    1. [TNBEDFOR] John McKisick/McKissick
    2. Brownie MacKie
    3. Am looking for any information on a John McKisick, son of Daniel and Jane Wilson McKisick and brother to James McKisick. John died abt. April 1818, probably six miles south of Shelbyville, Bedford County, on his father's farm I believe he was about 33 yrs. old. He was my ggg grandfather. I've been trying to find an 1810 census to see if he was in that. His father, Daniel McKisick, also died in 1818, and the family then moved to Benton County, AR. John was a cattle buyer for the family. This McKisick family was strongly associated with Rice F. and Sarah Ross and the McMichaels of Coffee County, TN as well as the John/William Patton family of Davidson and Bedford Counties. I will be happy to pay someone to look for records on John. Sincerely, B. MacKie --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Lila, what a wonderful story. I am so glad that you shared it. The Mississippi River can be frightening. Once, my husband and children were traveling from WY to TN and when we got to Cairo where the rivers merge, we waited in line to board the ferry with our family. Our oldest was six years old and when he realized what we were about to do, he said," Lets go back." Imagine how that looked to those families when they crossed those broad rivers. Our trip took place 41 years ago. Traveling through AR would not have been easy! My daddy used to tell me about the steamboat lined up at Nashville. He was b. in 1901. From there they hired a team and wagon to take them to Little Rock where the father "bought wagons and teams and they traveled by land over the piney mountains to Benton County and stayed one week and then went to Polk County Missouri." The letter does not say how they got from Bedford County to Nashville. It simply says, "as you know we sailed from Nashville". I had thought the everyone went west by wagon train. What a surprise to learn some went by riverboat. Regards, Lila Coley coley@flash.net

    2. Sue, Mulberry Creek stretches up into the south part of Bedford County and is as you say at least navicable in small crafts. If one goes much farther north he or she will find themselfs in the Duck River watershed and then boat travel is all west. Wayne Austin

    2. Sorry, I hit the wrong button; I just want to say that The Drake family story states that the Drakes (who had once resided in Bedford Co then came to Jackson co. Al.(about 1832) "came by flat boat" down the Paint Rock River and then into the Tenn. River to somewhere around Ditto`s landing (or another landing west of Ditto`s) which would have been closer to their destination; then overland to Vinemont, Blount Co. Al. (now Cullman Co.) about 1848) I don`t know if they left the Shelbyville area by boat or not. At certain times of the year these small rivers are probably navigable in or on a small craft. would like to hear some more ideas on travel from that area also. sue in Al.

    3. Hi Gloria, Not sure about riverboats, perhaps someone else on the list could help. I know there was a big port at Memphis, perhaps they could have traveled there first? There is a really big book in the Shelbyville Library on the MOSELEY family. I wonder if there could be additional information in there? I am remotely connected to them. My great uncle Robert Lewis Couch married Annie Lucy Moseley, daughter of Drucilla Clinton Johnson and Thomas Green Moseley. Where did your Moseley's go in Texas? Thomas and Drucilla stayed in Bedford County, but Robert and Annie lived in Dallas for many years. I wondered if your John Green Moseley lived nearby? Kathryn <snip> john green moseley and wife martha c. oneal and 3 children and one mammy left shelbyville and went to texas <snip> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [TNBEDFOR] questions:if someone left shelbyville tn aft the civil war....
    2. In my family history it states that john green moseley and wife martha c. oneal and 3 children and one mammy left shelbyville and went to texas after the civil war. they possibly stopped in marshall county to say bye to marthas parents. They went by wagon, carrying only what the wagon could carry. when they got to the mississippi they went on a steamboat down the river . at the Miss. they took apart the wagon and left the wooden parts behind and crated up the metal parts. when they got off the boat they had to stay put til they found the wood parts to rebuild the wagon. these are my questions: where would they likely have gotten the boat at from shelbyville? from Marshall county? where was the likeliest jump off spot? are there any steamboat passenger records for the Mississippi riverboats? are there any on line? thank you for any pointers you may have. gloria ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
