A highlight of early childhood was galloping on her horse through the back streets of Newark at dusk smelling the honeysuckle, her family said. In high school, she won the city wide essay competition and later rounded Cape Horn in a storm, viewing the scene from the ships topmost crows' nest. In the early 1920s, she was the first woman to summit Mount Ranier in early spring, a feat that required 24 hours of continuous climbing and descending since shelters were buried in up to 20 to 30 feet of snow and ice. Helen, Thank you for the information on George W. Smith. I think some of the information is incorrect. I believe George W. Smith's 1st wife was Julia Ann Smith, a daughter of Sterling Robert Smith and his 1st wife, whose name is unknown. Sterling Robert Smith was the son of Robert Smith and Sarah Moss. Sterling Robert Smith married 2nd to Margaret (Leinart) Queener. I believe that is where the Queener comes into this family. Does anyone know if there is any proof that George W. Smith's wife, Louisa was a Tiller? I thought she was a Parrott. Thanks, Paul History is just one damn thing after another!
