    2. I would love to have a scanned picture of the hospital, also. It's interesting that so many people seem to have had a relative there at one time or another. My gg-aunt was there because she had epilepsy. 2. Lakeshore Park is located on Lyons View Pike at Northshore Drive in Knoxville, Tennessee. The park is approximately one and one-half miles south of Interstate 40 at the Papermill Road exit. Lyons View Gardens will be developed on a thirty acre tract near the park entrance from Lyons View Pike. The site of the gardens begins at the park entrance and runs east and south to the hilltop overlooking the Tennessee River and Mount LeConte, the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. The first phase of the gardens covers the six acre hilltop. Site History The Lakeshore property consists of approximately 185 acres, which was originally part of a larger farm acquired by Captain William Lyon in 1809. Captain Lyon constructed a log cabin, later expanded to a substantial two story log residence, near the current entrance to Lakeshore Park from Northshore Drive. The home was located between Fourth Creek and the Tennessee River, and Captain Lyon constructed a mill on Fourth Creek near the current site of the intersection of Northshore Drive and Lyons View Drive. Captain Lyon was a colorful character and a friend and promoter of Andrew Jackson. While President of the United States, Jackson frequently stayed at the Lyon home when traveling between Nashville and Washington D.C. The highest hill on the Lyon property held a commanding view of the Tennessee River and the Great Smoky Mountains beyond. The hilltop became known as "Lyons View" and, with the improvement of the roads, became a common destination for family outings. The road from Kingston Pike to the site became known as Lyons View Pike. On March 31, 1874, the daughters of William Lyon, Mary Lyon Craig and Louise Lyon Barnes, conveyed approximately 300 acres of the Lyon property to the State of Tennessee for the establishment of a "Hospital for the Insane". Shortly thereafter, the state began construction and operation of the mental health institute that continues to occupy a portion of the site today. In response to the need for additional public recreational space, the State of Tennessee, with the support of Governor Ned McWhorter and Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, granted the City of Knoxville the right to use a portion of the property for a public park, which opened in 1994. The State of Tennessee and the City of Knoxville continued discussions concerning the highest and best use of the property, given changes in the delivery of mental health services. In 1999, the State Building Commission approved a master plan for the Lakeshore property that includes a thirty acre site for a future mental health facility, a twenty-five acre site for expansion of the Veterans Cemetery and a thirty acre site for public gardens, with the remainder of the site to be used as a public park. The State agreed to deed the park land to the City as it became available, and a substantial portion of the site was deeded to the City of Knoxville in 1999.

    1. Eastern State Hospital, Lake Shore Hospital
    2. I am going to post what I received from another wonderful person from this list so that maybe it will help others looking for a person in the State Hospital in Knoxville Co, TN. There are a few listed from Campbell Co, TN. I was told that sometime in the early 1900's, the building burned down and was rebuilt and renamed Lake Shore. This is a partial listing, all I have on grave sites at Eastern State Hospital, Knoxville, TN. When we were trying to locate the gravesite of our Great Grandmother, Edna Yearout Stinnett, we received this listing. All of the listed died and were buried at the State Mental Hospital, now known as Lake Shore Hospital. If you have need to locate someone who possibly died there, call Pam Graff, as she was most helpful. Most of these people died without any acknowledgement of family as they were buried on state grounds. Some may have been covered up or hidden from future generations due to embarrassment. History has proven that people could be admitted without truly being insane. Some may have suffered from extreme depression, or many other reasons which are now completely curable today. Whatever the case may be, each and everyone of these people were human beings, who should not be disowned by todays standards. The cemetery across from Lake Shore Hospital is a mixture of Veterans graves, black graves and white graves. All burials outside of the Veterans section were paupers graves, bodies unclaimed by family who perhaps were unable to pay for services rendered. This is only a partial listing of the people buried near Edney, all in row 2 which borders the Veteran's section, also known as the white section. To locate one of these sites is quite easy. Just count the sites using the nice stone we placed on Edna's gravesite. The Grave number may be hidden underneath grass, you may have to really search, but they are there. 2. Thanks, Neal, that would be wonderful. You are a doll. Really, all I want to know is when he died and where he is buried? The military pension papers told me a lot about him. My great grandfather was his guardian, his brother and guardian to his three children, after he was sent back there. Was hoping to find his gravesite and get a headstone, if he doesn't have one. Thanks to everyone that has answered my questions on this matter. You all, like always have been a big help. Does anyone know where Walker or Stockville in Campbell Co, TN was located? Helen

    2. Helen, I don't know the rules at Lake Shore them self... but I can tell you with the new Hippa Laws in Medical care it will probably be difficult to get any info on the person unless you have a death certificate and an attorny. So it may be very costly. You may contact them and ask if you can get any general info on the patient from that time from if you have a death certificate on the person you are looking for. I work in the medical field as an EMT... and belive me... the hippia law binds a lot of information. We can't even tell a family member that we transported someone unless they are the power of attorny or a parent of a minor. Melinda
