Wow! Tennessee has an absolutely incredible amount of on-line information about poorhouses. I recently published a new website called The POORHOUSE STORY which is a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American Poorhouses at http://www.poorhousestory.com On our page where viewers can go to find poorhouse information by state http://www.poorhousestory.com/houses.htm we just sang your praises!! To see what we have listed so far for Tennessee ... just click on OTHER STATES to get a table and then click on TENNESSEE and you will be taken to http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_tennessee.htm Your comments are welcomed ... I am new at this web-publishing business <grin> ... and your comments are NEEDED. The site will only develop through the submissions of folks like you listers. Volunteers are also needed to transcribe existing information for posting. If you are interested in the historical or sociological implications of the poorhouse system, you will find TONS of info to explore. But if your interest is strictly genealogical, you may be most interested in the RECORDS page or the CEMETERY page -- as well as your own State page. Please do NOT respond to me through this list. (I would get FIRED and/or SUED by my ISP if I maintained subscriptions to all the e-mail lists to which I am posting this announcement!) Please respond off-list ... or I may miss your post. I am looking at a print out of the 1860 census Benton Co. TN. I am wondering several things. Listed in House # 451 is Andrew Jackson age 30 and wife Rebecca and children David, John, Susan Temperance and Lucinda Rasberry. Who was this Andrew's father? Is this Lucinda the daughter of the next man living in House #450 --- John Rasberry age 60 and family -- if so was Rebecca the wife of Andrew Jackson the daughter of John Rasberry? and living in House #452 is Joel Rushing age 26. Is there a connection between Jackson or Rasberry and Joel Rushing or his wife Lucy age 22 ? In house# 938 we have Robert Jackson age 38 and family and next to him in House #937 we have John H. Rasberry age 28 and family. I am curious about these folks and hope someone can help. I, for one committee member, was exhausted after 6 weeks of final preparations and had to come right home to finish preparations for a family reunion the following weekend. Had to rest a little. DCH was grand. I think that I speak for all who attended in saying that everyone had a good time. There were folks from TN, KY, AR, MS, OH, and as far away as Washington State.....to name a few. The attendance was about 60 which was a little down from the previous year....but the rest of us made up for those absent!!! There was laughing...story telling....kidding....visiting....exchanging information....making new friends.....renewing old friendships that were started last year.....it was like a great big family reunion. One first time attendee went away saying that she felt like she was leaving family! What a testimony! This year's workshops were a terrific addition....jan had EVERYONE acting really crazy with her Appalachian storytelling....Ranger Jobe came from Ft. Donelson and gave us alot of information on the battles of Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, Dover, and Johnsonville. He answered questions as long as they were asked.....M.T. talked to us about surviving in the 'old days'.....Mr. Buchanan taught us how log cabins were built and brought examples of some of the old tools.....Mattie Childers entertained us royally with her Appalachian stories...then jan finished up with a workshop for prospective list owners... Oh the food....that's another story....on Saturday night for the banquet we had southern-fried catfish, fried okra, white beans, slaw, potato salad, key-lime pie....it was all mouth-watering good.....don't think anyone went away hungry... As for the weather...it was HOT in Tennessee...but that is to be expected....with the exception of one short shower on Saturday morning, the skies were blue with not a cloud in sight....there was a pretty good breeze at night....I think that all who wanted to go cemetery-tromping got to without difficulty.... Most of the area historical/genealogical societies took part at one time or the other. All the area libraries were open and had volunteers on hand to help out. I think it would be fair to say that everyone found something....a new cousin/friend, a cemetery, a grave, a marriage certificate, a missing date....something to aid in their search..... Don Simmons was present with his books for the entire event. He was a virtual treasure trove of information for many lucky researchers. Well, I have rambled enough.....hope this helps....I'll be glad to attempt to answer any questions... Have a great weekend! I have just recently found that a Lewis D ALSOBROOK may have died in this county. Or he may have died there and his will recorded there. This happened in Cass Co, TX where he owned land and this land was given to a nephew. The will was dated and proved on 9 March 1888 in Benton Co, TN. Would someone contact me if they are willing to go to courthouse and find deeds, will, etc showing that Lewis D. owned land there? Lewis left most of his estate in TN to his wife Dollie. Bonds went to neices. I will gladly reimburse you for your time and photo cost. Thanks and good luck and good hunting in your researches....John Lowery -------------------------------- End of TNBENTON-D Digest V00 Issue #104 *************************************** From root@lists6.rootsweb.com Tue Aug 1 18:54:16 2000 Return-Path: <root@lists6.rootsweb.com> Received: from lists6.rootsweb.com (lists6.rootsweb.com [63.92.80.125]) by listsearches.rootsweb.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) with ESMTP id e721sGw01180 for <indexer@listsearches.rootsweb.com>; Tue, 1 Aug 2000 18:54:16 -0700 Received: (from root@localhost) by lists6.rootsweb.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) id e721sHP13585 for indexer@listsearches.rootsweb.com; Tue, 1 Aug 2000 18:54:17 -0700 Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 18:54:17 -0700 Message-Id: <200008020154.e721sHP13585@lists6.rootsweb.com> From: TNBENTON-D-request@rootsweb.com Subject: TNBENTON-D Digest V00 #104 X-Loop: TNBENTON-D@rootsweb.com X-Mailing-List: <TNBENTON-D@rootsweb.com> archive/volume00/104 Precedence: list MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/digest; boundary="----------------------------" To: TNBENTON-D@rootsweb.com Reply-To: TNBENTON-L@rootsweb.com ------------------------------ Content-Type: text/plain TNBENTON-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 104 Today's Topics: #1 [TNBENTON] ALSBROOK, Lewis D.
