Hi Shirley, I don't have a clue about the origin of the name. I lean toward it being related to abstinence from alcohol. Most all churches had a Temperance Society in olden times. This lady was Temperance Robards Bledsoe, wife of Henry Bledsoe a brother of my gg-grandfather, Aaron Bledsoe. John

My husband's great-grandmother was a Bledsoe from Missouri. I have a great deal of information about the Bledsoes in a three-volume self-published genealogy by a Bledsoe researcher, Banks McLaurin, Jr. I can do a lookup if you'd like. (I do find Henry Bledsoe and Temperance Robards Bledsoe in Volume 3 of this work, by the way.)
