The 1860 Bedford County census appears to be confusing to most people. There were two different census takers for the whole county. It appears the Goverment furnished some type ledger with stamped number pages (I call these the hard page numbers) One page had a number, the other was side was not stamped. Therefore most of us call it A & B page. According to my cheat sheet there are 277 pages to the 1860 Bedford County Census (or 554 pages). According to my notes there were 2,226 house holds. When the census takers went door to door, and recorded the families they ASSIGNED each house a house number, and also numbered their pages. At some point the census taker did not "leave enough pages" or left out some families and had to go back and add them. It appears he just pulled pages in the back of the ledger. Therefore when looking at the 1860 census, I have found it best to look at the House hold numbers and always try to allign them up. This is only the head of households mainly (In some house holds I added the whole family). If there was another person with a different last name.. I put the last name in "CAPITAL LETTERS".
