 & KY 92 at Pine Knot go 5.1 miles to KY 1470 & KY 592. Continue on these roads .16 mile, where KY 1470 leaves KY 592. Go East and South 2.8 miles to Hayes Cr. Church. From church continue SE to Rock Creek drainage and along Rock Creek 6.5 miles, past Rock Creek Cemetery and Litton Branch to point where road intersects with Jellico Creek. Here turn back to NE and follow Jellico Creek's northern bank to bridge. Cross Jellico Creek and turn SE toward Tennessee. After crossing Jellico Creek, go half-mile to an unimproved road that goes NNE away from Capuchin Cr. You're near the mouth of Capuchin, where it flows into Jellico Creek. The cemetery is on the first level ground NNE of Capuchin and up a hill above a small branch that flows into Capuchin from Wolf Knob area. The total distance from Pine Knot is about 10 miles. There are 223 unmarked graves here. I would welcome any information about people that are known to be buried here in unmarked graves. We need to try to identify as many as possible. 1. More info on Thomas M. Smith
    2. Thomas M. Smith was married twice. His second wife was Delphia A. Hackler. Her parents, Aaron Hackler and Lucy Cox, are buried in the Hackler Cemetery, near Indian Mountain State Park, Jellico, Campbell Co, TN. His first wife, Charlotte Cordell, is buried in the Zion Hill Cemetery, Pine Knot, Whitley Co, KY. Her parents were Stephen Candell/Cordell and Catherine C. Patterson. I have not tracked them down yet but may be in the same cemetery. That cemetery doesn't have a complete survey online yet. I did track down some of their children. NANCY CATHERINE SMITH Two year after Nancy's mother died, she married Joseph Robert Morgan, March 31, 1864, Whitley Co, KY. Her father left Whitley shortly after her mother's death and help build Smithburg, now Jellico, Campbell Co, TN. He took most of his children with him but Nancy must have stayed behind in Whitley Co, KY, since she married there. Her father married five months after her mothers's death, to Delphia Hackler, January 14, 1863, Campbell Co, TN and later her brother, Thomas B. Smith, died, April 27, 1863, Campbell Co, TN at 17 months old. She married Joseph Morgan while the Civil War was going on. He served in two Reg during this time for Kentucky. They moved to Crawford Co, AR, Mountain Twp. by 1880 and then Crawford Co, AR, Whitley Twp., by 1900. Then they went on to Sequayah Co, OK, Hansen Twp, by 1910 and by 1920, they were in Muldrow Twp. They must have moved again before 1925. Nancy died July 09, 1925, Bixby, Tulsa Co, OK and is buried in Bixby City Cemetery, Tulsa Co, OK. Joseph lived another 13 yrs after she died. He must have moved before 1938 to Sapulpa, Creek Co, OK, where he died, October 26, 1938 and was buried along side Nancy in the Bixby City Cemetery, Tulsa Co, OK. ============================================================================== == Children 1. 3. I believe in researching old deeds I seen where an Aron Hackler who was a trustee of Good Hope when one of the deeds were executed. Seems like this was in the latter 1800's. I was looking for something concerning my Ancestor William Baird ( 1797-1869? ) who was reported to have helped organize the church in 1843 at which time he was living in Little Elk Valley Tn. He joined Clear Fork Baptist Church, just inside KY in 1824. Records for this church have been lost, I believe the clerk told me that they were lost in a fire. There were I believe a Aron Sr and an Aron Jr? Weren't they? I have a picture of this church somewhere Thought I had it scanned but search can't find it What do you all have concerning an Alvin Smith? I have a copy of a receipt to Betty Lay on acct. of John L. Lay paid in full "by Joseph Baird", signed by Alvin Smith. Dated October 1877. My Great Grandfather John L. Lay married Elizabeth Baird Josephs dau. Joseph m. Mary Smith Josiah Smith's dau. I have wondered if this store was in Jellico or Newcomb. Newcomb could have existed then for that was about time the railroad was being built, it being a railroad camp. This would have been before Jellico City Existed. The PO being Smithburg in 1876. Jellico being incorporated in 1883. Just Other Thoughts of mine! -- Gerald MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! 3. The Kingsport Times, Kingsport, TN - Dec. 14, 1923 The Charms Of Tennessee by Adda C. Hall Have you ever been in Tennessee? Do you know Her Sunny Clime: Have you seen Her fields and wood lands, In the mystic Autumn time? Have you listened to our mocking bird? In the early morning calm? Has the flood of His wondrous music Fell on your soul like balm? Have you seen in the noonday splendor Her golden fields of grain? Have you heard the tinkling music In the patter of the rain? Have you felt the glowing tingle Of the Autumn scented breeze? Have you seen the crimson glory Of the sun set through the trees? Have you watched the purple twilight Oe'r hill and valley fall? Have you heard the cow bells tinkle And the whip-poor-wills lonely call? Have you stood on the crest of the mountain All about you natures charms; And felt Gods Love overlap you? Felt safe in His loving arms? We cannot think that anywhere More happiness can be Than dwells in the hearts of the of the people Among the hills of Tennessee.

    1. J. S. Jones Disappeared 1923
    2. Mary Lou Hudson
    3. The Kingsport Times, Kingsport, TN Dec. 14, 1923 No Trace Is Found of Rev. J.S. Jones Who Disappeared Near Maryville, Tenn. Is Believed to Be Drowned In River Searching Parties Are Unable to Find Trail of Father of Mrs. F.W. Browning of This -- Wire Received No trace had been found up until noon today of Rev. J.S. Jones, father of Mrs. F.W. Browning of city, who left Maryville 11 days ago on a hunting trip and mysteriously disappeared. Searchers have been combing the banks of the Tennessee river from Euchee to Half Moon Island in the hope of finding some trace of him, but to no avail. They found where he had camped the first night after leaving Euchee, and that was all. They are confident now that he was drowned in the river. Mr. and Mrs. Browning left Kingsport for Maryville early yesterday morning. A wire from Mr. Browning was received by his friends here today, stating that the search had so far been without results. The following article relative to the disappearance of Rev. Jones is taken from the Knoxville Journal and Tribune: Knoxville, Tenn. Dec. 13. -- Rev. J.S. Jones, formerly pastor of Trinity Avenue Methodist church in Knoxville, but now a retired minister, living in Maryville, is believed to have been lost in the Tennessee river near Euchee. Searching parties are now hunting up and down the river where Dr. Jones was last seen but so far no trace of him has been found. His family and friends are fearful that he may have been drowned as a result of some mishap of his boat or killed by accidental discharge of his gun. Reports from Euchee last night were that searchers from Maryville spent all of Wednesday going up and down the river in a motor boat but failed to find any trace of Dr. Jones. The searching party will be joined today by a number of other people, and they hope to be able to locate the doctor or find some clue as to what happened to him. Missing Ten Days Dr. Jones left his home in Maryville on Monday December 10th for the purpose of going duck hunting. He told his wife he expected to be gone a week or ten days and that in the meantime he would telephone how he was getting on. He drove to Euchee and left his car with C. A. Culverhouse, who runs a general store there, telling Mr. Culverhouse he intended paddling up the river in search of ducks and that he would return in a day or two. He used a canvas boat, which according to Mr. Culverhouse, was stocked with provisions sufficient to last several days. He started up the river at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and since then nobody along the river has seen or heard of him. Sunday when Mrs. Jones failed to get any word from her husband she began making inquiries but was unable to elicit any information. Tuesday night several friends volunteered to go to Euchee and make search. As stated they spent yesterday going up and down the river but found nothing to indicate that the doctor had camped anywhere along the route. Dr. Jones has frequently hunted in this section and usually went alone in his boat. He would remain out for a day or two and return to where he left his car or telephone for his car to be sent down the river to him. On this trip, however he has not telephoned, written or sent any message and his family and friends are greatly worried. Mrs. Jones when seen in Maryville last night declared that she had not abandoned hope, and while greatly worried over the prolonged absence of her husband felt that he would turn up safe. "I feel sure that Dr. Jones has sent some word and that the messenger failed to deliver the message," said Mrs. Jones. "He is an experienced hunter, knows the river well and handles a boat like an expert. He has been on these trips many times and has always come back safe. I am hoping for the best and I think he will be found safe and sound. I talked with some friends in Rockwood tonight who are on the way to Euchee to aid in the search and they informed me they had heard that the hunting was splendid down the river, which causes me to think that my husband is enjoying himself so much with the sport he is having that he decided to remain longer." C.A. Culverhouse at Euchee told a Journal and Tribune reporter that the opinion at Euchee was that Dr. Jones had met with some accident. He carried provisions enough to last about two days, according to Mr. Culverhouse and said as he left that he would return in a day or two. This was more than ten days ago, according to Mr. Culverhouse and since then there has been nothing seen or heard of the doctor. Mr. Culverhouse said that Dr. Jones had often been hunting there before and always returned within a day or two. The searching parties he said would resume their hunt this morning. Well Known in State Dr. Jones is one of the best known men in this section of the state. For years he was prominent in ministerial circles and at one time was mentioned as a possible bishop of the church. She has a number of relatives in Knoxville and in this section of the state. Mrs. Charles O. Baird is his daughter. His other daughters are Mrs. Guy Shoun, of Greenville, and Mrs. Alexander Harkness of Jellico. He also has a son Herbert Jones of Jellico. If the searchers today fail in their efforts it is believed the hunt will be extended further up and down the river from Euchee where Dr. Jones started.
