We need to remember that when we communicate with email, what a word or idea means to one person might mean something totally different to someone else. I have been reading the messages concerning this subject based on a "Northern" and "white" person's point of view (despite extensive southern ancestry <grin>) and when someone mentioned "Southern" I thought of the whole southern culture - graciousness, charm, relaxed attitude, etc. On the other hand, one person here thought of "Southern" and it meant to them persons of color who came from the south. And another person thought of the "Southern" associations of the past to slavery and didn't want to be involved with that. This word, "Southern" obviously means different things to different people. Please, let us be gentle with one another. I am sure that no one meant to offend anyone. Denise
I think you spoke for the majority of us readers. Well said. My family is from Blount, Greene, Knox counties, etc. and western NC, like many people in east TN. Can someone help me with a lookup for my grandmother, Maude Gudger, born in Maryville in 1905. Father, Thomas Gudger. Her mother was a Broyles. Thanks. Marian Douglas -- moving tomorrow to Macedonia - oscemsk@queue.unet.com.mk (researching Love, Gudger, Broyles, Rice; and in middle TN, Douglas)
First, I would like to say this is a genealogical list. I found something that I thought was interesting, and is legit, so I thought I would pass it on. One day OUR descendants will be reveiwing our census records. To find out about us, and our heritage. Secondly, I do not appreciate the insult of the Aryan nations thing. Totally unfounded. What do they have to do with Southerners or our unique culture? NOTHING. They are found mainly in the NORTHWEST, NOT the South. Southerners are a people of COLOR. Please put on the census, what best describes your ethnicity, your culture, but don't basely insult me because I shared an idea that you disagree with. May GOD bless each of you!!! - --------------------------------------------- FREE! The World's Best Email Address @email.com Reserve your name now at http://www.email.com
I too, agree with Bob, we are one nation under God, I've had family fight in every battle, for their freedom & for mine. If you don't think this is recuiting ,names at least to contact later. Check out the aryan nation site. Be sure and take something for nausea before. They have their "identity preachers" too. Distorted views. I don't guess what i've written here is appropriate for a genealogy line, but if it alerts one person to be careful of whom they listen too. It's worth it. I believe instead of writing southerners,we should put God. That would sure tick some peole off. Right ? Jean
Sorry but just sounds like a front for the KKK.... The entire total seems inappropriate for a genealogical forum.
I totally agree. We need a unified census as we are all "one nation, under God" Cleona "Robert O. Howdy All, I recently came across the following, and feel that it is an excellent idea. Being that this is a list for genealogy, I felt that everyone here would have an appreciation for what is suggested, and understand its importance. If you really support this idea, please pass it along. Southerner 2000, A Census Project: The law of the land demands that a census be taken every ten years. The next census will be taken in the year 2000 and provides a prime opportunity to clearly state who we are as SOUTHERNERS. Southerner 2000 has established the goal of getting as many Southerners as possible to declare their Southern heritage on the United States Census for the year 2000. There is a section on the census forms which asks for information on your ethnic background. We need to not put down what country we think our ancestors came from to America, but honor our ancestors that carved out a nation here. If you believe in the ideas of self-determination, limited government and believe that the men and women of the Confederacy were right in defending these values as well as values such as honor, integrity and morality, then write in your ethnic background as being SOUTHERNER. Our Southern heritage is something to be proud of. Rather than hide from it, we embrace it and encourage ALL Southerners to revel in the good, which significantly out weighs any lapses that have been a part of the Southern culture. While recognizing that like any society the South has its flaws, we strongly believe that the Southern people, as a whole, have provided the world with some of the finest examples of manhood and womanhood to be found anywhere. The abilities of Southerners to overcome hardships and maintain a truly civilized and friendly society make us a shining example of what can be. The census forms come out in early March 2000 so we have several months to promote this effort. Working together we can spread the word and have a considerable percentage of Southerners declare there heritage on the 2000 census. Visit our website at www.southerner2000.org. If you wish to help this cause, pass the word along. Also consider contributing to this cause financially. If you are so inclined, mail your contributions to: Southerner 2000 P.O. Does anyone know any names, places, or history of Civil War hospitals in Tennessee? An older gentleman remembers an ancestor was at one. Info for "both sides" appreciated. Thanks in advance, M. Douglas
My grandmother, Maude Gudger, was born in Maryville in 1905. She had two brothers, one was Clifford. After her mother died (sometime perhaps between 1905 and 1910), her father, Thomas Gudger, left east Tennessee -- with his children -- and two of his brothers and their families, and moved west to Kansas, Washington state, and some went to Indiana, etc. Marian Douglas, Rome, Italy
Greetings, I am looking for information on my family (African American and mixed) who lived in Maryville. My grandmother was born there in 1905, Maude Gudger. She had two brothers, one was Clifford. Her mother died sometime, perhaps between 1905 and 1910. Her father, Thomas Gudger, left east Tennessee with two of his brothers and moved west. Thomas settled in Kansas. Another brother went to the state of Washington, and another must have been in the midwest, as we have family from that branch in Indiana. Other family names I know are Noah and Ben Gudger. Their father was Adolphus Gudger, from the Asheville area, over the mountains in NC. Could anyone help me find information? Thomas Gudger's wife's maiden name was Broyles. Thank you, Marian Douglas, Rome, Italy
Could someone on the list do a look-up for me? For my grandmother. Thank you in advance. Marian in Rome Birth info for GUDGER, Maude, born Maryville, TN, 1905 father: Thomas Gudger mother:?Anna Broyles Gudger?

Donald, I don't have a Mt.Pisgah Cemetery listed in my listing of Blount Cemeteries. Perhaps someone else knows where it might be. The Rudders are buried in the Sherwood Memorial Cemetery (p.234) This cemetery is on Grandview Dr. off Tuckaleechee Pike, 1 block off 73. The Rudders listed are L.Clifford L. Rudder 1917/1966 and Harold K. Rudder Cpl AAF WWII 12-24-1922/7-6-1959. Denise P.S. If you know where Mt. Psgah Cemetery is mail Donald directly at mailto:djmason1@bellsouth.net
Dear Friends, John DELZELL arrived in Blount County with his bride, Margaret McFerrin, shortly after 1785 when they were married in Greeneville, TN. They had four sons, William, Robert, DAvid and James who produced large families. They also had a daughter, Margaret who married into the Scroggs family. My ancestor, James Delzell married Elizabeth McCulley. I am particularly interested in where John Delzell came from. I know that he was buried in the Tedford-Hamill cemetery five miles south of Maryville. -- Best wishes, Bob Delzell 1345 DeSoto Ave., Burlingame, CA 94010 (650) 343-7339; rjdelzell@jps.net

There is a Greene County, TN list. I think it would be well worth your time to search there. I lived in Greeneville years ago, and the town was saturated with BROYLES. I also remember LOVES. Greeneville is a wonderful, little historic town with lots of history. ---------- >Some information may be in Greeneville, but I'm not sure if that county has >a mailing list (?)
