    1. [TNBRADLE-L] Collins and Browns of Bradley Co.
    2. Hello all, enjoy looking at this site and watching as your histories progress. My mother's family all came from Bradley Co., mostly Cleveland area. My grandmother is 83 now and doesn't remember much of the family history beyond her immediate family and my mother never took much interest in it. I want to find out when the Collins' and Brown's came to this country, the Collins' (may have been O'Collins originally) being most recent but not sure when. I only know they shipped out of County Cork for America. If I tell you what I know maybe that will trigger something for someone: My maternal grandfather was Luther Edmond Collins, born Sept. 8,. 1915, died Dec. 29 (?), 1980. He had a couple of sisters (I only remember Bessie) and 2 or 3 brothers (Paul and Bill are the only ones I know for sure). His father was Arthur B. Collins, had a very small farm between Ocoee Dr. and Mouse Creek Rd. near Sunset Dr., very near where my grandma still lives today. Arthur was married twice. Don't know much about my great-grandma, she was Luther's real mother and was out of the picture by the time he was 2 y/o (1917). I assume she died but don't know that for a fact. Then a step-mother entered the picture, whom he never spoke of. Of Luther's real mother, I seem to remember him telling us she was a Douglas(s) [pronounced 'Doo-glahs') and was Scottish (or this may be Arthur's mother, not straight on this). Arthur was, I think we were told, an Irish-immigrant though he was only 3y/o when he came and where they landed or how they got to Cleveland, I do not know. This, I'm afraid, is all I know of the Collins side of the family. My maternal grandmother is Laura Beatrice (Bea) Brown Collins. She was born on November 28th, 1915 on a farm in west Bradley Co., which still is pretty much as it was at the time of her birth (or was as of 10 yrs. ago). Her parents were David Franklin Brown, who died of cholera (something common in drinking water at the time) when she was 6 or 7, I think. And her mother was Ollie Olena Webb Brown. Some of my grandma's sisters are still live today, most in GA, or TN near the GA state line. Of David Franklin Brown, I know no more. Don't know where his people were from or when they came to Bradley Co. Of Ollie, I know her parents were a Samuel (or was it Tom?) Webb, and her mother was Martha Ann Richmond Webb. They were farmers in the vicinity, though not sure where. Somewhere on my grandmother's side of the family there is supposed to be Cherokee. My guess is Ollie's side, in the pictures of her, she has a long lean face and high cheek bones. And that is, I'm afraid, the extent of my knowledge of my family. I live in Phoenix now and it's very rare for me to get to TN these days. If these names look familiar to anyone, or you've run across any mention of these names in your own searches, I would be much obliged for any information thay anyone might send. It would be wonderful if all the historical records housed in dusty old files at the courthouse were put onto a website for us genealogy buffs. Maybe one of these days...one can always dream! Thanks to all and good luck with your own searches. There's a nice sort of kinship here with all of you searching for past relatives from Bradley. From all over the country, maybe the world, we come here looking for something we all share in common. That's pretty neat! Best of luck, y'all!!
