Hi Alicia, You mentioned the Stephens line. I too have Stephens. My ggg-grandfather was Eli Stephens. According to the earlier Census Records he was born 1808. I have never figured out WHO his father was. The old John Stephens that came to Bedford County (1876 - 1831) is the closest I can find. This John Stephens Jr was married two times. Gaskey Hartfield and Martha Ann Gulley. There is a bible record for this family. There is also an estate settlement where there is an argument over the division of the estate that is mentioned in a book by Helen and Tim Marsh. There is a James (Elijah?) Stephens born 1818 according to the bible records; However, I know my Eli was born before that because of the age of his children. I would love to see the actual bible, I wonder if it was transcribed wrong. There is an Eli Stephens who lived in Cannon County, and owned part of the square (This was in 1840). In 1850 my Eli was suppositly living in Blount County, ALABAMA, with wife Zubia. I find Eli again in 1870 in Bedford County with James Andrew Allen and (Nancy?) Mary Allen (who I believe is his daughter). There is a Sarah Posey who he applied for a marriage license, and then the license was returned, then July 30, 1870 Eli applies for a marriage license to Katie Posey. The last documented proof I have of Eli Stephens is his divorce decree from Katie Posey in 1883. 1870 Bedford county - Dist 10, pg 279/B James Allen age 25 Mary Allen age 30 (Ala) James Allen age 11 Martha Allen age 3 Ely Stephens age 52 (TN) married in July??? is this "Susan" "Katie" Posey? Sarah Stephens age 17 1880 Bedford County - Dist 21, page 4 (sister book pg 73) HH 28 Eli Stephens age 62 (works in a stove factory) (AL AL AL) Feby ? age 26 (US) James age 6 Mattie age 4 John age 2 Eli had a son named Noah Stephens he was born around 1848 - 1849 according to the Blount County Ala Census. This is my gg-grandfather. I have found his marriage license to Martha Jane ______ in 1866. Family lore says her name is Martha Jane Allen.. but the marriage license says Martha Shoffner on one side, and Martha Vincent on the other side... Suppositly Martha Stephens was the person who executed Eli's estate, but I have never found this paper.
