As Pat Munroe pointed out in her recent posting to the Bedford TN list, both Fergus Hall and some other Halls in early Bedford County both arrived from Sumner County around 1812 or 1813. These other Halls include the James and David Hall who acquired land from Ezekiel Billington in this deed: Bedford County TN Deeds, Book E, page 262 Ezekiel Billington to John and David Hall, 30 December 1813; Ezekiel Billington of BCT to John and David Hall of Sumner County TN; $400 for "...a certain tract or parcel of land containing 238 acres be the same more or less in Bedford County on the north side of Duck R. being part of a 1500 acre tract granted to George Davidson. Beginning at John Warner's northeast corner dogwood and runs north 164 poles to an elm and chinquapin oak thence west 260 poles to a stake in mulberry thence south 130 [poles] to a Hickory thence east 135 poles to a mulberry thence south 34 poles to a black gum, John Warner's northwest corner, thence east to the beginning..."; witness: James Billington, Absolom Fry The land in the above deed would today be in Marshall County but was then in Bedford County. The location of the 1500 acre tract granted to George Davidson was just W of Spring Creek and can be seen on this map: http://www.tngenweb.org/marshall/maps/landgrantmap2.html Other deeds and surveys that I posted a few weeks ago to the Bedford TN list describe other Hall and Billington tracts all near Spring Creek and N of Duck River. The deed that associates Fergus Hall with Sumner County is this one: Bedford County TN Deeds, Book D, Page 334 Fergus Hall to Patton & Erwin, 14 December 1812; Patton & Erwin of Buncombe, NC to Fergus Hall of Sumner, TN; $800 for 450 acres on the S fork of Duck River, part of grant #223 [in the Three Forks area]; no abutters listed; witness: H. Grove, John Ewell Maybe someone on the list knows more about where this land of Fergus Hall was located. I do know that Grant 223's NW corner was just across from the mouth of the Wartrace Fork, where it enters the Garrison Fork (called the Middle Fork in early surveys). Grant 223 was roughly 2.8 miles square with its sides running roughly in the cardinal directions (N, S, E, and W) and it went far enough South to cross Thompson's Creek (twice) and far enough East so that its Southern boundary crossed Shipman's Creek. Unfortunately the deed in Book D, Page 334 offers few clues to the actual location of the land other than it was "on the South Fork of Duck River. Considering the area included in Grant #223, this places the land somewhere from about 3/4 miles downstream of where the Garrison Fork enters Duck River to somewhere between where Russell Branch and Doddy Creek join Duck River.
