hello BJ...I thought you had a book actually. AT least I know your name. There are many things about the McCuistions their connections before they left the area...evidently they were close to my people. Garrett was exector of a McCuistion will . Gloria has a book. Why dont you ask what she thinks about it. But there is no reference to their connection to Andrew Jackson.. my people had the estate papers of Claiborne McQuistion including letters which we transcribed from James and Nancy Hayes. They are WONDERFUL LETTERS and we had to really work on them as the spelling was outrageous. We included the original spelling for your entertainment and our translation for your comfort....also there was a book of Claibornes which was his personal record, and it is transcribed page by page.... further there is Tennie, Frances, James P., John C and Johns will...my ancestor was administrator for him ... samuel, also listed in the McCuistion file pages, then numerous references in smaller ways throughout...for Claiborne, Samuel, John, Anthoney, Benjamin, Frances, henry, James, Jesse, Milton...I'd have to check all the ways of spelling it too...about at least 6 different spellings. I was so happy to find some of your people to let them know about these records! but ask Gloria what she thinks of it! Hello List. This is Linda Jackson in Tullahoma, TN. In 1998 Judy Henley and I published a family collection of over 5500 papers that were in a little cupboard called a safe. Most of the bundles of papers appeared to be intact from the time that they were bundled and placed in the safe. the first Jennings Records included in the Collection were from Robert Cross Jennnings b. 1789 and were his dealings in Wilson County Tennessee.deeds ect. These papers will be of some interest to Jennings relatives in the Wilson county clans. These records are from 1812 to the late 1830's. Robert was the son of William Jenning b. 1763 in Va..and Elisabeth ? Cross Jennings) Robert moved to Bedford County with his wife Chaney Word ( b. 1789 about 1838 where he continued to keep his records to his death in 1875 and pass them to his son Samuel Thomas Jennings ( b. 1841) who married Lou Vicie Phillips. Some records for Edmond W. Jennings, b. 1818 to Robert Cross' Jennings first wife Mary Word, were also included, and some of Emmet Cross Jennings ( b. 1841), son of Robert Cross Jennings and third wife, Mariah Wheeler. Lou Vicie Phillips ( b. 1845) was the daughter of Garrett Phillips( b.1815) , who was a sherriff of Bedford County in the Civil War. Civil records of Garrett including court dockets and many cases, were in the cupboard. This means there are many records of Bedford County doings involving many citizens. Garrett Phillips' wife was Charlotte White ( b. 1816) who was the daughter of Joshua White. Originally the cupboard also contained papers of Joshua White( b.1785). Copies of his letters are in the book. Also in the cupboard, and maybe in some ways the most wonderful, were the papers of Matthew Phillips (b. 1770 in Surry County NC), one of the pioneer citizens of Bedford County. He was a justice of the peace, and had bundles of his cases, and records of citizens that came to his cotton gin hundred's listed), and that he sold liquor to from his LEGAL STILL! Also there are records of the El Bethel Baptist Church of Christ starting in the mid-1820's and then later on when it became El Bethel Baptist to the Early 1900's...bits and pieces as my ancestors were often serving in the church and conference keeping some records...both Jennings and Phillips. Samuel Thomas Jennings ( b. 1841 d.1907) added his own papers, store accounts, letters, tax records ect records to those of Robert Jennings, Joshua White, Matthew and Garrett Phillips. From there the papers were passed to his son, Robert Harrison ( RH) Jennings b. 1872- 1937 He was the last contributor to the safe. They were carefully transcribed for genealogical information with all letters and deeds being fully transcribed. There is a 29 page first name index was prepared by Judy Phillips. The book was finally printed in 1998. The papers were broad in scope and included so many Bedford county citizens from the early days of the county. Bedford County Tennessee has had 3 court house burnings so the records tend to be sketchy. The book is in the Bedford County Library but filed under the family section ( either Jennings or Phillips) so that I dont think most people find it to see if their ancestors are in it. The papers were organized into 501 files ( some were too big but that is hindsight!). They were prepared and then microfilmed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The microfilm can be viewed at the Tennessee State Library . It is on 3 reels. Mf. 1571. I think they can be purchased but the TSLA has had a copy of the book and is in the process of purchasing a second book so that they can then loan one out on Interlibrary loan, or I think the book then can be used to reference the film. There will be some lapse time while they hardbind it, ect. IT is in about 16 other libraries. I can post this to the list if someone wants that information. I really just wanted to let you know it will soon be available for InterLibrary loan! I have an email in to the cataloger to see how long it will take before it is ready to be loaned out. thanks, Linda Jackson (I only have 5 left to sell afterwhich I can reprint if there is a call for it.)

Hi Kathryn, Could you look up the Hastings in Bedford. I lost a lot of my sources when my computer went down and am trying to restore them. Some were in Bedford. Thanks for volunteering! Kathy Hastings
Hi Imogene, A few people have thankfully contributed deeds on the following site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/bedford.htm but there is not a complete listing anywhere on the web that I am aware of. I have the deed book by the Marsh's. I will do a look up if you are interested. Latest News----- The final story list has been posted by Lila Coley on the website she created for the book. Almost all the stories have been sent to the publisher. About half of them have been typeset and returned for proofing. http://www.geocities.com/bedfordcounty/stories.html We have received 844 stories and more than 900 photographs. Many families will find lost kin from stories submitted from more than 30 states. Please order your book now while the pre-publication price is still in effect. (Ordering information also on Lila's website, above). If you have ordered one book, please consider that you may want additional books when you see this beautiful dark blue book with gold-leaf lettering, produced on high quality, enduring paper. The number of pages will be nearly twice as many as originally expected; the price will almost certainly increase in the immediate future. You can also help the Bedford County Historical Society by placing your order now. Book orders pay for more pages in the book, which are needed because of the great quantity of interesting material received for the book. Carolyn

Willam Carter Alvis/Alves is my g.g.g.grandfather, I have accurate documentation and sources for him and his descendants except for proof of his birth his parents and a marriage date. I can not find the information I need. I have read other researchers information on him but haven't seen any proof or sources for that information and some of the information is contradictory. So I am at a loss as to what info to follow. This is the only documetation I have found for William Carter Alvis/Alves in Tenn.: Marshall County Court minutes-Volume A. 1836-1840 (NOTE: found in a small book unindexed, not bound, not marked,as to name, Vol, or contents.)Wm. Over the past few days I have answered many inquiries from list members about folks on the 1814 Tax list. One thing I noticed as I have done this is that the list appears to cover only the eastern half of Bedford County. Some of my own families (Fisher, Thompson, Earnhart) that I know were in the western half of the county by 1814 are not on the list and the watercourses in the western part of the county are not listed. A number of town lots in Shelbyville are listed and the list includes at least some of the area south of Duck river in the eastern half of the county as it includes entries on Thompson's Creek, Shipman's Creek, and Little Flat Creek. The list includes 310,520 acres of land, 999 dwelling houses, with a total valuation of land and houses of $1,010,248.78 2/3. 625 slaves are listed with a total value of $467,268. List members may be interested in the data extracted thus far, so a consolidated list follows. The are notes of the form "No xxx." meaning that there are no individuals on the list with that surname of a similar surname.
