Hello all, enjoy looking at this site and watching as your histories progress. My mother's family all came from Bradley Co., mostly Cleveland area. My grandmother is 83 now and doesn't remember much of the family history beyond her immediate family and my mother never took much interest in it. I want to find out when the Collins' and Brown's came to this country, the Collins' (may have been O'Collins originally) being most recent but not sure when. I only know they shipped out of County Cork for America. If I tell you what I know maybe that will trigger something for someone: My maternal grandfather was Luther Edmond Collins, born Sept. 8,. 1915, died Dec. 29 (?), 1980. He had a couple of sisters (I only remember Bessie) and 2 or 3 brothers (Paul and Bill are the only ones I know for sure). His father was Arthur B. Collins, had a very small farm between Ocoee Dr. and Mouse Creek Rd. near Sunset Dr., very near where my grandma still lives today. Arthur was married twice. Don't know much about my great-grandma, she was Luther's real mother and was out of the picture by the time he was 2 y/o (1917). I assume she died but don't know that for a fact. Then a step-mother entered the picture, whom he never spoke of. Of Luther's real mother, I seem to remember him telling us she was a Douglas(s) [pronounced 'Doo-glahs') and was Scottish (or this may be Arthur's mother, not straight on this). Arthur was, I think we were told, an Irish-immigrant though he was only 3y/o when he came and where they landed or how they got to Cleveland, I do not know. This, I'm afraid, is all I know of the Collins side of the family. My maternal grandmother is Laura Beatrice (Bea) Brown Collins. She was born on November 28th, 1915 on a farm in west Bradley Co., which still is pretty much as it was at the time of her birth (or was as of 10 yrs. ago). Her parents were David Franklin Brown, who died of cholera (something common in drinking water at the time) when she was 6 or 7, I think. And her mother was Ollie Olena Webb Brown. Some of my grandma's sisters are still live today, most in GA, or TN near the GA state line. Of David Franklin Brown, I know no more. Don't know where his people were from or when they came to Bradley Co. Of Ollie, I know her parents were a Samuel (or was it Tom?) Webb, and her mother was Martha Ann Richmond Webb. They were farmers in the vicinity, though not sure where. Somewhere on my grandmother's side of the family there is supposed to be Cherokee. My guess is Ollie's side, in the pictures of her, she has a long lean face and high cheek bones. And that is, I'm afraid, the extent of my knowledge of my family. I live in Phoenix now and it's very rare for me to get to TN these days. If these names look familiar to anyone, or you've run across any mention of these names in your own searches, I would be much obliged for any information thay anyone might send. It would be wonderful if all the historical records housed in dusty old files at the courthouse were put onto a website for us genealogy buffs. Maybe one of these days...one can always dream! Thanks to all and good luck with your own searches. There's a nice sort of kinship here with all of you searching for past relatives from Bradley. From all over the country, maybe the world, we come here looking for something we all share in common. That's pretty neat! Best of luck, y'all!!
Anita, Thank you for all your help and the history of Bradley county. It should come in handy. Nice to have an idea where most of the people came from before 1836. I know my Long was in Bradley county on the 1840 census and Polk county for 1850. Emily, Thanks for the list of property owners. Now I know that George was there by 1837. I knew he was on the 1840 census and on the 1850 he was in Polk county. Don't know rather or not he died there. George Long married Sarah Slover and his son Thomas married Minerva (Mary Jane) Tomlin in McMinn county, or we think that is where they married. Everyone take care and have a nice weekend. Roberta.
I am looking for anyone who may have Sisco's as an ancestor and that from Bradley Co., Tn. I have found Jefferson Sisco on a 1850 Bradley Co. census but, prior to that I'm in the dark. Thanks, Barbara
Hi, I have been trying to find my greatgrandparents in Bradley Co. Henry Williams who married Mary Beard. My grandmother Clara Elizabeth Williams was born in Cleveland in 1889. This is all I have been able to find out about them for twenty-five years. Has anyone run across any of these names? Hi Audrey and list, I don't remember if we corresponded on the Romine name before but my ancestor Wilson Thomas b. abt 1815 d. 1891 in Bradley Co., mar. abt 1837-38, Tresa Wetson? b. abt 1816......their son Vance Thomas b. abt 1859 in Bradley Co. married 23 Oct 1883 in Bradley Co., Saville ROMINES b. unk. Since my Wilson was in Bradley Co. in 1840 Census and his son married there maybe your Romines were there when Wilson's family was there?? However, I do not know Saville's parents names. Hi Emily, Thanks for answering my post. I forgot to check my history book yesterday before going to the library or I would have known Bradley county wasn't formed yet. I was just surprised that there was nothing for Indian lands. The family I am researching is George And Sarah Long. I know they were in Bradley county in 1840 but I don't know when they arrived there from SC. Barb, thanks for writing and it looks like we are going to find out the answers together. By the way I live in Colorado and have never been luckie enough to visit Tennessee.Would like to make that a vacation sometime.Take care and thanks for trying to help. Hope you find George on the tax list. Also check and see if Wesley Tomblin/Tomlin is there. Thank you. Roberta Summers.

Hi Emily, I Love You!! We just had a brief rain with a little hail. It is supposed to rain tomorrow too. We need it bad. Don't know why I thought of you when it rained. Hi Roberta, If you get an answer to your question please let me know. My ancestor Wilson Thomas was in the 1840 Census of Bradley Co. I am not sure when he got there but he was married with two little children in the 1840 census. I know he came to Bradley from Monroe Co., TN. And I don't think he was married in Monroe, but in Bradley to Tresa Wetson, so he must have been there at least by 1838. I read somewhere that in 1836 there was some sort of organization to build a fort and remove the Indians? Maybe someone on the Bradley Co. list can give us some history on this Removal of the Indians in 1836. I am wondering if this is why my Wilson went to Bradley to play a part in this, and assume he was an early settler at this time? Does anyone have any information on these early years of 1836 in Bradley? Thank you Connie for letting us know of the death of Jackie. I will have her family in my thoughts. I can only think that Jackie now has found all the information she was seeking. Even though I did not know her personally, Jackie was a tremendous sharing and caring person with all the time she had put in to the Polk & Bradley Co. Websites, and all the information she was willing to share with us. I will say a little prayer for her family and close friends.
