    3. The name Pleasant is a family surname which was probably passed on as a given name. The Pleasant family was common in Virginia and you may find it in early NC. I think they were probably Quakers. This may be two clues for your research. Good Luck. 3. Betty, (and anyone else interested) I am not really researching Snellings but your post hit home with me. I have never ran across anyone who was researching the Snelling family but if you are, there is something that I'd like to ask you. My gr-gr-grandmother was Louisa Jane Riley; she married William Reed, a son of Robert and Elizabeth Reed. I know that they married in Branchville and I think her family may have been living there at the time. William and Louisa had about 5 or 6 children, among them the oldest was my gr-grandfather George Washington Reed. Sometime in the 1850's when everybody seemed to be going to TX, William abandoned his family and went to TX to join three of his brothers who were already there. He went to war for TX and died near his TX home on the way back after Lee's surrender. His brothers could never get a word out of him about why he left his wife and family and they never saw him again. There was talk among his nephews in TX that he had taken a Cherokee wife out west but no confirmation. George being his oldest son took responsibility for his mother and siblings and was the head of his family in the absence of a father. It is said that Louisa died at or near Normandy and I always wondered if Riley's Creek might have gotten it's name from her family. I apologize for taking so long to get to the Snelling thing but finally, here it is: Louisa Jane Riley Reed is buried in the Mt. Olivet Methodist Cemetery off the Wartrace Pike near some Snellings. I always figured maybe one of her sisters might have married a Snelling. I feel that another sister of hers may have married a Chandler as George Reed corresponded with a cousin who signed himself A.J. Chandler, from Woodville AL. A.J. Chandler spoke of one of his sisters marrying a Frazier and living at Scottsboro AL. Do you have any idea why Louisa Jane Riley Reed would be buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery near the Snellings? Does any of this ring a bell? Sorry to broadside you like this but your mention of Snellings triggered an avalanche! 3. Have you been to Bedford County before, doing research? It is a great area to do genealogy research in. I have been coming here for 30 years now and loved it so much I relocated here and opened a business. We have a Best Western hotel and a Super 8 I believe it is. There are some Bed and Breakfasts and also some independently owned hotels available but the Best Western is the nicest of course and has a good breakfast included in their rate. They do offer the typical discount rates when available. Be sure to contact them ASAP as they do book up since they are so nice. I own the GROCERY STORE ON THE SQUARE in "Uptown Shelbyville" directly across the street from our beautiful courthouse. If you are needing any deed or marriage records they are quite helpful here in Bedford County. Also, we have an archive area in the courthouse vault that contains very old papers and they are only open on WEDNESDAY mornings, 8 AM - 12 Noon. Our Shelbyville / Bedford County library has a GREAT genealogy area and lots of records have been documented in books, many of which they have. Not knowing the time frame you are looking for or what other info you may want to research, I can't tell you what would be available but would be happy to check on things for you if you need some pre-trip assistance. Our library is open late Tues, Wed and Thur (I think that's the nights) until 8 PM - closing at 5 PM other nights and also open on Sat. As the previous reply stated, we have a huge Tennessee Walking Horse Show called CELEBRATION that is the end of August - the 1st few days of Sept so if you can come after that the availability of rooms would be greater. Also, we have a very nice State Park close by if you are an RVer. Please feel free to contact me at W.R.L. Market 112 Public Square East Shelbyville, TN 37160 or by phone at 931 685-0055. Best wishes in your search, look forward to the possibility of meeting you. 3. Hi, listees, Using your information, Maxine, and your HIX obituary, Julia, I have spent some days tracking down these GAMMILL, PARKES/PARKS, and HIX lines on Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Google Books (FYI, a great genealogy research tool, if you haven't used it as a search method before) and have established: Frances Louisa (Fannie) HIX is my 3rd cousin, 3x removed, through the HIX line Benjamin Franklin (Frank) HIX is my 2nd cousin, 4x removed, through the HIX line I have entered probably more GAMMILLs and PARKES/PARKS in my family tree database than any other "allied" families, which allowed me to see where the various Bedford County GAMMILL, GAMEL, GAMBILL, and GAMBRELL lines fit together with my HIX and WORD lines, since I had only found bits and pieces before, looking for my James GAMMILL.; pretty much it seems that all go back to the James GAMMILL-Margaret MILLER or the Thomas Bradley GAMBILL-Susanna Fisher NASH lines. I couldn't find where these two lines intersected, though. Anyone know if they do? I say "allied" families, because darn if the *only *relationship that I came up with for Fannie Hix's husband, Frank Marion GAMMILL, is *husband* of 3rd cousin 3x removed!! I just can't find any unaccounted for Jameses, other than the two below. There are two possible candidates for my James GAMMILL (below), mostly because there wasn't further information on them that I could find. The others seemed to come with wives and children, already. Thoughtless of them. *James GAMMILL*, b. about 1808, s/o William GAMMILL (30 Apr 1768-12 Nov 1847) and Anne McGaughey (24 Sep 1774-29 May 1847). This family moved to Coles County, Illinois, however. I don't know if *this *James stayed in Tennessee until the 1840s when he moved to Missouri. It's not a totally far stretch to go from a birth date of "abt 1808" to 1797. This family intermarried with Balch, Parkes, Hix, et al. This one is more appealing, because this James had a brother, Andrew, who married a Jane WHITIS. The only James GAMMILL marriage record for Tennessee (Davidson County) I could find in the right time frame was to a Sallie WHITES, 22 Oct 1818, which would fit with the birth of a child to my James and Sarah in August 1819. *James H. GAMMILL*, b. 1794 Tennessee, s/o Thomas Bradley GAMBILL (1740-1806) and Susanna Fisher Nash (1751-1825). I have seen no papers with a middle initial "H," and his headstone has none, either. This family intermarried with families of Kennedy, Stewart, Word, et al. Another GAMMILL family line I looked at briefly last night is the William GAMBILL-Mary Johnson WASH line that started in Virginia with descendants moving to North Carolina. Given the above, does anyone have any information that my James GAMMILL could be the son of William and Anne? Do any of you Gammill folks in Bedford County have a family tradition of branches of your family migrated to Barry or Lawrence Counties, Missouri in the 1840s? Thanks for any help.
