Does anyone have any info on why so many Bedford County families migrated in the 1870's/1880"s from Bedford county to Arkansas? My Joseph Y Smith left his family sometime after 1870 census and went to Craighead County, Bono/Jonesboro, Arkansas with a few other family members where he married c 1877 and had a child per the 1880 census for Craighead County. I have always wondered what was the attraction for him to leave his family and go to Arkansas and have just noticed recently there seems to be alot of Bedford County families who did the same around the same time period. Also would like any info on the Smith family from the Hall's Mills area. Joseph Yarbrough Smith was born to John and Martha Smith c 1843 in Tn. John died before 1850 as Martha is listed as a widow on the 1850 Bedford County census. Any info would be helpful!
HELLLLLLOOOOOO. Oh, I am excited or can you tell. Your Joseph must be my Great Great Great Grandfather's brother. he was George Smith, born 1831. He moved to Ark in about 1893-1895 going first to Washington County all the way up in the NW corner to Springdale area then moved back down to the Middle of the state to De View in Woodruff County. Have been looking for info on John and his wife for years - will trade info. I used to wonder about that, too. However, this was a new country and each time new areas were opened up (taken from the Indians), these people would go for hopes of cheap land and a better life. I think they often found it wasn't a better life, but were probably too broke to return. All my grandfather's brothers went west and did, apparently, do quite well. He stayed in Bedford County.
