    1. [TNBlount] Down but not out.
    2. Hi folks, Your going to have to read a SOB story. We got about 4 inches of snow over the weekend followed with freezing rain and sleet. The weather is supposed to stay close to freezing for the rest of the week. There is another big storm scheduled for next weekend, or so I have heard. Last month I orderd a new wall oven for my kitchen. Paid cash in advance. Last friday it came from the factory to the dealer. Yesterday my local installer went to Knoxville and picked it up and brought it to my house yesterday afternoon to install it. Yesterday morning I went to my doctor for a second installment of a complete and thorough physical. Had my blood work done a couple of weeks ago and everything is within reasonable limits for a person my age (chlorestal and such). Had an EKG, Chest X-ray and peed in the bottle yesterday morning. Most uncomfortable was the prostate exam, but he said it was normal. He listened to my heart, breathing, etc. then he had to scare me half to death by scheduleing me into the cadriac unit in Oak Ridge today for a echogram of the two arteries going up to my brain. Then on 1 february he has me scheduled to go back to the Cardiac unit for a visit with a Cardiologist and get setup for a stress test of my heart. My doctor likes to scare me. He (and I) want to know how much my heart has been damaged by this heart trouble that I have. He also wants to know how much blockage (plaque) there is in the heart arteries. On the way home I stopped at an ATM machine to get three hundred dollars from my bank account. The machine went through the motions but gave me no money. I then had to backtrack to the credit union to get myself $300 and report the problem. I know from the way they acted that they thought I was lieing. The machine charged my account but delivered no cash. Now 600 dollars has been withdrawn from my account but I only got 300. They promised to investigate. Then yesterday in the afternoon the installer arrived with the new oven. It has two doors, both black glass front's. The top large door glass was broken in shipment and the broken glass scratched the bottom door glass. Now I have to wait for two new doors to be shipped and installed. I went today and had the echogram done on my neck. On the way home we had a near flat tire. Never knew it was so difficult to find a place that had air for your tires. This evening while Judy was cooking dinner the furnace quit. After hours but I found a service man. He come and did an inspection and told me the igniter was burned out. There was nothing he could do until tomorrow when he could get to a parts place and get a new igniter. The tempature outside is 28 degrees and going down to about 12 degrees tonight. Started calling other service men. Found one that had a new igniter. He came and installed it and now I am back in business. Cant take the stress like I used to. My blood pressure is up and I am a nervous wreck. Just took two 0.5 mg zanex to make me relax. I will have to wait until tomorrow to try to follow all the mail. I have to go back to Dr. Googe (my eye Doctor) tomorrow afternoon to have this bad eye checked out. I can tell that a catarac is developing, so I know that another eye operation is in the works. Wouldnt be surpriseed if he wants to do it thursday. Jacksonville Florida and the Tennessee professional football teams played sunday in the final playoff's before the superbowl. At halftime when Jacksonville was ahead, Erin (my 13 year old grand-daughter) e-mailed me and wanted to bet me $50 dollars on the game. She was sure her Jacksonville team was going to win since she knew Tennessee was judged an 8 point underdog by the professionals. She wanted to make some money for her school trip to Washington. Needless to say, she now owes me $50. I sent her the $50 anyway. I know that I will be back up and running before long, so dont stop writing. 2. Frogtown is across the old one lane bridge from Lamar Alexander Parkway Hwy 33 (New Walland Hwy.) to Old Walland Hwy. Go to the left instead of to the right, as most folks do. This will take you to Frogtown, such as it is.

    1. [TNBlount] Union question: Carey...Watkins
    2. Doris Fountain
    3. Like your CAREY ancestor, my Watkins/Hart/Duncan-Dunkin/Hooker lines also went to KY to join the Union side. My Wm. Douglas Watkins b 1843 was a private; his brother Samuel died of measles in KY. Wm. and Samuel's father Wm. Watkins b 1805 TN, my 2nd ggrandfather, was beaten to death by bushwackers because of his having two sons in Union Army. This man who was beaten lived outside Loudon, TN, at the community of Piney where my Watkins line lived. Perhaps you can find your kin in the same units with mine: http://w3.one.net/~durp/CivilWar/Union.htm I have wondered for some time why virtually every part of this line (Duncan/Hart/Moore/Watkins/Hooker) fought on Union side. Much of E TN was Union, but the usual reasons given by researchers just don't make much sense to me. Perhaps it relates to their previous connections to Maryland/PA ties, to Quaker anti-slavery sentiments, or the like. Doris in VA

    3. Wm. WATKINS b 1805 TN m 1826 Knox CO, TN, Margaret Byerley/Bierley, dau. of Casper byerley, Jr, of sC and wife Mary MOORE b ca 1767. Wm. is mentioned on 1839 estate papers of a Benj. WATKINS which were supposed to be adm. by a James M. BELL in 1840. Wm. and Margaret's son Wm. Douglas Watkins b 1843 married Nancy BROWN HART, dau. of George B. HART b 1816 TN and wife Ellen Ekens/Akens. William b 1805 had both brother and son named Samuel, latter of whom fought (and died of measles) with Wm. Douglas Watkins in Union Army. Researchers in Anne Arundel CO, MD, say that my Wm. Watkins b 1805 is son of a John Watkins/Elizabeth HALL of MD, via a Stephen WATKINS/WARMAN marriage who migrated from MD to WVA prior to migration South before 1800. I have much information on all these surnames...from MD to WVA to VA, PA, and all points South in my search to locate the ancestors of these lines. At this point I believe that much of this line went from MD to WVA (then VA) to Albemarle CO area of VA prior to settlement South after the Rev. War. Doris in VA

    3. Cindy, William Harrison Car(e)y might be listed in "Loyal Mountain Troopers - The Second And Third Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry In The Civil War" by Charles S. McCammon. Serendipitously, the book is published by the Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society and information about it is on the Blount County webpage. The book contains a listing of all of the soldiers in all the companies of the 2nd & 3rd Regiments of the Tenn Vol Cav. Unfortunately, there is no index of that listing and the names aren't listed alphabetically. Consequently, it would take quite a bit of time to look through the list. However, the text is VERY interesting. Good luck to you. Stan

    2. Cindy, In the Shadow of the Smokies is the Sevier County Cemetery book. I believe Townsebd is in Blount County. Your gggrandfather William Harrison Car(e)y, was he from Blount or Sevier? I dont believe it can be both. You also need to know the name he enlisted under. Do you know who he traveled with? Do you know where he lived after the war. 3. Can anyone give me any idea where to look. My gggrandfather William Harrison Car(e)y was in the Civil war. The "story" goes that he traveled from Blount/Sevier County by cover of night to join a union "group" in Kentucky. I bought the book TN's in the Civil War. He isn't there. I've looked at all the KY web pages I have found and he is not there. I sent to the NARA and they said he doesn't exist. He supposedly was a prisoner at Andersonville - no record of him there.. and so on and so on. He is burried in the Caylor (Baptist Church) Cemetary in Townsend and his head stone makes the notation of how much time he spent in service, but I can't find that page right now. It's noted in one of othe "cemetary books" from Sevier/Blount Co. I think In the Shadow of the Smokies. Now that I've rambled, can anyone help or give me another direction to go in? 1. Re: [TNBlount] Tennessee Cousins by Worth Ray
    2. Ginny - Please be extremely carefull in searching Worth Ray's book 'Tennessee Cousins" It is only good for a starting place in which to search. The DAR and other organizations will NOT recognize any documentation which has been taken from that book as there are too many errors including mixing families with the same names who are not related. However, with luck, this book can be helpful for a reference point from which to start. You money may not be wasted, it may be just what you need. 3. Thanks to the diligent transcription efforts of Judy Ingram, the Knox County TNGenWeb site has the 1792-1817 Knox County Brands Book (registration of animal markings) on-line. This book also contains the registrations for public water, saw, and grist mills. If your ancestry isn't in Knox County, don't despair. There are names from surrounding counties here as well! Remember that the earliest records are for the period before some of Knox County's "children" formed. And, don't forget that Knoxville became a center of commerce because of the rivers, meaning people came here from all over the area. So, your 3Xgreat-grampaw's brother might have moved "to town." http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/records/brandsbk.html
