From The Oak Ridger 15 Jul 2004 Harold James Braden, 75, of the Coalfield Thomas Robert Messere, 35, of Lake Charles, La., Harold James Braden, 75, of the Coalfield community, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born April 2, 1929, in Anderson County. After marrying, he moved to Ohio where he worked in construction, moving back to Tennessee in 1958, where he worked in the coal industry. He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in Germany during the Korean conflict. Several years later, Mr. Braden went to work for Carlisle-McCall Coal Co. as a foreman, retiring in 1991. From 1994 to 1999, he and his brother owned and operated B&B Used Cars in Coalfield. Mr. Braden was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a church trustee for approximately 30 years. His family said he loved his church and everyone in the Coalfield community. He was loved in return by his community and never met a stranger, only friends not yet known. According to his family, he was also was very proud of the new Coalfield Park, which he helped to establish. He was a member of the Coalfield Lyons Club for over 40 years. His family said he was also an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking. According to his family, Mr. Braden loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one of his favorite pastimes was spending time with his great-granddaughter, Maci, who shared their home. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Edward Carroll; a great-grandson, Ian Carroll; and by his parents, Clarence and Nina Jett Braden. Mr. Braden is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred Dalton Braden, and by his children, Tim Carroll and wife, Marie, of Harriman, Rebecca Kicklighter and husband, Karl, of Dallas, Ga., Michael Carroll and wife, Donna, of Kingston, Ruthe Sinclair of Calhoun, Ga., and Jeanette Northrup and husband, Vince, of Ranger, Ga. Born Oct. 30, 1928, in Bedford, Ind., he was the son of Ray Bruce Child and Louva Helen Child of Austin, Texas. He moved with his family to Austin, Texas in 1936 from California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school graduation and served from 1948 to 1951 as a photographer instructor. After his discharge from the army, Dr. Child attended the University of Texas and graduated with a bachelor's degree. After graduation, he moved to Oak Ridge with his wife, Mary, in 1956 to work for Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While employed there, he attended the University of Tennessee and received his doctorate degree in physics in 1965. He was a member of the American Physical Society and listed in Who's Who in Technology Today. He was an author/co-author of over 100 scientific papers. Dr. Child retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Sept. 30, 1993. After retirement, he continued work at the laboratory consulting. He was a member of the Camera Club, the East Tennessee Computer Society, Oak Ridge PC Users Group and Friends of ORNL. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Michael Tom Fowler, 56, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at his home. He was born Jan. 20, 1948, in Canyon, Texas. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1966 and attended East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. He was an avid fisherman and his family said he knew all the good fishing spots. According to his family, Mr. Fowler enjoyed playing chess and was a talented writer and wrote numerous articles about fishing for the Knoxville Journal and various magazines. For a brief period, he wrote the "Outdoors" column for The Oak Ridger and covered fishing tournaments. He also worked as a security guard. Mr. Fowler is survived by his parents Waunett and Tom Bill Fowler. His family said the body was cremated as he requested and there will be no public funeral. She met her husband, Richard "Jack," while working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. They were married for 53 years prior to his death in 1999. She was the Anderson County Juvenile Court Clerk from 1968 to 1983. Throughout, Mrs. Snead was a devoted wife and mother, who was actively involved in numerous athletic leagues involving her husband and sons, her family said. She was a past president of the Timely Topics club and a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where her family said she enjoyed serving on the church altar guild. Can anyone connect this Lynch-Miller family to the Smith family listed. I believe this is Mabel Gladys Miller, who married Frederick Webster Lynch.
