It is bounded on the north by Meigs and McMinn Counties, and the Hiwassee River, on the east by Polk County, on the west by Hamilton County, and on the south by the Georgia state line. The county was formed in 1836 from lands ceded by the Cherokee Indians under the Treaty of New Echota. It is named for Col. Edward Bradley, who served in the War of 1812 and was a friend of Andrew Jackson. Cleveland, the county seat, is named for Col. Benjamin Cleveland, one of the heroes of King's Mountain (1780). The land that was to become Bradley County was chosen as the site for the Cherokee Indian Agency. It was established at Charleston in 1819. Return J. Meigs , known as White Eagle to the Indians, was the first agent to serve at this location. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ The sale of the Cherokee land in the Ocoee District started approx. 1839. Barbara, I don't find a Wilson Thomas on the listings for the land sold in the Ocoee District. Thomas listings: Thomas, Abraham Thomas, Enock Thomas, John Roberta, no Tomlins, or George Longs. Longs listed: Long, Alexander Long, Harry Long, Henry Long, Isaac Long, Jno. P. Long, John Long, John P. Audrey, no Romines on the Ocoee District list. If you all think your ancestors were in the area before 1840, look at Rhea, Marion, Bledsoe or one of the surrounding counties of Hamilton/Bradley that were formed before 1836. Most were coming in from those areas at the time of the Cherokee Removal. Anita Hinson
