HI: I have a copy of the Benton Co. 1860 and 1870 census as well as the cemetery Book. Would be glad to do lookups. Betsy
Jackie: this is out of the benton co. book I have: The Methodists first sent their missionaries into West Tennessee in 1821. The first methodist congregation organized in the county was called Chapel Hill, but about 1860 was renamed Cowell's Chapel. It has maintained the same location since it was first organized in 1824. The congregation currentlly meets in a pretty brick church in Camden. About the same time that Cowell's Chapel was organized, the Methodists on Beaverdam Creek also organized their church, always known as the Flatwoods Church. Hope this helps, Betsy
For all those from Benton County that are on the TNBENTON-L list. Our Genealogical Society February meeting will not, repeat WILL NOT be the 25th of February as was previously announced last month. The Gates Foundation reps. will be installing new computers and the open house at the Library will be the afternoon of the 24th. The reps. will still be there and will give us a tour and explain about the new computers and software that will be installed that day. Anyone who has not attended our meetings, you are invited on the 24th of February at 6:00 p.m. in the Tennessee Room of the Benton County Library, 121 South Forrest Ave. Camden, TN. The open house will begin at 4:30 at Library. Every member that is on the TNBENTON-L list, please call someone that you know is not on the internet and change the date of the meeting. It will also be announced in the local paper. Thanks to all, Brenda Griffith
Hi Everybody!! I wanted to let you know that I have updated the Benton County web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnbenton/ I have added a new section to the web site called "Newspaper Columns" thanks to Nell Morisette. She has very graciously allowed for her articles to be reproduced and added to the web site for those that don't get "The Tribune" which is a local Benton County newspaper. They are really wonderful and full of Benton County history with many past residents mentioned. I think it's a great addition to the web site. I want to thank Doris Hightower for the idea in the first place and for scanning all of the articles and sending them to me. In addition to the new section, I have added two new biographies, one of Thomas Jefferson Melton (with photograph) and one of Joseph Townsend. (Thanks Mrs. Griffith & Mrs. Broxterman) If you have a biography you would like to have added to the web site, even if your ancestor is not listed on the page, please send it to me. I am not able to add GED files to the web site because of a Rootsweb rule, but if you have family sheets, I can add those if you would rather not write a formal-type biography. I have also added a picture of Calvin Austin Hall and Elizabeth West Cherry (Thanks Mrs. Lewis). I think out collection of photographs is one of the best!! If you would like to have any of yours included, you can send me a copy attached to an email or you can send a copy snail mail to: Alison Collignon 18310 Flint Hill Drive Katy, Texas 77449 Stop by the web site when you get a chance and take a look at new information and pictures!! Have a great week! Alison

Sorry to disappoint everyone on the Vol. I Benton County History Books, but they have been out of print for some time. IF! you can find on at an estate sale, they range anywhere from $150.00 and up. There will not be a reprint! Vol. II is still available as is the Benton County Cemetery Book, published in 1997. If any one is interested in the facts about the books and availability, you can e-mail me privately at <abgriff@aeneas.net>. The Benton County Genealogical Society is also looking for books to buy about the counties surrounding Benton Co., and also the bordering states of Tennessee. If anyone knows of any genealogical material pertaining to these areas, please let me know. If anyone needs look-up, I own both Vol. I and Vol. II, as well as the Cemetery Book. Will be happy to help. Thank you, Brenda Griffith President Benton County Genealogical Society
