Release No. 09-16-04 Sept. 23, 2004 Rumor hinders NPRC ability to perform job A false rumor circulating on the Internet, in e-mails, and among veteran service organizations is causing problems at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) where military records are stored. The rumor that Official Military Personnel Files at the NPRC will be digitized and then destroyed is simply not true. Every minute taken to squelch a rumor is a minute taken away from the primary job. Neither the Department of Defense nor the NPRC intend to destroy any official files stored at the Center, according to officials of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the agency under which NPRC falls. The purpose of any electronic scanning would be to help preserve the originals and increase efficiency in handling reference requests. NARA preserves and protects records that were transferred from the military service departments because they are permanently valuable records that document the essential evidence of military service for the veterans of our nation. NPRC stores and services official records for retired, discharged, or deceased military personnel. NPRC responds to approximately 4,000 requests pertaining to military records each day, totaling more than 1 million requests each year. Many of those requests are for Separation Documents (usually DD Form 214) and the Center answers the majority of those inquiries in 10 days or less. Officials point out that requests resulting from this false rumor will have a negative impact on NPRC's ability to respond to requests from veterans with real immediate needs, such as medical treatment, employment, retirement, etc. =========================================== SUPPORT OUR TROOPS---FLY THE FLAG "Genealogy is like playing hide and seek. The son of Charles and Mae Elizabeth Brooks Wardell, he was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa., but grew up in Chester, Pa. According to his family, at the age of 16, he went to work as an apprentice in the drafting department of Sun Shipyards. In a few months, he was selected to be sent to Drexel University for training. After he completed his studies, he returned to Sun and worked in the engineering department and quickly became an expert in the Docksford diesel engine, used by most oil tanks and naval ships. During World War II, Mr. Wardell served as a civilian consultant to the U.S. Navy and was flown throughout the South Pacific assessing damages and supervising repairs to ships using the Docksford engine. Shortly after the war, he was approached by Aristotle Onassis for help with two ships Onassis had purchased to transport refugees from Europe to Australia, his family said. The ships were equipped with the Docksford and Onassis could not risk having a breakdown during the trips and hired Mr. Wardell to keep things operating smoothly during the transports, the family said. Everything went well for two trips but Mr. Wardell decided to go home. He had had enough of war and not seeing his family. Mr. Wardell returned to Chester and joined a new subsidiary of the Sun Co. called Catalytic Construction and Engineering. For several years, he was involved in refinery construction. In 1956, Catalytic was awarded a contract in Oak Ridge and Mr. Wardell was named manager, a position he held until he retired in 1975. Mr. Wardell and his wife, Mary, were avid golfers and one of the first things they did was join the Oak Ridge Country Club. For over 40 years they enjoyed the golf and social activities of the club. According to his family, his other great interest was ham radio. He got his first license at age 12, with the call sign 3ATZ. As he became more efficient he upgraded to W3DGM and finally the highest class, with call sign K4PJ. In 1956, he was the national winner of the American Radio Relay League's code contest. He was active for years in the Oak Ridge Amateur Radio Club, where he became acquainted with Bill O'Kain and acted as his mentor or "Elmer" as he mastered the code and became a world class operator. His wife Mary died in 1987. The couple had no children. Mr. Wardell is survived by a brother-in-law, Joseph Daugherty, of Tampa, Fla.; his good friend and golf partner, Eloise Yonts; and "ham" friends Ruby and Bill O'Kain. Hi Bonnie--I saw your note. On the same 1850 TN census page as your Phillip, separated by a family of Ridenours, is another Malicoat family at #321. Simeon Malicoat, 33, a collier, is living with Sarah, 20, and Phillip, 21, also a collier. Campbell Co records show a Simeon Mallicoat married a Sarah Reed around March 1850. Clearly, this younger Phillip is unlikely to be Simeon's son, so perhaps he is a son of your Phillip by an earlier marriage? In July 1854 a Simeon Mallicoat married a Nancy Wheeler (she is my connection). The 1850 Campbell TN census, 17th subdivision, shows (#630) a Nancy J Wheeler, 38, apparently a widow with children. From other info, I believe she was also living at that time near Cedar Creek, just north of where the Cedar Creek Road today crosses Cedar Creek at the Cedar Creek Bridge. It seems like it was this Simeon and this Nancy that got married in 1854. However, I have never been able to find any evidence of them after their marriage. During your research, have you ever heard anything about this family? It seems likely that your Phillip and Simeon must have been related, to both be living that close together and both working in the coal mines. Perhaps also, this Simeon or Phillip may be the missing father to your other Prior born in 1862. Steve >Morning List! > >I am currently researching a mystery in my family tree. This is posted on the NARA Facilities, National Personnel Records Center (St. Louis, MO), web site in their frequently asked questions (FAQ) section. 9. I've heard that NPRC will be scanning my military records and destroying the original documents, and that I can have the paper file if I request it. Is that true? No, NPRC does not intend to destroy paper Official Military Personnel Files (OMPFs). We are expanding our use of information technology for request and record tracking, but the purpose of any electronic scanning will be to reduce the handling of fragile records during the reference process or to reduce the time necessary to locate an OMPF. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect the Official Military Personnel Files, as they are permanently valuable records documenting the essential evidence of military service for the veterans of our nation. We will send only photocopies of documents when we respond to requests.
From The Oak Ridger 17 Sep 2004 Dr. Harry Hopkins Hubbell Jr., 90, of Oak Ridge, Georgia A. Moore, 87, of Lake City, Dr. Harry Hopkins Hubbell Jr., 90, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Meridian Health Center in Englewood, Colo., of congestive heart failure and pneumonia. Born July 23, 1914, in Buffalo, N.Y., Dr. Hubbell was the son of the late Rev. Harry Hopkins Hubbell and the late Ella Watson Kelton Hubbell. He grew up in St. Louis, Mo., and Morristown, N.J., and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire in 1931. In 1935, he received his bachelor's degree from Williams College, Mass. He earned his master of science degree in physics from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., in 1937 and his doctorate also in physics from Princeton University in N.J., in 1947. He spent 15 years teaching undergraduate physics at Princeton and Williams, Amherst, Lafayette, and Middlebury colleges. An Oak Ridge resident for 49 years, Dr. Hubbell retired in 1973 from the Health Physics Division (later Health and Safety Research) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The following year he was called back as a consultant to the division, a position he held for the next 15 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, a board member and patron of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association and a life member, local treasurer, and senior navigator with the United States Power Squadrons and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for more than 50 years. In 1960, the Hubbells resided for several months in Japan, where Harry was a consultant with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (now the Radiation Effects Research Foundation). He studied the effects of radiation and assisted the Japanese in calculating radiation doses for survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dr. Hubbell and his family also spent a year in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was employed by the European Center for Nuclear Research. He presented some of his research results at several universities in China as a part of Scientific Exchange in 1986. The Hubbells participated in 16 Elderhostels together, and they enjoyed traveling extensively in North America and overseas. Harry's hobbies included entertaining foreign visitors, snow-skiing (both downhill and cross-country), power boating, water-skiing, hiking, fixing things, reading, writing to many friends, climbing 14,000-foot mountains and listening to classical music and anything played by the Oak Ridge Community Wind Ensemble. I am sending to those lists and researchers I am familiar with. Please pass on as you see fit. Thanks to my husband who knows my passion for genealogy, I received this message today. This is being sent to many military commands - that's how it came across my husband's desk. I do NOT know if this applies to the older records or all. PLEASE take time to check out the details and if you had considered sending away for records - it looks like the time is NOW! Regards, Maria - - Original message - - The National Personnel Record Center that is responsible for maintaining archives of our military records is automating their storage and management of our military records. When this is complete they plan to destroy the hard copies of the records unless requested by the veteran or a deceased veteran's family to send those records to them. If a veteran or members of the deceased veteran's family wants to request those records be sent to them instead of being destroyed he/she can make a request by mail to: National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records 9700 Page Ave. St. Louis, MO 63132-5100 or: make the request online at: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/ When you submit your request online, a signature form downloadable from the site can be sent to you for completion and submission. The National Personnel Records Center will then send you an e-mail acknowledging your request. ==== TNCAMPBE Mailing List ==== Do not spam or send derogatory comments to any other subscriber to this list. _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search.
