    2. Shelbyville Gazette - Jan 8, 1931, page 2 John B. Russ Though the kindness of our good friend, Mrs. J.F. Boyd, we have received a clipping for the Omaha Bee of Nebraska, which mentioned a former citizen of our town. The Mr.. Russ spoken of was a brother of the late Mr.. Lee H. Russ of this place and we expect he had something to do with the birth of the Gazette in 1873. Our older citizens may remember him. Here is what the Bee says: " Crofton's only civil war veteran John B. Russ was a member of the confederate army. One of the oldest residents of the northeastern Nebraska. Mr.. Russ. who has passed his 90th birthday, still enjoys good health. He makes his home with his son in law, Frank Holder, Livestock dealer. "Born in Shelbyville, Tennessee., Mr.. Russ in 1862 enlisted as a confederate under Gen N.B. Forrest. On Christmas Eve, 1864 he and several companions became separated form a skirmish party and were taken prisoners. They were interned at Camp Chase, Ohio where they remained until May 14, 1865. After his discharge Mr. Russ returned to Shelbyville and was employed there five years as a printer. "Later he engaged in railroading and in this work traveled through most of Kansas and Texas. He has been a resident of Crofton for a number of years, coming here because of his advanced age.
