We have completed proofreading and expanding the Index to the Bedford County, Tennessee, Circuit Court Minutes 1859 - 1860, approximately doubling its size because we went into the minutes themselves to extract list of names only recorded as "et al." in the index. Charles Reeves has posted this update to: http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/Circuit_minutes/CCC_Index.htm In addition, the index to that volume also contains the index to the first 100 pages or so of the next volume (Aug 1859 - Aug 1860), so we have moved that part of the index into the next volume index and merged it in and it is now posted also. (The clerk continued the index to the "1859 - 1860" volume to the end of the court term even after the minutes themselves had run over into the next book, "Aug 1859 - Aug 1860".) We are working on indices to County Court Records now, finishing up, Volume B, 5 March 1866 - 12 May 1869. There is only a partial index posted right now to the A's and some of the C's in this volume. It will take several more weeks to complete this index. Once this is finished, all the indices to County Court minutes from the earliest surviving volume that starts on 2 October 1848 up to 12 May 1869 will have been transcribed and posted. Steve

We have just completed the Index to the Bedford County, Tennessee, Circuit Court Minutes 1859 - 1860 and Charles Reeves has posted this to: http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/Circuit_minutes/CCC_Index.htm There are some interesting things in these minutes that you do not normally find in Circuit Court minutes, including a lot of "equity" matters. Some examples: 1) There are many examples of divisions of estates and exparte petitions related to the sale of property held jointly in an estate. On example is page 127, an exparte petition to sell land with a list of the "heirs at law of Edward Johnson, deceased": "John T. Johnson, Minerva A. Johnson, Louisa Ann who has intermarried with James Price, Isabelle J. Johnson, George W. Johnson, Benjamin F. Johnson, Sarah M. Johnson, David L. Johnson, and Mary H. Johnson..." 2) There are several divorce decrees such as: Muse, Malissa P. vs. James B. Muse, pages 307, 308, 388 3) There are several naturalization petitions in this volume (and elsewhere in Circuit Court minutes.) These often contain a lot of detail that is hard to obtain elsewhere. For example, pages 6 and 7 are a naturalization petition from Selig Florsheim that contains details such as: - he entered the United States in August 1853 through the port of Baltimore, Maryland when he was 17 years old - he renounces any allegiance he has to Louis, the Grand Duke of the Dukedom of Hesse, Darmsted, "whereof of before he was a citizen and subject" - he was born a subject of said Dukedom on the 27th day of February, 1836 Steve
We just discovered that we had never posted the Index to the Bedford County, Tennessee, Circuit Court Minutes 1858 - 1859. This one is still in rough form and contains some errors plus the "et al."s are not yet expanded into lists of names where possible. Since most of the information is correct, we decided to go ahead and post the preliminary form and will post an corrected version, probably by early next week. Charles Reeves has posted this to: http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/Circuit_minutes/CCC_Index.htm Steve

We have just finished transcribing the index contained in the Bedford County, Tennessee Circuit Court Minutes, 1864 - 1865. Charles Reeves has added these to the Bedford, TN GenWeb pages: http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/Circuit_minutes/CCC_Index.htm The next index that we will finish is Circuit Court Minutes, 1859 - 1860. This should be posted within a few days. This is the last of the indexed volumes of Circuit Court Minutes from 1840 - 1871 whose index we have transcribed. The following volumes contain no indices: Circuit Court Enrollments 1861 - 1867 Circuit Court Minutes 1865 - 1867 Circuit Court Minutes 1867 - 1869 Circuit Court Minutes 1869 - 1871 We will eventually read through these four volumes page by page and prepare indices for them, however we are turning our attention to completing those few volumes of Chancery Court and County Court minutes whose indices we have not yet finished.

The youngest, Van Buren was My husbands father. We think his father was Jonathan Merrell He is the only one of the many Merrells at that time in Lincoln Co with the right mix of children in the census but the 1840 census in Bedfford Co showed a Jonathan Merrett but no Merrell Jonathan was born in 1796 in Rowan Co NC and died in Lincoln Co in 1850. He was married to Mary Polly either Chapman or Cooper. I have seen both But in the 1850 Giles Co census Barney was with his mother Mary but no father. Anderson in the Bradley Gambill book and here is some of what I found. James H. Gambill, son of Bradley Gambill, was named in his father's will. He married 9 Feb 1803 in Davidson County to Esther Bidwell. In 1816 he was living in Williamson Co, TN and by 1820 he had removed to Wayne County, TN. Goodspeed's History of Wayne County, page 764, lists James H. Gambill and Timothy Gambill as some of the first settlers. Timothy Gambill may have been a son of James. There is no further information on James in the book. However, there is Sarah Gambill (born 14 June 1815) who is the daughter of Benjamin Gambill, also a son of Bradley Gambill. She married a Mr. Yarborough. Another daughter was Eliza Jane Gambill (born 25 Sept 1823), declared by the court of Bedford County to be insane. She made her home with her sister, Permelia Gambill Anderson, in Marshall County. Permelia Gambill (born 1 Nov 1808) married Amzi Anderson. So, it appears there is are connections between Gambills and Andersons I also looked for the name James C. Anderson that you asked about. I found a James C. Anderson that married a Susan Nance 1 Dec 1847 in Bedford County. Susan Nance was the daughter of Ann Gambill (born 24 Dec 1796 Davidson County TN, died 28 Dec 1836 Bedford County TN), daughter of Bradley Gambill. Ann Gambill married John Nance (born 4 Mar 1798 TN, died 7 Feb 1873 Bedford County TN) John Nance was the son of Bird Nance and Polly Hannah. Bird Nance was a friend of Bradley Gambill and a witness to his will. So, that is probably where your Bird name comes from. Under the information for Susan Nance it says that she was born 16 Sept 1822 TN, died 26 Jane 1880 Craighead Co, AR. James Campbell Anderson (born 12 Dec 1824 Bedford Co, TN, died 15 Feb 1906 Craighead Co, AR) was the son of Richard Anderson and Margaret Campbell. Susan and her husband moved to Craighead Co with the Gambill brothers in 1858. Richard Anderson was a captain in the Civil War. James C also served as a lieutenant. I hope this information helps you sort out your particular Sarah Ann Gambill. She may be a daughter of James H. Gambill and a good place to look would be either Williamson or Wayne County.
