    3. Great! I'm glad it helped. I've often thought that such a list would be helpful, but until I saw your post, I hadn't tried to find one. Carolyn, thanks so much for that link, it did indeed provide me with great information. It does indeed show a smallpox epidemic in the winter of 1882-1883 in the area, which is one of 2 epidemics I had suspected. After checking further on that information found there, it does appear that there were hundreds of child deaths from Smallpox in Bedford Co. during the last 3 months of 1882 especially, with a few more dozen in January 1883. I'd say I've found my answer. Thanks again :) Dawn -----Original Message----- From: tnbedfor-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnbedfor-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Carolyn Whittenburg Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2008 8:10 AM To: tnbedfor@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] 1882 - Was there an epidemic or widespread illnessinBedford Co? Dawn, Here's an interesting website with a list of many Tennessee disasters listed by the year/years in which they occurred. http://www.geocities.com/mcminncountytennessee/sometndisaster.html There was a smallpox epidemic in eastern TN during the winter of 1882-83. It could have been more widespread than east TN though. A google search for epidemics in TN in 1882 leads to many references of people dying within a few years before and after 1882 from the yellow fever epidemic of 1878. Google books shows a history of Alfred Greeley Alexander, whose children were born between 1868 and 1885. Three of his children were said to have died in "a yellow fever epidemic in Bedford Co., TN." It doesn't say what year his children died, but it would be have to be within a few years of 1882--and within range of the yellow fever epidemic of 1878! Hope this helps! That's always a possibility, naturally. But the reason I'm wondering particularly if it was some type of epidemic, such as influenza, smallpox, cholera, etc., is because whatever it was seemed to come on fairly quickly and kill just as quickly, and seemed particularly lethal to smaller children, which is usually not indicative of tuberculosis/consumption. I have notations and indications on most of the children I mentioned in my original post that showed they were healthy and normal enough up to at least the end of the summer of 1882, but then they were dead by the end of the year (notations found in family letters of the time which referred to a family event during that summer). Also, 3 of these families had physicians in the family (the fathers and 1 uncle), so I would assume their general health was maintained well enough. So it just seems that whatever killed all these children during October/November/December 1882 must have come on quickly and was not lethal to the adults in the families. That's why I'm wondering about a possible epidemic in the area. It's very curious. 3. I would like someone to tell me about the history of Puncheon Camp near Bell Buckle, TN in Bedford Co. My father (William Parks Smith) lived there when a young child, and he has a baby brother buried (1918) at the Stephenson Cemetery. Also, I would like to know the history of Webb's Jungle, nearby. 3. If I transcribed this... I would SWAG it at AMELINE C. Meadows (I know it is supposed to be Emeline C. Meadows, but it looks more like an "A") Father; JOHN DAMRON (Looks like they started to write TENNESSEE and then wrote over it) and Mother; OLLIE BROWN or ALLIE BROWN or possible ALBIE BROWN She is buried at Cumberland (Is this a cemetery and is there a stone?) Looks like G.W. Meadows (or S.W. Meadows) gave the information lived in Lima(?) Oklahoma She died of Toxicima of the stomack and OLD AGE The death certificate is signed by J.A. Collins (and if you will look the A looks just like the MOTHERS name; However, if I looked at a few more certificates with the same writing, I would be more sure.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kent" <cdr2002@mchsi.com> To: <tnbedfor@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2008 2:40 PM Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] Death Certificate of Emily Meadows > The first letter in John's last name is T it looks just like the T in Tenn > I think mother's name starts with D > > Kent > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Steve Carson" <carson@gscassociates.com> > To: <tnbedfor@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2008 10:40 AM > Subject: [TNBEDFOR] Death Certificate of Emily Meadows > > >>A copy of the death certificate of Emily Meadows is posted at: >> >> http://www.gscassociates.com/Emily%20Meadows%20DC.jpg >> >> Mary Lou Sipherd could use help figuring out the "name of father" and >> "maiden name of mother" - they are overwritten and hard to decipher. >> >> At 01:02 AM 4/24/2008, you wrote: >>>----- Original Message ----- >>>From: "Mary Lou Sipherd" <mls32@verizon.net> >>>To: <tnbedfor@rootsweb.com> >>>Sent: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 11:28 PM >>>Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] Darnell's >>> >>> >>> > Sorry so long in getting back to you. 3. Great idea Teresa! I'm thinking some folks came and cleaned up this cemetery back in the late '70's or early '80's. I'd like to find photos from then and/or from even earlier times. I've found letters in my moms things from a lady in CO. sent to my mother that did come here to help clean it up. Her mother was an Adkinson. Its on private property now and I've heard cows got in there once and it was on the news. I didn't know all that. But when I do "a drive by" its just grown up and pitiful looking. Can't tell its a cemetery. I think chain saws would need to be involved..... 3. Hi Betty, I've not run into any Pylants yet. The Phelps' I married into are from TX. They went back and forth from TX to TN alot. They lived up on Chestnut Ridge. He married a Powell, who leads into Warren and Bartlets and others. This leads into Moore and Lincoln Counties. Very interesting but LOTS of family branches to "cover". 1. [TNBEDFOR] was Julia A (Haynes) Crick - now Mangum/Mangrum
    2. LaVerne & Chuck
    3. My GreatGrandfather was the eldest child of Greenberry (Green B.) and Nancy Elizabeth Crick and I have found his name listed in various ways. I finally settled on James George 'Jim' Mangum because my Father listed him as Jim Mangum on my Grandmother's Death Certificate. I have (10) children for Green B Mangum and Nancy Elizabeth Crick. First four are same as yours, James George, Willie Thomas, William J., Susan C, with the addition of Elizabeth A 'Lizzie', Einnus (Minus?) S, Joseph Christopher, Amanda J, Martha C, and Pauline Evergreen. I haven't been able to tie-in Rebeckah Jane Mangrum b.1823/1826 in NC (married to James G Crick) to my Mangum/Mangrums; but, I like the idea that she could be a sister to Green B. b.abt 1817 in TN (?) In 9/9/2005, Richard A.Crick Jr. of Birmingham,AL (a descendant of John G. Crick) sent me an email stating the estate records of John G Crick were taken care of by his brother-in-law Kinion Carlton who was married to Francis Crick, (sister of John G and James G) and also by Green B Mangum. Green and Kinion were co-administrators. He also stated that James G. Mangum was summoned to testify at one point in Frankllin Co TN records. I don't have copies of the estate records mentioned; but, it does seem to tie in with your reference to Green B being a grantee on a deed with Kinion Carlton and and John G Crick. At this point, I think we might be "double" cousins?? on the Mangum/Mangrum and Crick lines. Do you have any more goodies? Thanks, LaVerne Teresa Elliott <Cheasa@bellsouth.net> wrote: I have Green B. Mangrum who married Nancy E. Unknown, pretty sure this could be your Greenberry. If it is, then my husband's line just quit branching. <G> The children I have are George J., Willie T., William J. and Susan C. Our line is George Crick and Sally Glass. Green B. was a grantee on a deed with Kinion Carlton (my line) and John G. Creek, (Jeff's). I haven't worked on this line much. Jeff's line is Rebeckah Mangrum who married James G. Crick. I think she could be a sister (daughter?) to Green B. Mangrum. My Grandmother is Sarah "Sallie" Lucinda Mangum. She is daughter of James George Mangum and Rebecca Catherine Riddle. Her grandparents were Greenberry Mangum and Nancy Elizabeth Crick. We cannot go back any farther with Greenberry Mangum; but Nancy Elizabeth Crick is daughter of George Washington Crick, b. 1792 in Newbury Co, SC, and Sarah "Sally" Glass, b.1786, VA, d. 1860/1862, Franklin Co, TN. My grandmother "Sallie" Mangum was b.3/22/1870, in Tullahoma, Franklin Co, TN, died 5/21/1951 in our home of Wichita Falls TX. 3. Hello, Maybe the disease was smallpox. There's a book called Pox Americana, The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82 by Elizabeth Anne Fenn with an extensive review by Christie Carrico, PhD at http://molinterv.aspetjournals.org/cgi/content/full/3/6/344 Carrico says that the key to the spread of the disease was a 12-day incubation period in which someone who was infected appeared healthy but was contagious. The map she shows of the spread of the disease does not pinpoint middle Tennessee as a hot spot though. Joan On May 1, 2008, at 12:01 AM, tnbedfor-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > 3.
