Thanks, interesting that Thomas and Famey Cheatham were Presbyterian. My Rice's back in Virginia were also Presbyterian. Francis Rice was sexton of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Prince Edward Co. Virginia sometime between 1754 and 1770. I have seen info on Jonatahan Cheatham. Seems he had a daughter, Mary, who married Joseph Rice Jr. OR Joseph Rice had a daughter Mary who married Jonathan Cheatham. Don't recall which, but these folks were in Halifax County in the 1790's. I don't remember the particulars, but I found this interesting. Unfortunately, this wasn't my particular Rice family. Joseph Sr. died P.E. County around 1765 and was a brother to Matthew Sr. - neither man related to my Francis Rice who was also in Henrico by 1731 through 1739, then Amelia 1739 - 1754, then 1754 until his death by 1790. Arline Sudberry <asudberry@worldnet.att.net> wrote: I found an email a Cheatham researcher sent to me a few years back. This is what he said: "You mentioned the Pucketts. VA, William Puckett gave 300 acres in Luneburg Co. to his son-in-law Robert Cheatham (of Prince Edward Co. VA) The 1769 tithe list of Lunenburg Co. shows William Puckett Sr., William Puckett Jr., Robert Cherton (Cheatham), & Anthony Pucket residing in Thomas Winn's district. Robert had married William Puckett Sr.'s dau. France "Francy" Puckett. By 1800 Robert & Frances Cheatham had moved to Abbeville Co. SC. I don't have any evidence to prove they had a son William. There are also other Puckett connections to the Cheathams, all relating to the family of Robert's presumed grandfather Jonathan Cheatham (who died 1759 in Prince Edward Co. VA). It's possible that your William might have come connection to one of Jonathan's descendants." I will send the email address to you for the man who gave the above information to me. I don't know if it is still valid or not, because it's been a long time. But he might be able to help you with the Puckett's if you can locate him. His "your William" refers to William Cheatham b. 1770-1780 m. Mary Franklin. I found somewhere, but forgot to write the source, so it's probably unreliable: Jonathan Cheatham b. 1669 d. 1759 m. Betsy ?. They had a son: Robert Cheatham who died 1810 married Frances Puckett who died 1812. They had a daughter Mary Elizabeth b. 1768 who married Abraham Chaney. Thanks Steve! Bill Cheatham sent me info on Thomas Cheatham and his siblings. I was excited to see the connection to Gov. Newton Cannon! I'm still of the opinion these Cheathams are closely tied to whomever the Mr. Cheatham was that Molly Rice married probably 1760-1780 time frame. I have to go to Shelbyville tomorrow so if I have time, I'll try to go by the courthouse and look these up. Steve Carson <carson@gscassociates.com> wrote: Willie: 1) In the Nov 1858 County Court minutes (Vol 3, page 12) the will is proven and ordered recorded, but the text is not in the court minutes. Also in the same minute book there is a record on page 204 where the court clerk sues the executor because he has not yet paid court costs. 2) Circuit Court minutes Vol "1858 - 1859" p 559 has a record where the Executor B. F. Duggan sued three people. It is short and does not contain the will either. 3) There is a long record of a Chancery Court case involving the estate of Thomas Cheatham in Chancery Court Enrollment docket Vol "1856 1854 1859", pages 158 - 182. It is full of details about the family and their property. If this record contains a copy of the will itself, I do not see it. I know that the abstract by the Marshes calls this the "Will of Thomas Cheatham", but that appears to be incorrect, however the bill, cross-bill, and answers do provide complete lists of the heirs and together have far more detail that a will alone would provide. Willie: 1) In the Nov 1858 County Court minutes (Vol 3, page 12) the will is proven and ordered recorded, but the text is not in the court minutes. Steve
More information about Thomas Cheatham can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/5876/wtcheathamfile.html
I found an email a Cheatham researcher sent to me a few years back. This is what he said: "You mentioned the Pucketts. This family is also closely assiciated with the fmaily of Robert Cheatham in VA. In 1769 in Luneburg Co. I don't have anything else on this family. Arline ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. D. Cool! I have Elizabeth C. Puckett's father was Caswell Puckett and grandfather as Charles Puckett who married Elizabeth Akin in Campbell County, Va around 1802. Charles Puckett's mother was Elizabeth Rice, sister of Molly Rice who married a Cheatham. For some reason, I still think I"m looking at part of Molly (Rice) Cheatham's family here, though some think William was the son of a Samuel Cheatham in Lunenburg co. VA. I haven't seen any definitive proof of this though, as yet. Thanks, Will Arline Sudberry <asudberry@worldnet.att.net> wrote: Yes, Permelia Cheatham, daughter of William Cheatham was the sister of Thomas b. Dec. 22, 1792. Permelia was born 1793 and d. 1880. Along with William Cheatham Gillespie, they also had Nancy Drucella, Phebe Ann, and James J. Gillespie. Nancy Drucella b. May 19, 1828 was my ancestor. She married Robert Drury King on Feb. 26, 1846. Nancy Drucella and Robert Drury King lived on Fruit Valley Rd. in Bedford County, were members of the Kingdom Church, and are buried in the King Family Cemetery on Fruit Valley Road. >From an article compiled by Arline Sudberry from information by various people in "Kingdom Church History Vol. II. I am not entirely sure, but I do know a John Nash was later in Amelia/Prince Edward County near Francis Rice after 1740. The John Nash who bough Francis's Swift Creek property in Henrico/Chesterfield Co. in 1734 was Sheriff at the time. Did Bradley Gambill (I assume "Gambrell" is another version of this name) have a son or grandson named Henry Gambill/Gambrell born about 1765 who went to Hanover County area? We have a Henry Gambrill in White County who's wife was Abby Maynard. Couple of Henry's kids married into family of William B. Rice, Francis's grandson in White County, TN. There are also a LOT of the Nash family in Putnam County and White County. Yes, Permelia Cheatham, daughter of William Cheatham was the sister of Thomas b. Dec. 22, 1792. Permelia was born 1793 and d. 1880. She married John William Gillespie Aug. 28, 1827. They are both buried in the White Cemetery in Rutherford Co. II. "The brother of Nancy Drucella Gillespie King was William Cheatham Gillespie who was married to Elizabeth C. Puckett. William Cheatham Gillespie developed pneumonia and died in Nov. 1874 while working on Kingdom Church. The congregation was trying to build back the church after it had been burned by Union Soldiers in the Civil War. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth and her children lived in and ran the toll gate house next to Mack Motes place on Highway 41A between Rover and Eagleville." ----- Original Message ----- From: "W.
