When an unmarried woman had a child, the county required assurance from someone, usually the father, that the child would not become dependent on the county for support. In this case, the father, backed by Nancy O'Neal, posted the bond. It would appear that the father did not have a lot of money and Nancy O'Neal was a friend or relative who was "well off."
