    3. Jan, I believe my Minor WILKES (b. Bet. 1794 - 1804, d. 1849) was married to a Susannah HARRIS (b. abt. 1800, d. after 1850) in Bedford Co. In a deed of gift, dated 3 Feb 1844, a Newton C. HARRIS deed personal property to the children (his nieces and nephews) of Minor and Susannah. I've also found that in 1841 Mosby HARRIS gave 100 acres to Newton C. HARRIS with the provision Newton C. was to care for Mosby the rest of his life. I'm guessing that Susannah and Newton were brothers and that Mosby, who was on the 1814 Bedford Co. tax list (100 acres on Wartrace Fork), was the father of Susannah and Newton. Does this tie into your Harris line in any way? Would certainly like to be able to confirm my guesses. Would appreciate any information you might be able to give me. Sincerely, Chris in Illinois Researching: Waltrip in VA, KY and IL; Dean, Key, and Owens in KY; and Wilkes, Norman in TN. chrisw@spectrumdata.com -------Original Message------- From: TNBEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, May 06, 2002 11:36:21 AM To: TNBEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNBEDFOR] Sanders/Harris Is anyone working on the Harris and Sanders lines in Bedford County, TN? 2. My great-grandmother was Martha Morton Shaddy and her sister was Letsy Morton Williams Robinson --Sometime between the 1850 census and the 1860 census she married Unknown William. In the 1860 census she was living home with her parents Joseph Morton and wife Anna Yates Morton and her two children were listed as --S. J. Williams age 3 female and M. D,Williams age 1 male they were later named in the will of her second husband --Henry T. robinson --as Sara Jane Williams and William D. Williams --- I have never been able to find a mariage record and I am sure it was part of the lost records. Does this fit with any of your Williams --the Joseph Morton home was on what is now called Robinson Rd just before you go up the Chestnut Ridge hill going south on 231-- Frances Roberts

Although this happened much later (1911) than yours, I found some help by contacting the newspaper in Shelbyville. I don't know if it is the same paper as the one in 1862, but they might have the old records or copies of issues (if they were publishing during the War of Northern Aggression):) I contacted them at: news@t-g.com This is the link to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette News Departament. 1. Re: [TNBEDFOR] searching for smith's from bedford co
    2. Unfortunately most of what I info I have on the Smith's from Bedford County is what I mentioned earlier. It is thought that Malcolm D Smith married Margaret Fisher July 5, 1866. Not sure if this is mine but dates and all match. My Joseph Yarbrough Smith married Malvina A Russell Feb 8, 1870. They are shown on the 1870 Bedford County Census as 38/38 J Y Smith 30 born TN Malvina 19 born Tn Martha 65 born Tn 39/39 Martha Smith 39 born TN John 18 Permelia 17 G W 16m W J 13f M E 12f Polly T 11 W C 8m (think this is William Calvin; age fits other info) 40/40 Malcolm Smith 34 born TN Margaret 41 born TN M J 3f M E 1f Family story has that Malvina died in childbirth and Joseph moved to Arkansas with other family members where he married Mary Raines from McNairy County, TN. Have not found their marriage record yet. I know from other info from a Smith researcher that William Calvin was in in Arkansas but that is the only one I have found for sure from this family line. According to 1880 census, Harbert Smith and Nancy A had following children mentioned; Eddy ca 1866 May L ca 1869 James H ca 1872 Cassie A ca 1874 Hider (?) ca 1876 Minnie F ca 1878 Agood (?) Nov 1880 Malcolm D Smith and Margaret list on the 1880 census the following Nancy c1864 Permelia c1869 William c 1872 Martha c 1874 I need to look at this again as this is second hand info. My grandfather was born in Bono, Arkansas Dec 17, 1882 to Joseph Y and Mary Smith. Mary died c 1885 and Joseph c 1890. My grandfather had no real memories of his parents. Once he moved back to Tennessee while working with the Dupont Co. I am not sure if he knew that he had relatives so close by as there was noone to tell him of family that I know of. My mother said he never mentioned anyone but his brother and sister and a cousin in Arkansas that they stayed with after their parents died. I did find an article that mentions the area of Bedford County where Crowell Chapel is located. It calls it" Thompson's Ford in 1806 but in 1824 it took the name Crowell Mill. Around 1874 it was named Hall's Mill. This is located on the Duck River in the northwestern part od Bedford County on the 11th and 18th Civil District line. Among early settlers in the area were George W Smith and his wife Phebe, the latter dying April 3, 1830 with burial in the old part of Crowell's Chapel Cemetery."(Settlement at Thompsons Ford, Hall's Mill, TN by Jerry Wayne Cook) Another article mentions a "William Smith , a land locator and surveyor, forded the Duck River at Thompson's Ford(now Hall's Mill) in August 1783 with Ambrose Mauldin, Juluis Saunders, Alexander Greer, and Mathew Talbot on their way back to French Lick at Nashville." (Some early settlers of the 18th civil district by Jerry Wayne Cook) Have not connected these names to mine but feel there has to be a connection somewhere! Surely between all of us working on these lines from this area, we can link these families together! Let me know if any of this makes sense to you or you recognize any names. Thanks so much for your help!
