    3. To the Jordan researcher. I have a great aunt who married a Jordan. Don't know his name, but hers was "Willie". I think they eventually moved to Nashville. "Willie" is apparently (according to census, short for William in this case. Do you know of any of your Jordan men who married a lady named "Willie"? -----Original Message----- From: Sandra Lee [mailto:ihunt4kin@hotmail.com] Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2002 5:00 PM To: TNBEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] searching for smith's from bedford co I'm interested in your SMITH family. 3. My Mom passed away at age 90 about a year ago and she had two uncles that were Smiths. I think at least one of them lived in or near Tullahoma, Tn and I think is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Tullahoma. Also I think that cemetery is listed on the Coffee County page. The other one I think lived in Moore County. I have heard my Mother mention a Calvin who was a cousin to her but after Mother died and this was her side of the family I sort of lost interest in genealogy but am beginning to find bits and pieces such as this that has again got me interested. I am sure one of her uncles was a John Matthew Smith known by her as Uncle Matt. Will have to dig out those records and see just what I am talking about. Thank you. Richardson, John, in Richmond, has been sentenced to death for stealing, forging and passing counterfeit notes; will hang May 9. (Nashville Dispatch, 26 April 1862) There were lots of men named John Richardson, but I have one I can't locate after the 1860 Cherokee Co., Ala census. My John Richardson's wife and children were in Hamilton Co., TN in 1880 census. Does anyone have an idea on how I should go about finding out more information about this death sentence? 3. I went through my collection of papers about my TN families last night. In the mid 1980's my mother and I were at the Fort Worth Library and had copies made of 8 pages in a book she found. I hadn't read these pages in a decade plus. It has at the top 1854 Bedford CO. and then dates and what happened in a court. I found names I did not know were my kin until the past 4 years and alot of other names. I want to go back to find the book, does anyone have any ideal what book my mother had the copies made from? If I can locate that book a and study it's contents I will share with yawl. I am thinking I may want to buy a copy. AM

    3. A tool that I use a lot in my research is the free maps you can access over the WWW from Topozone: http://www.topozone.com/ Let me walk you through how you can find the creeks you mention using these tools. Topozone support queries on the names of major places, but not on the names of features such as streams. Fortunately, there is another system called the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) query system: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form In this case, GNIS did not have "Falling Creek" but it did have "North Fork" (I searched for a feature of type stream in Bedford County, TN named "North Fork"): North Fork Creek 353459N 0863833W Farmington topo quad I took the location data (which I knew from past experience was in degrees, minutes and seconds -- and I also remembered that longitude is actually negative in the US (GNIS "overlooks" this important fact), and asked Topozone to give me a map ( under "Get a map" in the left frame) given a location in "Deg/min/sec" ). I filled in this data: Latitude: 35 degrees, 34 minutes, 59 seconds Longitude: -86 degrees, 38 minutes, 33 seconds and got a map centered on North Fork with this URL: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=35.58305555555556&lon=-86.64250000000001 Not seeing a "Falling Creek" on this map, I expanded it to a "Large" map: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=16&n=3937569&e=532390&size=l On the large map you see "Fall Creek" just to the E of "North Fork Creek". So I assume this is the location and the modern name for Falling Creek is Fall Creek. Note that you can follow some links in GNIS and get to a map on Terraserver of the same area: http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=14&T=2&lat=35.5831&lon=-8 6.6425 but these Terraserver maps are much less flexible and harder to use that the Topozone maps. Topozone lets you choose both the size and scale of the map that you get.

    2. Pam, Before 1836 Bedford County and Mary county shared a common border. In 1836 about equal slices were taken from Bedford and Maury to form Marshall (plus some from Lincoln and eventually some from Giles). I don't think any part of Bedford was ever Maury or any part of Maury was ever Bedford. IF it was, it had to be before 1836. There is not any research center other than the State Archives. There are individuals who do research. Carolyn In a message dated 5/3/02 8:53:51 AM, BEAR4709@aol.com writes: << Carolyn, I'm ready to tackle my Tennessee Research again. I've gotten discouraged many times due to most of the records being burned across the state. But I'm ready to go again :) My ancestors were in Maury County area prior to 1836 and then I beleave Maury County turned into Marshall County and then into Bedford County as well! ugh...so confusing..... Do these three counties (or one) have a center where research is done and sold to you? Like a library or historical center? If so, would you share the info? Thanks Carolyn! Pam Tillman-Goff
