No- I wasn't able to find him in 1880 either, at least that I could positively identify as him (ie with a brother John M. who would have been 16 or 17 in 1880). I did find in the 1870 Census for Rutherford a J.L. Phillips, 33, with wife Jimmie sp?, 28, and sons Charles 9 and John 7. This family is not in the 1880 Census for Rutherford but did find a John L. Philips, 42 with wife, Verginie C. ,age 37 and Children John C. age 17 and dau. Kate, age 1 In Gibson Co. Have been told by some TN researchers that there was a migration of several Rutherford families to Gibson Co. about that time so possibly could be the same ones. The initial C is wrong for John but almost every Census I have looked at tI find miss spellings of names and or initials. Jimmie could have easily been a nickname for Verginie or Virginia. Charles would have been 19 at the time and may have been out on his own. Found a marriage of a C.W. Phillips and an E.A. Tollivar n Humphrey Co. in 1883 and there was a Charles Philups, (census spelling), age listed as 18, in Humphrey Co. in 1880 Census working on the farm of a family named Cooley. With all the various spellings and ancestors with wanderlust I have had a heck of a time trying to track them down. Thnx for your help. Rex Phillips- Dallas
