    1. Planning Ahead on Out-of-Town Research Trips
    2. East Tennessee Historical Society
    3. Hello, I wanted to send a friendly reminder to all genealogists who may be planning to make out-of-town research trips in the future. It is always a good idea to call ahead to your planned destination to make sure your trip runs smoothly. Last Friday, a couple arrived in Knoxville eagerly looking forward to researching in the East Tennessee Historical Center. This couple drove 700 miles from Texas and arrived on Friday morning to find the McClung Historical Collection closed for the day! The Knox County Library System (of which the McClung Historical Collection is a part) closes one day a year for a staff training in-service day. As fate would have it, it was the day the researchers from Texas arrived in town. We were all naturally quite upset for them. It was an expensive, but valuable, lesson learned. *ALWAYS* call in advance before visiting an out-of-town research site. In addition to the various national holidays, you never know what local holidays or other events may conspire to change the normal operating schedules of various research sites across the country. On our part, we will try to keep everyone updated of the East Tennessee Historical Center's schedule adjustments through these mailing lists and on our web page at http://www.korrnet.org/eths/ Good luck in all your ancestor hunting. Sincerely, Shane S. Rhyne, Public Relations Coordinator East Tennessee Historical Society P.O. 1. First Families of Tennessee Workshop-- May 23
    2. East Tennessee Historical Society
    3. The East Tennessee Historical Society will host a free First Families of Tennessee "How-To" Workshop on Saturday, May 23, 1998, at the historical society's headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee. The workshop is specifically designed to assist people who have hit "brick walls" while working on their First Families of Tennessee application but should be helpful to anyone researching their family tree in 18th-century Tennessee. Cherel Henderson, ETHS associate director and First Families of Tennessee project coordinator, will lead the workshop from 10 am until 12 noon in the East Tennessee Historical Center's Lucille S. Thompson Auditorium (600 Market Street). A map is located at http://www.korrnet.org/eths/map.htm Topics and questions to be addressed will include: "How to prove an ancestor was in Tennessee before 1796," "Acceptable sources to prove descent," and "Advice on completing the FFT application" No advance registration for this workshop is required and admission is free. Membership in First Families of Tennessee is open to anyone who can prove descent from an ancestor who was in Tennessee by the time of statehood in 1796. For additional information about the East Tennessee Historical Society, including its First Families of Tennessee heritage project, visit the ETHS web pages at http://www.korrnet.org/eths/ Sincerely, Shane S.
