About 20 years ago, a family member who was researching Keelings stated that she had traced our lineage to Blount County, TN in 1796, but had "...lost him there." About 12 years ago, I just happened to pass through Maryville, stopped at the Blount County Courthouse, and asked employees there for help. My memory is clear that a record of a real estate transaction was found, probably in a book of deeds (a big, hardbound book with hand entries) for a Keeling, some time very close to 1796, but at the time, unfortunately, I was just a casual researcher, so did not obtain a copy or other solid evidence. Now another Keeling researcher assures me that there is no record of a Keeling in Blount County before about 1803. Can anyone reassure me that I have not been hallucinating for these past 12 years? Greetings: Samuel E. "Lige" HATCHER, Nancy J. HATCHER, and Sam A. GODFREY were neighbors and close friends of the James Clark CHANDLER (my great grandfather) family in Blount Co. TN near the end of the 19th century. James Clark died in 1899, and his wife Cassandra Gertrude (Orr) CHANDLER took the family to north central Texas the next year. About the same time, these HATCHERs and GODFREYs removed to Tarrant Co TX. Somewhere along the line Nancy and Sam married. While looking for some CHANDLER graves at the nearby Everman Cemetery, I came across the following markers: HATCHER Lillie Lee 1873-1953 ---------- Father Samuel E. 1866-1952 At Rest ---------- Martha C. 1859-1921 WALKER Orpha L. Jan. 23, 1893 Sept. 25, 1983 ------------- Married June 20, 1911 Together Forever ---------------- Rufus R. Dec. 9, 1890 Mar. 21, 1975 GODFREY Sam A. Mar. 17, 1865 May 4, 1938 ----------- Nancy J. Dec. 6, 1867 Feb. 24, 1940 GODFREY Herbert R. Dec. 5, 1893 May 2, 1960 ----------- Bessie J. June 1, 1894 Apr. 2, 1976 Orpha L. "Orphie" was the daughter of Lige HATCHER, and was a childhood playmate of my great aunt Eliza Ann CHANDLER McKnight in the Chandler Station area of Blount Co TN. Based upon very little research, I believe Samuel and Nancy to be children of Reuben Hatcher, who was son of Elijah, who was son of William, who was son of Edward. I hope this info is helpful to someone. If anyone would like an image file of any of these grave markers, just respond to me privately. Finally, I have two old pictures which I would like to get into the hands of a deserving HATCHER relative - 1) A picture of Martha & Lige HATCHER 2) A picture of Lige HATCHER I can forward scanned images of these photos to anyone who is interested. Again, just contact me privately. If you are interested in the original photos, please define for me your relationship to these HATCHERs, and the nature of your interest. Regards, Roy Chandler DFW TX

I am newly back on this list. I got a lot of help before and am back begging again. I am very interested in verifying information about my ancestors marriage supposedly found in 'Early East Tennessee Marriages', vol. 2 (Bridges, c. 1987 Byron Sistler & Co., Nashville, TN). I have been told the same wife married to two different husbands in this book, but with same wedding date. Mary Hackney, b. Sep 21 1805 Friendsville, Blount co, TN married, Aug 21 1823 Blount co, TN (1) Samuel Lee, b. Jul 31 1800 NC or (2) John A Lee Is there someone who has this book and would be willing to copy the information for me? Thank you very much. Sincerely, Darolyn in CA

SEATON EDGAR TEFFETELLER JAMES C. WALKER JOHN D. WALKER WALTER W. WALKER WILLIAM J. WEAGLEY PERRY J. WEAGLEY The men listed above fought in the Philippine Insurrection [1899-1901] with my grandfather William Thomas Jenkins. They were members of Company H, 47th U.S. Volunteers and September 23, 1999, will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of their journey from Maryville, Tennessee, to Camp Meade, Pennsylvania. By Christmas, 1899, they were in the Philippines. Im writing a biography of Tom Jenkins and Im trying to find as much information as possible about his two years in the Army. Maybe the boys from Blount County could help me. I already have copies of the Maryville Times from 1898 through 1902. Lt Goddard was the editor of the Times and was a frequent contributor to the newspaper while overseas. His descriptions of the Companys two year journey are priceless. Did your ancestor keep a diary? Did he write letters home? Is there a story about Grandpa and the Philippines that is part of your oral family history? E-mail me and lets talk. I really appreciate any help I can get. Thank you Jack Jay Jenkins

I recently posted a message with information about WW! Draft cards that I received from another list. Apparently the originator of the information received a lot of email blasting her for putting out false information. I am passing along a clarification letter she sent. There is a great deal of difference between 50 cents per copy and 10 dollars. Hope no one put a check in the mail! Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused any of you. Hester Janisch __________________________________________ World War I Draft Notices Last week I sent out a notice about the WW1 Draft cards being at the GA NARA branch and that the cards are found in state / county / surname order. I also said the cost of copies was 50 cents. I got bombarded with messages saying FALSE, FALSE, UNTRUE. All ranging from you "have to have draft board, name, age, etc etc" to "Totally FALSE cost". "UNTRUE Post" and "You are Misleading People". Jeez what a mess !! Makes me almost wish I had never posted the message. So let me clarify things here. 1st things 1st. I called the Archives yesterday and spoke with the manager of the textural department who is in charge of the WW1 registration / application cards. The first thing I asked was: What's the cost of ordering the cards via mail? He said the cost is $10.00 per card. Doesn't matter if you have 10 people all with the last surname in the same state/county they charge by the card. I asked why was I told the cost was 50 cents? After much discussion and tracking down the person I spoke with it turned out to be a large misunderstanding - the person knew I came to the archives all the time and thought I meant the cost to use the copier at the archives. So OK the cost is not 50 cents it's an outrageous $10.00. I have e-mailed one of the officers of the Friends of the Archives to see if they will be willing to do the searching and copying for less money. As soon as I get an answer I'll let everyone know. Now the 2nd thing. If you go to the NARA on-line site for GA and request the form to order WW1 Draft Cards you will receive a form that says you have to furnish all kinds of information. THIS IS A STANDARD NARA FORM TO ORDER CARDS FROM THE LDS FILM!!!!! If you are ordering a look-up from any NARA branch other than the East Pointe branch you must give this information because the copy will be made from the LDS microfilm which IS in state and then Draft Board order. It is not by state and then county. The NARA staff needs the information on the form to be able to find the card on the LDS film. HOWEVER - all you have to do is write a letter to the East Pointe branch and request a copy of - here we go - pay attention !!! ORIGINAL DRAFT CARD and give them the state, the county and the name and race of the individual you want. The only areas where this will not work is for the largest cities in the US such as New York, Chicago, LA, etc. then you have to have a street or the draft board. These cities have not been sorted into surname order yet. And ALL of the states are located at the GA NARA Branch - they have not been split and sent anywhere else. Now I hope that this helps straighten out the information that is flying fast and furious around the lists. If you forwarded my other messages somewhere will you please forward this one also? And when you forward this message please leave my name and e-mail address included. People need to write to me if they have questions not flood the lists with posts about "untruth" and "false information". It only causes confusion. Thanks a lot and hope I have helped clear up this mess.
